The idea is that Mary Brown tells the trio about her "encounter" with the witch to encourage the trio to seek out the witch, whether they believe it or not the trio being the morons that they are, have the encouragement needed to seek her out. That's the interpretation of Mary Brown being the witch

>>220221729
The way they shot Scream 4 really didn't age well. The debate on whether it's just a filter or how it was filmed will forever wage on.
>>
>>220221820
It is a filter, it's not there on the deleted scenes.
But it still looks infinitely better than 5, which looks like it was shot with an indie budget because corona rules not only made the movie feel like an empty parking lot, but also made all the art direction worse.
>>
>>220221820
And here I thought it was just the shitty x264 bluray rip I downloaded.

>>
Putting on Occult (2009)
>>
>>220221987
I'd recommend the fanedit someone did that added back in the deleted scenes if you can get your hands on it. Gives a few of the characters like Jill's boyfriend more motivation.
>>
>>220221295
what the fuck was this guy's problem
>>
>>220222192
I'd second this.
A lot of the shit they cut is kind of needed, the super hot friend who has no real personality and dies during the "I didn't say I was in your closet" scene was intended to be some kind of surrogate for a modern audience where she's super cynical and doesn't give a shit about the pathos of what Jill is going through or the lore that Kirby is into, she's like a expy of a Saw fan basically, which results her having the most gory death of the whole franchise, and that is totally lost in the final cut of the movie where she just ends up being just the first friend who dies

compare that to a shot from the final movie, it's grim tv show lighting that they then added a bloom filter over everything

There's no real information about any of it, but to me it seems like they were going for an intentional dark teen drama aesthetic originally, like a Pretty Little Liars type of thing, similar to how the first movie is kind of shot like a Dawson's Creek type of show, but I can only presume the Weinsteins instigated the filter that made it look like fucking JJ Abrams Star Trek, unless Craven lost his mind and did it himself, but he did not address it during the commentary

Well they should, they spend so much time setting up this demon but no religious subtwxt or themes just mindless violence and shock value. If the writer thinks they're clever they'll have the random magical minorty character ala The Shinning(no idea why this trope is so popular).

At least Asian Horror cinema seems to tackle this subject well.

Any 'curse' story that is inconsistent with the rules of the curse is automatically garbage. The idea that the curse being transferred retroactively kills a bunch of people is retarded and the idea that the groom's father survived while his mother didn't is also fucking stupid. I'm also pretty sure that both of the fags died which suggests that the idea that it would only affect the groom's 'bloodline' is wrong. The protag being brought back from the dead is stupid as well and reeks of 'our test audiences didn't like the protagonist dying so we had to come up with something else'
The anti-marriage, anti-family, empowered feminist garbage is actually the least of my criticisms.

We lost something when these kind of sets with painted backgrounds became CGI landscapes. It's not even that CGI isn't as realistic which is normally the problem. It's the opposite, there's a surreal nature to sets like this. They're real in the physical sense in that you can imagine reaching out and touching the rocks, but fantastic in the way that walking into the distance would seem somewhat magical.

How? I know what jobs are like. I know what it is like to have a job and what it is like to be retired. I know what it is like to work 5 days a week 40 hours a week. It is terrible. I know what type of people go into what type of work. I know modern jobs are absolutely terrible. Only 10% of people in the west are doing well. The bottom 90% keep doing worse. Top 10% means those with 1m or $251k income.
> Pretty sure a shmuck with a low-tier job done competently could kill a murderer or movie monster. But that's not what you're mad about, is it?
I am not mad. I am saying cops are people who are on shift and nothing more. I don’t think you know how shitty it feels to have a cop uniform on.

Pretty much all death/elimination game stuff is the same. You just tweak the setting, rules, etc. to make it fresh. Jinrou Game uses the Werewolf Game rules, which there's an entire franchise called The Werewolf Game you can watch. They add in a lot more character titles than Night Has Come, and it can be a little overwhelming at first.

Finished Alien Cubed (Assembly).
I think this is a cool film if you think about it as a comic book "What If" style alternate story in the Alien Universe. As a sequel to Aliens though killing off Newt & Hicks immediately corners the film into being a grim slog that needs a massive emotional weight to carry it, and it never really summons it.
Also it goes from xeno-mania in Aliens to just one xeno again which again feels like pumping on the breaks. I read that there was a script that ends with teasing going to the alien home planet to kill em all and I think that would have been a better path of escalation.
Your thoughts on Alium3?

Quick rundown from what I watched:

>They Will Kill You
100% style over substance. This is a movie you watch once and then only ever watch again with glances while it plays in the background.
>True Fear
4/10 FF movie made by Swedes. I thought Swedish people were blonde hair & blue eyes, but nobody in this movie is like that. It was all just a bit boring honestly.
>Popeye's Returns
Frontrunner for the worst horror of 2026. The acting is better than the first, but this has no nudity and the kills are actually worse. A lot is nonsensical like them skipping 5 years, making it 2029 while the computers are literally Commodore 4032's from the late 1970s. Yes, they still have modern smartphones. This entire movie is simply made to bridge the gap and setup Bluto when he hits PD next year. How do I know? The government research project that basically created Popeye is called BLUTO. So yeah, they aren't even trying to hide it.

>>
>>220231774
There's never really a time when you think she or the sister might die, that's the problem. It's a very thin plot with no stakes. It basically being a different version of Ready Or Not doesn't help either. There's also another similar movie, but I forgot the name of it. Something about vampires or some shit in a giant mansion.

Anyone seen this? Thoughts?

I'm a big fan of the director's other film, Inside. Also, I saw the remake of Livid (Abigail) and thought it blew ass.
>>
>>220232944
Abigail is nothing like Livid, the vampire ballerina girl in Livid barely does anything
Abigail is also a lot more fun and fast paced
Livid is a visually striking movie but as incoherent as most italian horror, nothing in the movie makes sense, especially the old woman character

Not sure how to feel about Occult overall. The mundanity of its subject matter combined with its oppressive sound design suggesting that it was leading to something horrible created one hell of an atmosphere. It was engaging and enjoyable throughout for that. There was a stark shift in motivation and attitude for one of the main characters in the third act which I think needed a bit more context to be believable. Then of course the ending was controversial. Even though it was explicitly led up to, it felt like it came out of left field. The final few seconds of the movie looked like something I would have watched on Newgrounds in 2003. It wasn't entirely out of place due to the lo-fi special effects throughout the movie, but I walked away from it feeling like I'd been trolled. Upon reflection, I think it worked, but I just don't quite know how to process it. It seems like maybe that's about what Shiraishi was going for.

I watched Noroi once some years back, and I recall enjoying it a lot. I think I'm due for a rewatch and to see some of his other films.

I'm seeing Hokum tomorrow because I really loved Oddity. This will be the first time I've been in a movie theater since the first Joker came out.
>>
>>220233701
>I really loved Oddity
I don't get it.
The woodman thing is obviously the main appeal but it barely does anything and when it finally does it's at the last 5m of the movie and kills are mostly offscreen.
The intro with the crazed psycho was far scarier and tense than anything related to the woodman

I just watched "Ghost in the Machine" (1993) and boy, did that not age well. I'd say it's a candidate for "Best of the Worst", but I think it's even to bad for that.
Remember "Shocker"? Well, it's kind of like that, but the killer dies in an MRI machine that is struck by lightning, so his soul is transferred into the computer. He can then travel through data cables, power cables, phone lines and cell phone networks and murder people.
How do they defeat him in the end? Well, a fridge magnet erases a floppy disk, so the big magnets of a particle accelerator ought to erase the soul of the killer. The killer physically manifests itself in form of bytes coming out of a computer in the control room of the accelerator. But the control room is shielded from the strong magnetic fields of the accelerator by glass windows. Mom shoots the glass windows, and the magnetic field comes inside the control room and sucks the bytes of the killer's soul out into the particle accelerator. The end. I wish I was making that up, but it's really that bad.

That's bad. My uncle was an alcoholic. Was in and out of psych wards. Had his girlfriend die on him by cardiac arrest when both were passed out drunk on a very hot summer's day. Fought the addiction for a little over 10 years. He's now been dry for over a decade but is left with a huge debt from all the damage he did on his bad days. Still goes to AA meetings. Knowing how long he fought his demons I admire him for finally having overcome them.

Alcohol is a serious drug. I knew three people who have died from alcoholism.

As an alcoholic myself, I'll tell you. It's misery feeding misery for short term pleasure. You have someone that is already miserable in life (hates their job, hates their living conditions, hates their family, partner, etc etc) and finds the only solace they can get in the short term drunken effect from alcohol. Unbeknownst to them though (when it starts becoming a daily vice) that the misery is increasing exponentially in the long term.
It's pretty fucking bad.
