Just finished. Liked Cloud better. This reminded me of Curry Barker's The Chair, where it's like an extended sketch that he put a bunch of random ideas he had into. It could be interpreted about being about intrusive thoughts or moments of destructive clarity. Kurosawa's great skill is creating an effective sense of mystery or dread. Like how short it is, doesn't give it the opportunity to become irritating.

Just finished. Silent Black Cat-ish story of a 19th century French guy in deep debt who murders a wandering Jewish merchant for his money but is then tormented by his own guilt in the form of visions of the Jew's ghost and the sound of the Jew's sleigh bells. Watched because it's one of a handful of movies listed on letterboxd as Horror from the 1920s on Tubi that I hadn't seen yet, though calling it horror is a stretch. The MC is harried by a ghost, but it's only in his imagination, and he's eventually found out by a hypnotist but even that is just a dream sequence. There's not much here besides comfy lederhosen vibes, but there's an unexpected and prominent appearance by Boris Karloff, five years before Frankenstein.

What a fucking waste of time. First half was pretty good, but after the cops die there is no plot whatsover, people just get jumped on by the ghosts. To top it of, the movie ends with no closure. Is the sequel better?
