Backwoods/Cannibal and American Gothic spooks. TCSM and the first Wrong Turn both have the most horrifying horror movie premises in my opinion, also stuff like Bone Tomahawk, and just in general the myth of the Wendigo are equally up there.

In the Mouth of Madness

Didn't quite stick the landing in my opinion and was surprisingly bogged down by practical effects in Hobb's End. Rare instance where subtle modern CGI would be preferable even though the movie looks great overall, especially the lighting. Still awesome, Sam Neill killed it. 4/5, was hoping to give it a 4.5/5 before the last twenty minutes. It just needed to keep up the pace, there was an unnecessary lull in tension once he was dropped back into the world.
>>
>>223665238

VHS thoughts.
>GWAR
Seened like they paid GWAR $10 for this. Only good part was when the mom shot herself in the head.
>Dance, Dance, Dance, Dance
Babs getting her arm fucked up was entertaining, as was the final puppet part. Otherwise meh.
>Heartbeat
Decent setup, went nowhere.
>The Music of Mr. Sze
"Music of Erich Zahn" adaption. I never liked the original, and this sucked. VHS always sucks at Lovecraft shit.
>Death Tone
Occasional sparks where it was creepy despite making no sense. But they kept putting normal music over the top of it that cheapened the few moments where the torture music was creepy.

The Repugnant music video was the only good part, because it was indistinguishable from a normal death metal video.

Nothing is worse than 94. Not for a lack of trying from successive attempts, but the twist in 94's is so stupid and unnecessary. I think GWAR would have worked better if the segments were actually horrific, thus providing an interlude to cut the tension.

of all the vhs segments, i think people sleep on second honeymoon from the first movie. the tone is creepy throughout, but the idea of your cheating gf's dyke lover stabbing your throat while you sleep is truly horrifying. back when this series tried to be truly horrifying and not schlock.
>>
>>223667032
I don't think there's one magic formula to making a good horror flick. Plenty of ways how to make a bad one, A24 is pioneering in that respect. But movies like Halloween (1978) and Zombi 2 couldn't be further apart in appeal, yet both are considered classics in the genre.
>>
>>223670005
you're an idiot, but she looks fucking perfect, I'm calling it as the best she's looked in anything. I'm not a Chastain fan, I haven't read the book, closest prejudice I have in the movie's favor is I loved Annie Hardy in Dashcam, lol, but everything about this movie worked for me and I loved it.
