It doesn't want to be an action game. At least until Artorias, which set the blueprint for their boss design in later games. I replay Dark Souls 1 every year and despite its rough spots i'm still in awe of how defining it is.

It's not a flat open world where you can just run from A to B, there are real consequences for planning poorly and rewards for planning well.
