The lack of high resolution of the 5th and 6th gen gave those games an air of mystery and exploration, as they were filled to the brim with easter eggs, references, and other obscure and esoteric imagery added for fun that you couldn't immediately discern and identify. Small secrets designed to invoke curiosity and certain moods and thoughts.Players perceived the game worlds as a whole, through in-game cinematography and environmental storytelling rather than focusing on individual elements. All this gave way to urban legends, myths, and speculations. Those were the fun days.Modern games, on the other hand, are plastered with text and imagery on every surface that you're supposed to look at. That’s the new way of feeding your information. You don’t have to look at the larger picture anymore, just closely following the obvious is enough. By flaunting its high resolution games lost that sense of mystique. There are no more urban legends. Nobody is talking or speculating about games beyond the initial market hype. There is no more place for someone to go “is that…”Sometimes less is more.

Its obvious they should have scrapped the entire engine and used a third party one better suited for open world. but i guess the part of its charm is that its a jap developer that literally doesnt give a fuck. Its a game forced into existence by sheer willpower and endless programming grind.

>Wind Waker and Metal Gear Solid 2 got a lot of criticism when they came out, they sold like absolute shit, and yet they were good games. Why do some people act like they're deep-throating these two titles? They're not bad games, but commercially they were a total disaster.Wind Waker launched in an era when 3D realism was what everyone was buying, and fans were dying for a proper sequel to Ocarina of Time or Majora's Mask.Metal Gear Solid 2 had what was probably the most dishonest marketing in gaming history.>B-but meta-narratively speaking...Bro, the ads straight-up sold you a sequel starring Solid Snake. What the fuck did they expect the average player to feel when, ten minutes in, the game basically flips you off and says: FUCK YOU, now your protagonist is Raiden.>People just didn't appreciate them at the time! That's a lie. The people who actually finished the games gave them the credit they deserved back then. The issue with both titles was always, ALWAYS the marketing. Nothing else. They bombed because they sold something the audience at the time simply didn't want. There's no big mystery here.Comment too long. Click here to view the full text.
>>736234427Accurate. The gritty Tom Clancy feel of MGS1 made it the normie adult male videogame of its generation, the Call of Duty before Modern Warfare took over the world. A lot of people hated Raiden and absolutely didn’t get the story when it was new but it was still popular and people generally liked it.As far as 3D Zeldas go, Wind Waker was correctly identified as having a bad art style and being a bad game. The one that actually unfairly got the shaft was Majora and I’m glad it’s more well loved today. Everything 3D Zelda between Majora and BOTW is varying degrees of bad.
>>736234275>they sold like absolute shitWW is the 4th best selling GameCube game and MGS2 is the 8th best selling PS2 game.
>>736234275
i wish AAA developers just made games look like this again. Then we can have great games pumping out constantly. but then again... we cant because every person in these studios is some sort of fat nigger and nobody normal is working in them
>>736234275Both games are fine, but have issues. WW is blatantly unfinished. MGS2 was when the series inexplicably went from Tom Clancy-esque military futurism to capeshit. It also spent way too much time in the codec, it’s almost an audio drama.

>>736238525It's just the logical conclusion of being able to patch games, early access models, and games making more revenue from selling skins and DLC than actual copies of the game. They have no reason to care about making a good game beyond having a marketplace to peddle microtransactions. Bethesda has been all-in on this model since at least Fallout 76 and TES, but honestly they have always pioneered the shitty DLC model since horse armor.

>>736227796There are some good changes. Late game psykers no longer have 50 chance of making your max bravery team kill each other from the other side of the map, every 2 turns(they can still do it if they have line of sight, but there is way more counterplay now), and training centers reduce the tedium of replacing casualties. There is also way less potential for cheap OHKO deaths after the first couple of months, which encourages bold play like breaching, supression, playing around reaction fire ect. instead of moving at a snail's pace, hiding behind corners, and taking potshots all day long.
>>736230024Phoenix Point. It's more about the geoscape though. If you concentrate all your forces, tactical missions will be easy, but you have to split them up to cover the entire world and get resources and XP to outpace the constantly evolving Crabmen.

I actually started replaying WC3 a couple days ago since it's been almost 20 years since I did the campaigns. How hard is Hard? I don't remember if the game has a difficulty curve across Normal or not, but the only challenge I had doing the human campaign was attempting to destroy the scourge bases on the mission where you wait for Uther, only to promptly get my shit kicked in. I know it's something pros can do (along with shit like killing Archimonde), but I'm wondering if Hard is a decent challenge or just the AI straight up fucking cheating.
