They did their best with the exploration but they made certain concessions with map design to make it into eyecandy which is cancer for exploration. Large empty plateaus that you still have to walk across to find stuff because of how they're at an angle and you can't see across them.

I think that Dark Souls 1 had the best world design. Opening shortcuts and allowing many areas to connect to Firelink Shrine really added to the immersion.I was very disappointed in Dark Souls 3 when I was forced to teleport to High Walls of Lothric.

As in, each teleport point is its own little DS1 world. It would also be good if you can't just teleport to ANY bonfire, just certain big ones much like how the lordvessel worked. I think it'd be a good middleground between the issues that DS1 had. According to them it limited their creativity a bit, since the zones had to fit into the whole, and it was hard to connect certain others, like the duke's archives and crystal caves. But mostly for bosses the 2h spin is the way to go.
