I'm planning out a game that has both stealth and action, with the stealth part coming first. It took me a minute to figure out how to visually get across the idea of stealth using limitations similar to what could be done on an NES. I hope the diagram on the right makes sense.

Using palette cycling, the tiles could light up if a light source moves across them, like if an enemy is patrolling with a flashlight. Even if the light passes by your character, you can remain hidden in objects like barrels or other objects layered in front of the player like a bush. Certain tiles and objects could undergo palette cycling to further sell the illusion of a light source. Thoughts?

Put in auto crouching when you slide into the wall, and standing up when you aim over the wall. Have to remake part of the camera system as theres starting to be conflicts between certain actions. Also started adding in a little cheat menu to give myself whatever I want or need to do. Will no doubt get much longer as developing goes on.

It's really hard to fuck up capsule art so much that it affects your game in any way.
Whoever made graphics for your game should make the capsule art. It shouldn't be an expense of more than a day of work.

I got Unity and I'm ready to go when I feel like I got enough to work wth, which shouldn't take long because these graphics are a cinch to make.

>Whoever made graphics for your game should make the capsule art
most games here have garbage developer art which is absolutely bad enough that people will ignore your capsule

They will still ignore your game when they see it, so amazing capsule art won't affect your game in any way. Unless you get duped into paying a significant chunk on your budget on it, in which case it will affect your game negatively.

I don't think I've ever decided to click on a game based on capsule art. Maybe the title which is sometimes in the capsule art, but what I almost always do is mouseover every capsule art in whatever list I'm browsing to see the name, genre and the thumbnails before I decide whether to visit the game's page. In fact I'd say the capsule art is the one thing I don't pay attention to because it's pretty small and half the time I don't know what's on it anyway.
I should admit that I'm a thirdie and that I only buy the games on specials so picrel is what I see of the capsule art (very little recognizable) and I check every one of them my mouseover as on picrel.

The difference is how quickly and easily you can see what the game is about without even clicking on Steam.
And when I was buying games in boxes, never not once did I buy a game without reading a review of it first (in a paper game magazine) so I didn't care what the box art was even then.
Except for picrel, I grabbed that thing and didn't let go until I got home.

on the contrary, I tend to wishlist things and mostly buy things on sale from my wishlist unless I really want it.
often, I put off buying a game for a long time and then it just becomes a never-ever sale.

the capsule art is the main selling point in that case, it's what I see every time I open my wishlist and think "what game was this again?" and the games that have very indistinctive capsule arts are among the never-evers.
I've bought games from the wishlist with bad capsule art but at least those ones were unique and I could say 'oh, it's that game'.

>>488515019
>it's low effort shit
it's very distinctive, it shows the name of the game, it shows the artstyle. that's all you need. I wouldn't recommend a simple title like that if your game isn't minimalistic as well.

what, you instantly remember what each game is about because it has good capsule art?
can you tell what these games are at a glance, or do you have to start reading the tags? If it's a game I added to the wishlist 1+ years ago, I could easily have forgotten and I'd have to check the store page, assuming I can be bothered. I added thronefall recently enough that I remember what it is and might consider buying it if I feel like I'm done with the games I'm currently playing.

I instantly remember what each game is about from art + title because I've checked it before and don't have the memory of a 80 years old alzheimer's patient.
I INSTANTLY remember what Thronefall is about too, a sort of top-down 3D strategy take on Kingdom Two Crowns. No idea what the rest of yours are about because I've never checked them before, but this was about one's own wishlists not others.
I dunno, the oldest wishlist I've added was in 2021 and I still clearly remember the screenshots and gameplay. I'll let you know in 10 years if anything changes, but as it stands I think you need to take some Vitamin B and Omega 3 supplements to help your memory issues.

I'm glad to see another anon implementing cvars.
I have a cvar class with some metadata (cvar flags etc.), which also caches float and int versions of cvars when they're changed.
Game code can get a reference to a cvar object directly instead of performing a hash map lookup every time a value needs to be checked.
But I just did it that way because I felt like it, and because idtech3 used a similar system.

Okay, let's make the crazy assumption then that when you see any game, regardless of its capsule art, you instantly remember exactly why you wishlisted the game, you instantly remember what stood out about it and made you think "I want to buy this" and that you can remember that much information indefinitely because you're apparently a superhuman being. Good for you and your superpowers I guess.

Let's say you're going to buy some ketchup, and each ketchup section has the brand logo above it that's very clearly associated with the ketchup they're selling. If you look closely at the bottles you can clearly see what it is, but they have stands or something or boxes they're in. That's the equivalent of capsule art, it's the first thing that stands out at you and makes you think "this is the thing".

Thronefall's capsule art looks nothing like the game. It's distinctive which is cool but when I look at it it's just that. It's an unlabelled cardboard ketchup box containing thronefall-branded ketchup. It already looks cheap compared to its neighbours.
>>

>If one had business sense, they wouldn't be making games in the first place.
Making games isn't the most lucrative path, for sure, but business sense still goes a long way. The biggest problem for most is that business sense usually doesn't align with their personal goals. It might make sense for a starting studio to do work-for-hire, for instance, at the expense of you not making your own game and not having much input into the actual game part. Is that worth it?
>>
>>488525426

The answer is yes, it could be done in UnrealEngine and Unity and other 3D engines. But actually the answer is no, because while you might be able to create something that looks and plays the same, there is so much more going on under the hood that you can't replicate. Because it's Jon's custom engine he is in full control of every single aspect of the game. Every technical detail.

I'm prototyping the first minigame that will be featured in Bedabots. Just a very simple "autorun and jump" kinda thing, which we're using to justify making sprites for running and jumping. Thoughts on this jumping speed? Does it look crisp enough, or should I fuck with the numbers some more?

i think jon is just a control freak. unity and unreal games always have a certain "feel" to them and he wants to be able to control everything. most devs are willing to deal with a certain amount of jank in their game, but this guy just can't. casey has an article about the "walk monster" about working on the witness, talking about how he tried to eliminate any possibility that the player might get stuck. it just seems way to overengineered to me, but he goes really far to make his games perfect or as close to his vision as possible.

>Because it's Jon's custom engine he is in full control of every single aspect of the game. Every technical detail.

To what end? He's just reinventing the wheel in order to produce the most basic-ass puzzle games. I get it in 2007 he didn't have the option to just download a game engine and bang out Braid, but doing this in current year is retarded.

If he were building a groundbreaking or unusual game that literally couldn't be done using third party engine I'd get it, but he doesn't. He could have released 10 games by now if he'd focused on gamedev rather than enginedev.

Nevermind, the middle classes and women who want to virtue signal by purchasing from lgbt safe "appearing" corpos.
>>
my game really does suck
>>
>>488530024
This is bullshit. Having made a good game is small consolation if I have to suck dick for a living after a year because the game didn't sell enough.
#1 gamedev objective should be to earn enough money to live comfortably. If you can't make a "good" (whatever that means) game within that one constraint, then you've failed.
>>
>>488530284
>>488530395
If anything, what I'm producing is appealing to the AGP troons, who happen to be the majority of mtf trans people out there.
I'm not making "safe sexy", or pushing politics to these people, just something that is directed towards their main motivation - horniness.

Big corpos i referenced wasn't just meant to be solely about the games industry.
>>
>>488530415
NOBODY is selling to troons directly, it's all for the ESG bucks. if you put all the LGBTQPETC together they account for less than 5% of the population.
>middle classes and women who want to virtue signal
they could take it or leave it. if they are already buying your game they might virtue signal about it. but will they buy it just to virtue signal? no. absolutely not. SJW-coded games generally don't sell. at best they get a review bonus because all reviewers are big city trannies and WILL actually increase your score for echoing their politics. but professional reviews don't matter any more so you'd be a decade behind the meta if you put leftist cancer in your game to sway reviewers.

Everything that you get, material or not, is not necessarily to be used as another fuel to the machine.
That medal that you are free to put on your chest, or keep in your pocket, present or not, does not have to consume the achievement that has been achieved.

You have a goal, a destination to reach? Fair. But aren't you just moving the goal point when everytime that you reach a milestone, you consume it for more?
I suggest you accept the deeds, no matter how small they were, and realise that you can still pursue without consumming your prior achievements.

What's the point of dying if all you did was burning what you obtained for more pain.

If all trans people were doing was trying to quietly get on with their self-destructive little lives I'm sure they wouldn't be so prominent in the cultural conciousness. But what you're seeing aren't trans people, they're trans/lgbtqia+ activists. If you saw fat acceptance activists all the time trying to change the school curriculum to teach our kids that being fat is perfectly healthy, or crying that a videogame doesn't have any fat representation, or trying to get people fired for saying that heart disease is real, then you'd probably have some more opinions about fat people.

In any case troons are prominent in gaming simply because it's a hobby that appeals to losers.

If ChatGPT isn't bullshitting me, Unity is capable of doing palette cycling. It would save on space a bit not having unique sprites for lit and unlit tiles. start with a square that represents your player and have him move around and do a daily routine by just walking to different colored squares that represent a bed, kitchen, shower, tv, exercise etc. then show stats on the side for hunger, energy whatever.

then do the next smallest step you can think of to improve it, and the next, and the next... and one day you will have a full game.

Yeah, slapping your whole intro sequence in the beginning like that is pretty retarded. And the massive tonal shift after most of your trailer is over is also very questionable, especially when the moody vibing at the beginning doesn't even seem to reflect the game.

>want to make a simslike

>realize I can't even make placeholder assets that don't look hideous
don't overthink your assets for now, since you will redo them multiple times anyway.
>and have no idea even where to start with the development/programming of the game in the first place, i.e what system to implement first
start with rendering the world i.e terrain, walls, floors and objects. After that implement the systems to edit those things (build mode). After the build mode is done, add the characters and their interaction with the world. But you could skip the build mode and jump straight to the characters.
personally I went the build mode route.

What are you talking about, no there isn't. Old games didn't render 2D sprites as flat objects in 3D space. Even the few games that mixed 2D sprites with 3D space just drew them on the screen, with no consideration for perspective.
That kind of shit was neither possible nor necessary until 3D rendering became so trivial that fixed-perspective 3D was actually viable, and everyone started using stock game engines that were built to only deal with 3D.
Also I recognize that game, it's Songs of Conquest.

It was meant for the pause screen/menus only really, but might expand it for all gameplay, although it wouldn't be an ideal way to play.

Yeah, I have different finger positions drawn in for button presses and left thumb moving on a pivot.

Jiggling the gamepad, characters blinking, yawning and other character quirks at this moment in time is scopecreep.
Not ruling it out though, I do love little bits of personality like that in games.

game is Songs of Conquest
it's a clone of Homm3

like every game after homm4, it completely doesn't get it and ruins the formula
which is that Homm3 is a mix of turn-based tactics and RPG on the ADVENTURE map
all homm games since 5 and this clone get it wrong by not having any meaningful objects on the map that add to the "adventure" aspect. They just turn the adventure map into a shitty turn based strategy, focusing on resources and positioning

oh wait we're talking about the graphics
yeah it looks nice but something about the blurry bloom-y post-processing effects on upper-mid pixel art is just rubbing me the wrong way... there's no soul and crispness that pixel art of Homm2 had.
Personally not a fan of 2.5D with the 3d ground either, but that's taste
>>
>>488548141
it also lost the town screen with unique faction music that every single homm ever had
Instead, your buildings are part of the adventure map and are individual just like other adventure map objects
Which is interesting for like 5 seconds but the damage that's done to SOVL is immeasurable

the stupid shit where you no longer have mana for magic, but instead you get mana from how many units you have, just so that you can win EVEN harder if you have a big army, is retarded
it's called might AND magic, not might equals magic

[nitpick territory] and why are heroes walking on foot now? where horses?!

Looks like you haven't written code to correctly compute the face normals yet, though. I expect the terrain doesn't even have uvs.
But at least doing that in a day suggests the engine/framework you created is a reasonable environment to work in, which is pretty cool.

Blow has shipped more than Braid and The Witness, but yeah his pre-Braid stuff is completely forgotten.

This should actually be a lesson to just get over yourself and ship. People will only remember your first big success and praise you for being a genius who got it right the first time because no one will remember the 10-100 flops you shipped before it. See also John Romer shipping 90 games before Doom.

Cave story had the fortune to come out at a time where indie gaming hadnt exploded yet and was a fair amount of quality higher than its peers, its a similar story with a lot of early indie successes, the bar is a lot higher now and engine devving will only put you further behind. Players don't care that your game has custom tooling and is from scratch, they just want to play your game.

The majority of players wont even know what engine you're using (unless you didn't pay for a license OR you put a splash in for some reason), and an even smaller subset of those players will actually care about the engine. Also Unreal is perfectly optimizable for low end systems, just dont put everything on tick and disable most of the new "good" rendering features.
>>
>>488560165
>Sounds like you're basically saying "name one thing but not that thing"

>Players don't care that your game has custom tooling and is from scratch,
And even if you want to use custom tooling, it's so much faster to do so in an engine
I think any big AAA open world game uses custom tooling, but they're sane and don't waste time writing everything from scratch. They will hook up Houdini to their engine, write some custom editor features, etc.
And they use the custom tooling to get good results, rather than as an excuse to get sub-professional results (which is unfortunately part of the appeal of indie enginedeving)

start over and this time:
1. make sure your game idea is something people want, by marketing it. if it feels impossible to spread the word stop what you're doing and change the game until people give a shit.
2. make content and polish. FINISH the game.
3. only after these two steps, release your game.

0 reviews means you didn't do 1. or 2. or both.

Cost per employee is more than just employee salary. You also have to deal with insurance, legal, and other overhead. Rule of thumb is that cost per employee to the company is about 1.5 the employee's pre-tax salary, so the average is probably closer to 150k, which is pretty standard for mid-level programmers in California.

two games and a programming language, so mostly programmers, some artists I would presume. composer is doubtful. I would expect Blow to outsource that sort of thing. reason being, his games take so damn long to make, a musician just wouldn't have enough work to stay busy. keep in mind even Marty O'Donnell was responsible for all audio on Halo, not just the music, and even got involved with writing sometimes. and those games were made in about 2 years each.

as was I?

"We’re working with two different architecture companies," Blow explains. "There are some that are building architects, and also landscape architects to do grounds around the buildings and island shape in general. Before we started working with them, I was doing things kind of like I did in Braid. I’m going to build some puzzles and build some buildings, and I don’t know anything about buildings, so I’m not even going to try to make it interesting. I’ll make it a box with whatever I needed for the puzzle inside. For a long time, The Witness had a bunch of these box buildings, and then some of them I made a little more like actual buildings. But the idea was always that someone who actually knows about buildings would come along later and make it better. So that’s what we’ve been doing lately."

The architects that Thekla has employed from the firms of FOURM Design and David Fletcher Studio were tasked with an interesting dilemma. Bring an authenticity to the game world, but maintain the goals of game design that Blow considers paramount. "There’s actually a lot of iteration and back and forth once the architects proposed what the design for a building or landscape needed to be. We go back and forth until we figure out what is going to work for the game. We usually minimize it a little, strip it down to the most basic list of interesting elements, so that’s a very carefully constructed flow of movement, interaction, and intention. Architects don’t usually think that way. So it’s been really interesting for both of us."

A more specific question I suppose.

Online cheating and hacking is a huge issue especially in competitive games.
Hosting dedicated servers is also very expensive and would require a 3rd party hosting service.

Would I be a crazy person to release the first version of the game with p2p networking and then work on implementing dedicated servers and all that shit when/if the game is successful?

Hey man, don't get too discouraged. Your game is not perfect - there are some odd quirks here and there, but it's by no means bad, I'd even say it kind of reminded me of ROTT but with actual level design.
Marnix feedback was 90% bullshit, "i'm a boomer shooter guy" my ass, spouting the most mouthbreathing takes ever and ignoring the most obvious shit in a very linear level (nightclub).
It was obvious from the very beginning that they're just grifting, and it shows by the fact that the only games they couldn't shit on was ToK and Marmoreal aka "extremely polished games".
It's fine to try and salvage pinches of feedback from the slop that was their stream (it was very hard to watch for me), but don't take it too close to heart. I understand that it's painful to hear someone just bashing your game for no reason, but consider it not as a "dev giving feedback to a fellow dev", but "a noname casual grifter trying to lift themselves up by punching down". Cuz that's what they did.
Keep your nose up, man. That stream was a shitshow, and every game streamed got the short end of the stick.

Here's what you do: You focus solely on peer to peer. Don't even THINK about dedicated servers. Because if you do, you'll be doing a lot of worrying for nothing because your game probably won't be popular. However, if the game turns out to go popular after all, it's not a big issue to take some extra time to get the dedicated server working. In other words: Don't take the risk to do unecessary extra work early. Take the risk of doing extra work later on.

I always thought Braid was already a huge hit back in the days, and flooding the humble bundles after.

There's Skyrim cases where you know this shit is going to sell well for the time involved on it (and that might have change a bit since Starfield), but how can you expect Braid, so many years after the fact, to have such a powerful impact?

The guy definitively ain't dumb but all of this over expectation seems very weird to me. Almost alien in terms of disconnection.

I guess it's just him living in a bubble. Imoho the point of remaster is either accessiblity(both in hardware compatibility and QoL improvements) or graphical upgrade, neither of which Braid suffered from. Also puzzlegames in general don't have much replay value, if you played Braid back in the Xbox arcade days, how much you'd wish to try it again? So the most notable new feature is the commentary.

Some of what I did today:
>at runtime, script scans a specific folder in game directory for resource files
>each file is loaded into a dictionary, and keyed by its filename (after the extension is trimmed off)
>options list is populated with these keys for the player to select from
>when one is selected, the script arranges the given name/family name fields in the proper order for that language (determined by a boolean in the resource)
>script then generates a name in that language, by drawing randomly from PackedStringArrays for given and family names in the selected resource
>by keeping it all modular with each language contained to its own resource file, the hypothetical user can pick and choose which ones they want to feature (or make new ones to mod in, only requiring a regular text editor)
This is my first time dabbling in finding/loading resources automatically via script instead of manually specifying them in the editor, so I'd like to imagine I'm making progress.
