I'm planning out a game that has both stealth and action, with the stealth part coming first. It took me a minute to figure out how to visually get across the idea of stealth using limitations similar to what could be done on an NES. I hope the diagram on the right makes sense.Using palette cycling, the tiles could light up if a light source moves across them, like if an enemy is patrolling with a flashlight. Even if the light passes by your character, you can remain hidden in objects like barrels or other objects layered in front of the player like a bush. Certain tiles and objects could undergo palette cycling to further sell the illusion of a light source. Thoughts?

Maybe the title which is sometimes in the capsule art, but what I almost always do is mouseover every capsule art in whatever list I'm browsing to see the name, genre and the thumbnails before I decide whether to visit the game's page. In fact I'd say the capsule art is the one thing I don't pay attention to because it's pretty small and half the time I don't know what's on it anyway.I should admit that I'm a thirdie and that I only buy the games on specials so picrel is what I see of the capsule art (very little recognizable) and I check every one of them my mouseover as on picrel.

Good capsule art done by contracted artists has become cliche. If you want to stand out, you need BIG BOLD BAD CAPSULE ART.
>>488516360The difference is how quickly and easily you can see what the game is about without even clicking on Steam. >>488524816Okay, let's make the crazy assumption then that when you see any game, regardless of its capsule art, you instantly remember exactly why you wishlisted the game, you instantly remember what stood out about it and made you think "I want to buy this" and that you can remember that much information indefinitely because you're apparently a superhuman being. Good for you and your superpowers I guess.Let's say you're going to buy some ketchup, and each ketchup section has the brand logo above it that's very clearly associated with the ketchup they're selling. If you look closely at the bottles you can clearly see what it is, but they have stands or something or boxes they're in. That's the equivalent of capsule art, it's the first thing that stands out at you and makes you think "this is the thing".Thronefall's capsule art looks nothing like the game. It's distinctive which is cool but when I look at it it's just that. It's an unlabelled cardboard ketchup box containing thronefall-branded ketchup. It already looks cheap compared to its neighbours.

>>488525426>people selling the shovels do.almost every game middleware/tool company I know has an origin story as game tech developed for the company's previous life as a game studio. One company I worked at put it as "they were better at making tools than they were at making games".

>>488528794The answer is yes, it could be done in UnrealEngine and Unity and other 3D engines. But actually the answer is no, because while you might be able to create something that looks and plays the same, there is so much more going on under the hood that you can't replicate. Because it's Jon's custom engine he is in full control of every single aspect of the game. Every technical detail.
I'm prototyping the first minigame that will be featured in Bedabots. Just a very simple "autorun and jump" kinda thing, which we're using to justify making sprites for running and jumping. Thoughts on this jumping speed? Does it look crisp enough, or should I fuck with the numbers some more?
Taking some days off. Have some wisdom post.
>>488528794i think jon is just a control freak. unity and unreal games always have a certain "feel" to them and he wants to be able to control everything. most devs are willing to deal with a certain amount of jank in their game, but this guy just can't. casey has an article about the "walk monster" about working on the witness, talking about how he tried to eliminate any possibility that the player might get stuck. it just seems way to overengineered to me, but he goes really far to make his games perfect or as close to his vision as possible.https://caseymuratori.com/blog_0005
>>488529708>Because it's Jon's custom engine he is in full control of every single aspect of the game. Every technical detail. To what end? He's just reinventing the wheel in order to produce the most basic-ass puzzle games. I get it in 2007 he didn't have the option to just download a game engine and bang out Braid, but doing this in current year is retarded. If he were building a groundbreaking or unusual game that literally couldn't be done using third party engine I'd get it, but he doesn't. He could have released 10 games by now if he'd focused on gamedev rather than enginedev.

They will hook up Houdini to their engine, write some custom editor features, etc.And they use the custom tooling to get good results, rather than as an excuse to get sub-professional results (which is unfortunately part of the appeal of indie enginedeving)

>>488569414as was I?"We’re working with two different architecture companies," Blow explains. "There are some that are building architects, and also landscape architects to do grounds around the buildings and island shape in general. Before we started working with them, I was doing things kind of like I did in Braid. I’m going to build some puzzles and build some buildings, and I don’t know anything about buildings, so I’m not even going to try to make it interesting. I’ll make it a box with whatever I needed for the puzzle inside. For a long time, The Witness had a bunch of these box buildings, and then some of them I made a little more like actual buildings. But the idea was always that someone who actually knows about buildings would come along later and make it better. So that’s what we’ve been doing lately."The architects that Thekla has employed from the firms of FOURM Design and David Fletcher Studio were tasked with an interesting dilemma. Bring an authenticity to the game world, but maintain the goals of game design that Blow considers paramount. "There’s actually a lot of iteration and back and forth once the architects proposed what the design for a building or landscape needed to be. We go back and forth until we figure out what is going to work for the game. We usually minimize it a little, strip it down to the most basic list of interesting elements, so that’s a very carefully constructed flow of movement, interaction, and intention. Architects don’t usually think that way. So it’s been really interesting for both of us."

>>488453870Hey man, don't get too discouraged. Your game is not perfect - there are some odd quirks here and there, but it's by no means bad, I'd even say it kind of reminded me of ROTT but with actual level design.Marnix feedback was 90% bullshit, "i'm a boomer shooter guy" my ass, spouting the most mouthbreathing takes ever and ignoring the most obvious shit in a very linear level (nightclub). It was obvious from the very beginning that they're just grifting, and it shows by the fact that the only games they couldn't shit on was ToK and Marmoreal aka "extremely polished games". It's fine to try and salvage pinches of feedback from the slop that was their stream (it was very hard to watch for me), but don't take it too close to heart. I understand that it's painful to hear someone just bashing your game for no reason, but consider it not as a "dev giving feedback to a fellow dev", but "a noname casual grifter trying to lift themselves up by punching down". Cuz that's what they did.Keep your nose up, man. That stream was a shitshow, and every game streamed got the short end of the stick.

>>488570462Here's what you do: You focus solely on peer to peer. Don't even THINK about dedicated servers. Because if you do, you'll be doing a lot of worrying for nothing because your game probably won't be popular. However, if the game turns out to go popular after all, it's not a big issue to take some extra time to get the dedicated server working. In other words: Don't take the risk to do unecessary extra work early. Take the risk of doing extra work later on.

Some of what I did today:>at runtime, script scans a specific folder in game directory for resource files>each file is loaded into a dictionary, and keyed by its filename (after the extension is trimmed off)>options list is populated with these keys for the player to select from>when one is selected, the script arranges the given name/family name fields in the proper order for that language (determined by a boolean in the resource)>script then generates a name in that language, by drawing randomly from PackedStringArrays for given and family names in the selected resource>by keeping it all modular with each language contained to its own resource file, the hypothetical user can pick and choose which ones they want to feature (or make new ones to mod in, only requiring a regular text editor)This is my first time dabbling in finding/loading resources automatically via script instead of manually specifying them in the editor, so I'd like to imagine I'm making progress.
