It is that time again game devs. I asked for help and still did not get the right answer. I checked tutorials, only got indian slop that did not get me desired answers. Even asked chatgpt, nothing.

It is times like this where I get giddy and smile to myself. I put on my thinking cap, put on my thinking flip flops and I head downstairs. From there I walk a circle in my kitchen whilst muttering to myself ideas and going step by step on how I can solve my problem and implement a viable solution while taking down notes on my phone. I enjoy being alive. I am happened, I am tired, I am fulfilled.

I found a fun thing I didn't plan for. The merchant can put up to four items in a sack. The worst items sell for five scrap. The sack which must contain at least one item sells for five scrap. The eggs are usually temporary minions but can be taken as flimsy permanent workers at the start menu. To prevent minion eggs from carrying items they spawn with dummy gear that is worthless and normally kills the egg when removed. The merchant can stuff the egg dummy gear in a sack and you can then sell the sack for five scrap. Each egg comes with four pieces of equipment, and you can take eight people at the start. Thus a merchant and seven eggs. All told it's a way to get more than enough to buy any single weapon at a shop in run mode, and leaves room at the start menu to take three weapon slots, and a drone slot on many ships.

Someone convince me to not give up on making a video game and start making a comic instead. I'm seriously asking, I'm looking for a reason to keep going with this hobby.
I just want to have something to serve as a creative outlet and share online for strangers to (hopefully) enjoy. I'm an artfag, not a particularly good one either, and I also can't code for shit. Having to fumble my way through even the most basic of game programming has proven to be a huge obstacle so far, and as a result I'm not making that much progress. It's very frustrating, because I really want to make something, but I don't have the ability required to make the thing I want to make happen at a meaningful pace.
On the other hand I could start drawing comics like I used to over a decade ago when I was an autistic teenager. Comics wouldn't need any programming knowledge or other skills I don't currently possess, I'd just need to start drawing. Maybe I wouldn't feel as fulfilled since deep down I want to make a video game, or anything interactive really, but I'd still probably feel more fulfilled making a comic than making absolutely nothing like I am right now.

Just gonna be 100% real with you, I'm the same way in that I want a creative outlet. I want it to be video games because they've been my main passion in life. But I'm a retard and can't code.

My solution? Just get Claude pro plan, 20 bucks a month and if you describe whatever you want to it, it can do it. It even has a projects thing now where you can upload your entire codebase so it knows how to add what you want to add. Just do that. No one will ever see the code, so it's not like using AI art. It's literally just making what you want to happen, happen. It's still your artistic vision.

Do that. Or just make a comic and cope that that's what you wanted to do actually all along. But that's my advice.

I don't even need AI anymore to code cause my game is more involved so I've had to actually learn from this approach how to code, but if you do this I guarantee it will work. You just need to be dedicated.

Does this qualify as a QTE? I kind of like it. It's like if you were playing Disco Elysium and suddenly have more choices available to you. Imagine Morrowind or Oblivion having secret reactions like this. It would add more depth to RPGs since the choices you see aren't all the choices you get.

My art also isn't that good, you could find much better in this general willing to work with you. Sorry.
>>491558465
I don't want to use AI, I think it rewards retarded people who are too lazy to learn. If I was going to make a game I'd want to actually learn the basics of how to code and gain something useful from the experience. I don't expect to make a cent, may as well get something from it.
>>491558643
tbf I want to make narrative based comics, not weekly strips. That anon isn't wrong that people really don't care about that shit these days. I don't mind, it's not like I want to make a living out of this anyways.
>>
>>491559050
honestly i feel like its a lot harder to make a (somewhat) successful webcomic than it is to make a (somewhat) successful game
for a game you can just copy other peoples ideas, a comic you need to actually have creativity and a sense of humor

>I want it to be video games because they've been my main passion in life
Consooming isn't a passion. Watching the whole MCU doesn't mean you're suddenly going to be interested in or at all good at filmmaking... Maybe for some people it'll spark an interest but they'll actually try making the thing instead of just mindlessly consooming it. Just because you've played games doesn't mean you can make them. And id say that most people who claim to be passionate about videogames don't know the difference between a passion and a coping mechanism for being unable to participate in normal life, and have in fact never actually had a passion.

I started programming in Adobe Flash and submitting shitty games to Newgrounds, I think making videogames is an appropriate creative outlet for me because it's part of my personal history.
>My solution? Just get Claude pro plan, 20 bucks a month and if you describe whatever you want to it, it can do it
This just highlights that we need to do more to gatekeep the shitters from this fine hobby.

Fuck Godot and fuck Juan. A few months ago there was some discussion on agdg about an old screenshot of Juan's twitter thread on instancing vs pooling with a few anons loudly criticizing Juan and calling him an idiot, which obviously led me to implement an object pooling system. Today I decided to remove object pooling and use instancing instead, and immediately saw massive performance gains. Fucking Godot, man. I hate this shit engine so much. I should have used Unity.

>>
>>491558585
honestly is a cool mechanic. I imagine a game where you can level up or focus on aspects of your personality or viewpoints like Disco Elysium and these can reveal hidden QTE dialogue options. If your character is more emotionally volatile, you can get triggered by a minor insult and yell or start a fight. If you're more cool headed and intellectual maybe you can realize a flaw in an NPC's logic and call them out on it. If you're a horndog with high charisma, you can take hints and score.
I guess even trash can have something to teach us.

>>
>>491561690
I doubt they kill performance as much as he seems to imply but it's multiple if/else if statements rather than 20 && in a single condition check. It's literally just condition 1 && condition 2. However I realized I could set it up to use only 1 condition per statement, maybe 2 for the first one as a safety net to catch bugs.

ive been working on a animation serialization + replay mechanic for my online turn based strategy game for a couple of weekends, and today i ran it for the first time and it worked on first try (except for 1 boolean check that i forgot to add). feeling pretty good about myself

feels like a lot of the problematic design elements are going away as of this new coming update. having simultaneous turns in a turn based strategy/tactics game by separating the action to 2 different lanes feels like kind of a breakthrough
>no more long turn times because you playing at the same time as your opponent
>no more watching them twiddle their thumbs for 2 minutes to move their unit, you just see an instant replay of what they did on their turn and then you're immediately off to play
>games are shorter overall because game speed is essentially doubled
>managing multiple fronts feel more significant now that you have actual lanes instead of 1 big fuck-off field of battle, less room for musical chairs cheese shit

Just make a bunch of puzzles, have them playtested, and throw the difficult ones into secret areas. Bam! The non-intuitive shit roadblock puzzles that would get your puzzle game negative reviews are now le deep artful ARG puzzles for your game's community to figure out and a positive feature.

From what I've seen and heard it's just an average boss rush game, "not great, not terrible" and so on.
The only reason people won't shut up about it is because of how explosively popular it is, except 90% of the playerbase is chinese for obvious reasons, remove that and the numbers will look a lot more normal.
The only thing to learn from this is that China is a pretty damn huge market, which is why AAA publishers love to suck chinese cock as much as possible at the west's expensive most of the time.

- 1 Hour 23 minutes fixing path drawing logic to only work once and only on nodes that are connected to discovered nodes AWA some bug fixes.
- 39 minutes tinkering with drawing paths.
My first implementation of path drawing logic just iterated over the entire adjacency matrix and drew a path for each true value, which means every path was drawn twice.
To fix this, I just iterate over the upper triangle of the adjacency matrix which gives all the edges of the undirected graph once.
Also fixed some bugs in the building code that didn't account for land type.
For the path drawing, I'm using a sprite2D, rotated toward the connected node, with region_rect set to a span the space and canvasItem.Texture.Repeat set to enabled. In less Godot-Centric terms: this just takes a texture and samples it for a certain region of the screen which is then transformed into position. I feel it's important to mention this because I've been working up my Love2D project in the background and aspire to do custom engineDev later.

PoE is literally the kind of game that only works if you have a lot of players. No way a guy who plays solo will ever figure out 90% of the builds on his own due to how long it takes to farm everything. That's the biggest flaw of having all those upgrades and items. If there's something to take from PoE, it's keeping your game fresh with rotating events.

Let me see if I understand:
- Turns in your game are atomic with respect to players, as in, players make multiple actions on their turn, but the other player doesn't do anything during that time.
- There are multiple 'fronts', effectively sub-games that are independent of each other
- The innovation is that you batch a turn in a replay and that you separate the battle into two independent parts so either player has less down time.
That's interesting. How exactly do the lanes affect the game then? Can troops move between the lanes or is it like Artifact lanes where you have to win two out of three lanes to win the match?

why is Unity SO much fucking harder to learn than Godot?
in Godot I went from 0 game dev experience to a prototype up and running in 2-3 weeks
on my first day I was able to follow an excellent 10 min tutorial to make a first person player character
I try to find an analogous short tutorial for Unity, all the results are fucking multi video hours long series, I find this video: https://youtu.be/f473C43s8nE?si=frDM8A9vO18Iqb2l
the structure of the tutorial doesnt work and the PlayerMovement script is broken and I have no clue how to fix it so after like 3 hours of trying to figure it out I quit

for Unity I tried setting up VScode but the fucking C# linter doesnt work because it says I dont have .NET (even though I have visual studio), the Unity plugin also doesnt do anything
I switch to Visual Studio and install the Unity add on, it also doesnt fucking do anything or provide any highlighting/linting

Meanwhile the in engine code editor in Godot works like a charm, and learning all the attributes/methods of nodes is a breeze because I can just ctrl+click any of the object/class types in the text editor and it brings me directly to the documentation (locally, in editor)

Unity UI is a fucking clusterfuck, the viewport is worse than Godot's, I get that its more full featured but the documentation is a fucking nightmare to navigate compared to godot

>muh resources
yeah fucking right, 99% of unity tutorials are fucking dog shit
Godot tutorials in general are more focused and much higher quality

AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA
FUCK UNITY

because i want to make money.

why dont you make something else if you just want to make money?
because i believe there's a better chance to get rich from game dev than from other jobs and i can do gamedev alone without an employer or team.

why do you want to make it alone?
because i can't see myself working with others, especially since i live rural and have chronic illness.

so why dont you focus on moving and improving your health?
because i havent found anything in over 10 years that fixed my health and also i want to live rural because i hate big cities.

so why aren't you working on your game right now?
because i feel lost. i dunno what specifically to work on.

why dont you know what to work on?
because gamedev is such a time and energy investment that starting without a good idea or good plan seems unreasonable.

and when will you have that plan/idea?
probably never.

so why dont you find a better hobby?
because i dunno what else to do. music is oversaturated and also requires touring and showbiz. webdev requires getting hired by big companies and moving there. everythings oversaturated.

so gamedev seems like your only option?
yes.

what's holding you back right now?
a) incapable of making high quality assets
b) uncertain about technical stuff like lighting and framerates
c) not totally sure what my dream game is

so what are you doing all day then?
nothing.

>>
I've figured it out! It's not about the playtime, it's about the players not dropping your game.
If you have 4 hours of playtime in your game (like for example Gone Home) and the average playtime is 3 hours, that's fine and means you've made a compelling game.
If you have 40 hours of playtime but the player average is 5 hours, then you've made a worse game than the one where the playtime is 3 hours.
So the goal isn't high playtime, it's players not quitting my game.
Which is intimidating for me because, going through my Steam library:
The Witcher 3 - playtime 2h 15m
Undertale - playtime 14m
Cities Skylines - playtime 1h 45m
FTL - playtime 24m
Shadow of Mordor - playtime 52m
Satisfactory - playtime 38m
Project Zomboid - playtime 21m (but this is because I'm a huge pussy)
Vampire Survivors - playtime 11m
XCOM - playtime 22m
All very successful games but I didn't find them interesting.

client host party games where 1 person hosts the lobby seem doable for an indie (think lethal company)
server client architecture is not viable since servers are expensive as fuck
idk how "competitive" you mean but if you mean like an actual competitive shooter, remember that CoD and the like used to use client host architecture and would handle disconnects with host migrations, so you dont need servers even for a competitive shooter, its just really fucking hard to implement network code as sophisticated as what CoD had and prob too difficult for an indie unless youre an expert in network programming

It wasn't made by the gamergate woman. It was primarily made by this guy, who got metoo'd without actually sexually harassing anyone.

Individually none of the elements stand out, but together I think they become greater than the sum of its parts and give an experience that you can't easily find elsewhere.
That's what I like about games, if your art is bad you can compensate with programming, if your programming is bad you can compensate with art, etc. I don't have to compare myself with Carmack for programming or the best artists on Twitter for my art, I just need to find my niche.

was asleep so not sure you'll get this

>- Turns in your game are atomic with respect to players, as in, players make multiple actions on their turn, but the other player doesn't do anything during that time.
not sure exactly what you mean. however players do make any number of actions on their turn and can make them in any order, and are only limited by their action resources.

there is never a turn for a player where they are doing nothing, they're always playing on either lane 1 or lane 2. when a new turn begins, both players are assigned a new lane to play on and given a shared turn timer. when they finish, they watch a replay of what the other player did on the other lane. i originally had it so that you can outright watch what your opponent is doing on lane 2 while you play on lane 1, but i realized that was fundamentally flawed because your actions should be agnostic of what is happening on the other lane. also it was difficult to focus on your own turn with that in mind. so i added the replay system instead.

>- There are multiple 'fronts', effectively sub-games that are independent of each other
they are independent, in that it is impossible to directly affect lane 1 from lane 2 and vice versa. but you can do things like retreat units from lane 1 and later move them to lane 2 next turn, or generate air strikes on lane 1 to use on lane 2, and so on. but essentially all your resources, units and techs can be applied universally to any lanes, and they simply limit where you can exert direct control at a specific time.

>- The innovation is that you batch a turn in a replay and that you separate the battle into two independent parts so either player has less down time.
yeah pretty much. this is the only tactics-style game designed like this that i can think of. maybe autobattlers are a bit similar? but this is like a tactics game (which may or may not be good)

cont.

>How exactly do the lanes affect the game then? Can troops move between the lanes
yes, there is a common "home" area for both players where they can be moving units at any time and any distance. this area is connected to the lanes by gates, which are only open to the lane that is currently active for that player. but preferably you don't want to move units between lanes too much because it takes time to retreat and redeploy them.

factions manage multiple fronts/lanes in different ways. the dedicated spec ops larp faction can CASEVAC units and redeploy them anywhere using a mobile FOB robot, the tech-vampire faction just uses spawning pits to constantly harass you with zombies, while the cloners will essentially build a city somewhere and then try to figure out the other lane afterwards.

>is it like Artifact lanes where you have to win two out of three lanes to win the match?
i'm trying out 2 lanes currently. the way i did it for now is that the top lane has 2 objectives to capture (which produce victory points every turn), while the bottom lane has 3 times as many resource-generating territories but only 1 objective. so essentially there's some strategy which lane you want to focus on, at least early. it's possible 1 lane will end up objectively more important than the other in a lot of games, but you can allocate any amount of resources to either lane, so i don't see it as a problem. the main goal of it is allowing the simultaneous turn thing to work. plus you can look at the map and see that the top lane is itself essentially split into 2 areas, so there's logistics on both the micro and macro scale.

Appeal to authority "Nintendo wanted to do it so it must be true", complete lack of proof or studies done on whether it "hurts sales" or not, and you a PC indie dev comparing yourself to an AAA company selling games on their own in-house console as if what Nintendo's legal team does has any bearing on your own situation, as if Nintendo DMCA-ing fan games, fanart and songs means you as an indie developer should do the same.
Enough AGDG for me, this place is dumber than usual in weekends.

Unity user here. Yes the tutorials suck because of how frequently the engine is updated along with how frequently they discontinue stuff. Makes finding relevant tutorials hard. I just hope Gamemaker doesn't have this problem, and hopefully there's normal people making frequent tutorials for it rather than just the one troon. No way do I want to watch his video's, I don't want to go "Who taught me? Umm uhh that troon over there"

I need to drop right into the middle of the game to see the true experience before making sure I'll be playing a good game. Not a game that only looked good. Nah I legitimately believe you are a pretentious fart-sniffing twat on the same tier as Phil Fish, except unlike him you probably have a bad game if you think youtube videos hurt your sales.
As a small time developer, with no marketing budget and no huge following, people sharing your game through absolutely any channel possible is preferable to them not doing so. Any argument about losing sales could only be applied to AAA games who need to sell millions.
Coffin of Andy and Leyley has 20k reviews at 10 dollars, even though it's a story driven game where you get the full game experience in a video. There's dozens such games and an entire industry of visual novels and RPGMaker games whose only redeeming factor is the story.
You're no different than devs complaining about Steam letting players refund the game. Bad game havers problems, I really can't relate.

>>
>>491606127
NTA, but "genre" is correct as the tag Walking Simulator is commonly used as a derogatory term.
>The name "walking simulator" has negative connotations, implying the gameplay is tedious and mundane. Critics of walking simulators contend that games must contain some kind of challenge, and walking sims would not qualify as "games" under this definition.[2] Early walking sims, often developed by female leads and featured LGBT themes, were attacked by Internet trolls tied to misogyny and homophobia, such as in the case of Gone Home. These attacks created further negative perception around walking sims.[1] The genre's emergence around the same time as Gamergate in 2014 also led to the name "walking simulator" being treated as a negative stigma.[3]
>>
>>491606325

One of my most Moly-esque ideas was a literal walking simulator where you'd just go for a morning walk along a path in a cute little town. As you walk you'd encounter a few locals along the path, who you could choose to talk to or ignore. Talking to them would unlock future conversation options and impact their actions towards you in future days of walking. That's all the game would be, going for a walk morning after morning, gradually building up relationships with the people you meet and finding new endings based on your interactions.
>>
>>491608150
>resources are a hack or everyone is lying about them

That applies to everything in godot.

>soulslikes
I don't hate the idea of them, but the implementation, yes. I've never gotten too deep into one.

>shitty nintendo platformers
I'm not sure how this connects. I have fond memories of the ones I played in childhood, like Mario 64 and Sunshine, but I haven't played any since my younger days.

>VNs
VNs are good, but I've never paid for one before. I believe I'm even credited on one or two as a translator. I read (and translate) plenty of LNs, WNs, manga, etc. I would likely never pay list price for any of those though. Pure VNs are not "games".

>AAAshart
I also don't hate the idea of them. Witcher 3 great while playing it, but looking back, it had very poor gameplay and replay value. I bought RDR2 a while back and couldn't get more than 2 hours into it.

The problem with a "Walking Simulator" is that it's simply less of a game. They're trying to take advantage of certain benefits consumers typically grant to video game content (e.g. lower graphical fidelity expectations because things need to be rendered in-engine) while not providing a what would typically be expected out of a game, which is gameplay.
>>
>>491608125
We did have walking sims, though. Example: https://store.steampowered.com/app/341540/TRIP_Steam_Edition/
>>
My idea for a game is a realistic space combat simulator. You'd need to keep your emissions down, launch probes that ping space with radar, get enemy ship signatures from millions of miles away, launch missile platforms that launch missiles at the enemies, then send follow-up probes to analyze debris and see if you hit the enemy, all the while trying to hide from the enemy doing the same to you.
But I'm making an RPG because I want to earn at least one dollar.
>>
>>491608125
I'm pretty sure it's nodev ideaguy codelets defending the idea of walking sims because they see it as one of the few viable game ideas they could potentially implement (although they will never try).

There's already a game like this and it's as boring as you can imagine. You actually wait for your attacks to hit in sped up time, but long time.

It's important for my game's data converter to run headlessly, because it's supposed to run on a headless server during builds.
For Ogre-Next this was accomplished by using the NULL RenderSystem, but for OGRE 1.0 no such RenderSystem is provided, so I was temporarily relying on an empty window being created for the converter to run.
Now I have implemented the functionality required to run the parts of OGRE I need without needing to initialize Ogre::Root and consequently bypassing the need for a RenderSystem. It was easier than I expected, just a matter of performing the steps Ogre::Root performs with the unnecessary parts omitted.
Now the 1.x converter runs headlessly.

your mistake is that you desire to reach the destination fast, but you're not willing to pay the price to reach that place.

Life doesn't work that way.
You wont magically become one day by mere magic someone like the guys you admire, doing some neurallink BS.

You gotta pay the price to reach the people you admire.

the point is not the amount of practice.

But did you study the theory?
Did you improve your workflow?
Did you learned tricks that improve the quality of your art?

The thing with art that most anons seem to miss is that you need to draw from imagination, but professionals artists all the time have a bunch of tricks to improve their art.

They use photo reference, video reference.
They do studies of the pose and shit like studies of the hands.
They hire a model to pose for them.

The thing /ic/ always said is that you need to learn first photorealism before doing anime.

the thing most anons can't understand is that as long as they study from books and online courses, and put effort into practice the theory, they will improve.

Sometimes your improvement can only be seen after 10 years.
But most anons think that you will never master a skill because they only give 2 weeks of time to master the skill.

I'm making one in godot and not rpgmaker because i dont want to pay for it.
>>
>>491586060
if Godot was such a breeze why are you trying to switch?
personally I think tutorials always absolutely suck regardless of engines and you probably just got really lucky with whatever Godot tutorials you followed, or you didn't stick around long enough to notice the flaws in what you copied from them.
I'm currently in yet another huge version change, manually porting my project from Unity 2021.3 to 2019.4 because I encountered an unfixable bug in 2021.3. so I am quite sympathetic to complaints about Unity right now, but I tried Godot and it was even worse. unusable imo. so if there were all these great tutorials for Godot it wouldn't tip the scales at all. the engine is in such a rough state, nothing just works. and "it just works" is still my expectation. I will never give that up. so for now the only engine I find acceptable is Unity 2019 and I will stick to it for years to come, I've decided. I want to pump out games, not "find work-arounds".

Not to be one of those really faggy crt is better people but people are really missing out by not playing any game from gamecube/ps2/xbox era or before on crt/with a crt filter. I won't pretend like it adds a lot but it removes a lot of problems and weird stuff you would notice now which devs didn't intend for you to notice. Like a background in a fighting game being weirdly low res stands out a lot more when everyone now plays on a crisp high res hd screen, a lot of little things add up to make viewing games without a filter worse. And more devs should include filter options built in if they're gonna do a retro aesthetic.
