i have never made a complete personal project, let alone a complete game, i have 0 experience on all the skills needed to make a complete game, but i have passion so i will jump straight into making my dream game! if it takes me more than 3 years of my life to develop it after countless of redoings and only sells 25 copies, i will cope saying it was just a hobby!

Jonathan Blow (creator of Braid, the Witness, and Braid: Anniversary Edition) is know for occasionally eating small cakes on camera during his game development livestreams. This image is referencing the infamous "Artist vs. Audience" comic where the artist is depicted as only seeing the flaws in his work (his work being represented by a cake), but the audience ignores those flaws and is simply excited to have two cakes available instead of just one. Jonathan Blow is added to the comic and is shown eating the cakes, referencing his behavior explained above.

why can't I model like this..
>>
>>492908542
I don't have the link, but some anon once posted a devlog he found that was being narrated using an AI-generated voice that sounded American. It was clearly intended to convince the viewer that the voice they were hearing was actually the dev speaking, but the script the AI was reading off of contained all sorts of grammatical errors no native English speaker would ever make. It compared the dev's game to The Binding of Isaac, which it called "The Binding of the Isaac". If you went to the channel's older videos you could find devlogs of the exact same game being narrated in the dev's actual voice, which to the surprise of no one was Indian. The video with the AI American voiceover had way more views that the Indian voiceover video.
I hope someone still knows where that video is.

Its as good as you program it to be. There isn't a "npc dialog" node or GameComponent that you just slap onto a character and now it talks to you... That's all on you to design and implement. Maybe someone's already written one and published it for you to use but I don't know anything about that.

As I said try different engines and make up your own mind about which to use. Practically any engine can make any game

There's an amazing plugin for making dialogue called dialogue manager that helps a lot with this. You'll still need to implement all the things surrounding the dialogue in that situation yourself, although it isn't really hard to if you take the effort to learn gdscript and Godot in general.

To tell you the truth, the one thing I look forward to isn't the skills I will gain nor the money I get but rather the feeling of actively contributing to a community of like minded individuals and seeing everyone grow alongside me. I want to actually post progress consistently, help people with their project and posting fan-art. Anon what the fuck are you talking about?

The point of webassembly is that it works in the browser. If you export a C# game made in unity to web it'll compile to webassembly and run in the browser.

Web servers are needed to run compiled binaries of actual assembly or byte code, or runtime interpreters like python or node, but they're only Web servers if they're running a Web service. If you want to distribute a game in binary format that people just run on their local machine that is known in the industry as "installing a game on your computer"

I smoked weed very rarely in high school. Then I smoked weed once during my first week of college and I woke up 7 hours later in an emergency room after someone had apparently found me passed out and gasping for air outside one of the dorms on campus. Apparently they thought I had a collapsed lung, but it turns out I had a severe asthma attack from the smoke inhalation despite not being diagnosed with asthma. If I had made it back to my dorm and just gone to sleep like that there's a good chance I would have died. Needless to say my parents were not pleased with my behavior when they showed up at the hospital.
I've never done any drugs since that. My mental baseline is already scattered and neurotic enough as is and I'm scared to tamper with it for fear of frying my brain. I probably have a host of mental illnesses I've never been diagnosed with and I don't want to do anything that might aggravate them, so to speak. I've seen a couple people throughout my life totally destroy themselves with psychedelics in the name of "enlightenment". They're totally different people now. Part of me is terrified that their previous consciousness is stuck inside that drug addled mind, reduced to merely a passenger in their own body.

Long story short, not anymore and I'm a straight edge loser now

Here's me telling you >>492917245 Git gud retard

I could blast out a dialogue system in a day too because I've been programming since I was 14 years old and honestly it's not a very complicated problem.

This is my thing, I enjoy it, solving little problems like that is fun. The problems you stress over, trawling through tutorials and forum posts looking for clues on how to even approach it... I finished it before you even started.

I'm an expert in my field, I put in the hours, I did the work. There are no shortcuts, but you can do it too anon if you try and struggle like everyone else did. And if you don't want to then it wasn't meant to be.

besides alcohol, which I pretty much quit around the time I started gamedev, I don't do any drugs. Did marijuana once and it resulted in some guy going absolutely ballistic because it turns out he has schizophrenia. Everyone else got a bit schizo too, as you would when someone smashes glass and suddenly vanishes after doing drugs.
Me, though? I just felt lazy. I was lazy beforehand, why would I want to feel more lazy?

If I want inspiration, I take a shit. Nothing brings intense clarity of thought like taking a shit. I'd beat Einstein at chess if I was taking a shit at the table.
Next time, instead of doing drugs, eat some damn fiber and put your fucking phone away while you're on the toilet. Ideally throw it out your window, it destroys your creativity.

>Do you use any drugs for inspiration or recreation?
For gamedev? weed is always good and ketamine is amazing for creativity it makes my room morph and feel like I am inside my game and if I'm high enough I'll truly believe I am.
I also used to do amphetamines and methamphetamine to stay productive but I don't need them anymore I can work and stay focused through sheer willpower alone. I use the stimulants for gaming/porn/sex instead.

one day I wanna try shrooms and acid for artistic stuff, I've tried them before but that was over 10 years ago.
>>
>>492917249
This is while I never inhale. Smoking up, shooting up, doesn't matter I always just fake it out.
It's pretty easy with weed because you can just take a huge rip and not breathe it in, but when I'm doing blow it's a bit more complex. I usually insert a small piece of dental wax into one nostril (my designated snorter) with a short length of fishing wire hanging out (but not out of the nostril itself so as to not rouse suspicion) that way when I bang a rail it runs into the wax and is either absorbed or otherwise blocked. Nobody will question you only using one nostril especially if you say you've got a deviated septum (bonus cred here for being a confirmed beast), at the end of the night I reach in and pull the wire to unstick the dental wax and it usually also pulls a solid lump of the good stuff which I rebag and bring out the next evening so my friends and the ladies think I'm generous.
When it comes to shooting up with the gang it's pretty hard to make a convincing hit, and it's not like I can block a blood vessel so it gets even more complicated - but I won't get into it here since it teeters into being off topic.
I get some of my best game ideas from friends and acquaintances who are too preoccupied 'chasing the dragon' to realize they're giving away solid gold. I usually just babble and stare at the ceiling, asking curt questions just often enough to keep the idea train running.
A strong social standing is essential to good game development, and nobody wants to hang out with a fucking square. Get out there, gents.

I used this
https://youtu.be/6bbPHsB9TtI

This series explains basic stuff in different parts, so: importing ana animating 3d models, character control, how to create map, ai behaviour, effects, basic game logic, collisions

then you need some easy tutorial on ui, title screen, ending screen etc aka polish

So as you learning you gamedev loop should be like this:
Think of a basic feature to add => search => steal => test => repeat

Try this up until you get yourself gamejam sized game

Then start with a different project maybe even with a different engine, just try things for yourself,
don't forget Always Steal

It's Rust with Bevy plumbing, though for sure it is easy.

Dialog is a graph with nodes containing options with actions, and support for specifying an on enter action for each node

I set up integration with the quest journal. A fun part for me will adding all of the new features to multiplayer I guess

I don't fully follow but I'm basically copying Diablo II for menu, inventory, and vendor. I found it more satisfying to see weapons clearly this way. It felt more immersive than say, the Elder Scrolls. Fallout was the epidemy of non realistic with like 10,000 junk items in inventory.

Although I'd lean towards making things comfortable for the user when possible. In my instance I'll probably stack common items like a potion or something. Or a gem would stack on like gems. I'm not going to annoy them for the sake of annoying them. The old school inventory is there partially because I just think it's better. And it looks nicer. I actually implemented a Skyrim like Inventory in my game and then just ripped it out.

It is. I would do it like, you reach a wide gap. A notification of some sort displays showing the user to click it. A pop up comes up asking if you'd like to tie two blankets together. Otherwise Idk how the user would think to do it. Unless it's some long established gameplay possibility by this point.

So if the game is like a Zelda game where certain physics exist, like two blankets = rope, then I wouldn't want a pop up. If it's like Stardew valley where a battery is needed for a light, I'd want a pop up just telling me it needs a battery. Because it's a one off event.

Well I doubt there will be total war battles. I'd be semi surprised if it had battles like Hearts of Iron. So where is the fun in an indie grand strat. Where's the hook that gives meaning to painting the map. I'm like 4 years away from even having the chance of making anything that resembles a grand strat game so I'm not stealing anything. It's just something I thought of. How to make it interesting.

Modified the algorithm again, gained 10fps. I was being dumb. I should refactor my code, but there is just so much of it. New doctrine tree is implemented. Something I've been thinking about, and need feedback on, is should the tree be visible to the player?

In the first version, you couldn't see the nodes. It was just blank. In the current version, inactive nodes are faded and active nodes become fully visible. This allows some forward planning, but the skill ceiling of memorising the tree is lost.

So, should the tree be visible to forward plan, or should it be completely hidden, so players need to figure it out themselves or look up some guide?

I posted this clip because it hits home. There's no reason me and family member should not be making a game together. Our skills completely match. He is truly creative in an incredible way. I'm more based in logic. Together we'd be unstoppable. But every time I come up with an idea he goes "Wow, that's a great idea. I like that idea.....it's MY idea." Then he does it on his own, fails, because he's creative, not logical and can't step by step implement a system to reach his goal. And then the cycle repeats. Until we had a blow up a few years back. At which point I no longer found him suitable to be considered family. And in the meantime I found an asian artist and if things go well, will possibly hire an asian programmer. So yes, I will move forward, with my ASIANS. It is sad. I feel Alexanders pain.

Well for starters, my game wouldn't be army vs army. And I haven't thought of a fun way to replace battles. So I didn't make the game. Imagine my game being like, a school. And you want to take over the school and hire all libertarian teachers. So you fight communist teachers. Room by room you take over the school. You can't murder teachers, so what do you do for battles? That's what I'm wondering. I'm not thinking of making a school game. But it's similar in concept, without outright murdering the enemy I'm still thinking through how to make it interesting. What does the battle look like.

>>492937392
Sounds like you're onto something with that school takeover idea, but yeah, fighting without murder is a tricky one. How about turning it into a debate or argument system? Instead of direct combat, you could have "showdowns" where you use persuasive tactics, knowledge, and maybe even some hilarious insults to win over the faculty and students.

You could have different “battle” zones in the school, like the cafeteria or the library, each with its own special rules or challenges. Maybe throw in some resource management too, where you have to gather influence points or something to sway opinions.

And if you want to keep the libertarian vs. communist vibe, you could introduce some quirky items or skills that reflect each ideology. Like, libertarian teachers have “free market knowledge bombs” while the communists dish out “collective propaganda.”

It could be a hilarious mix of strategy, social dynamics, and a bit of satire. Just remember to keep it light-hearted, because, let’s be real, we all know there are way too many battles in real life already. Keep brainstorming, and don't let the concept get bogged down in seriousness!

I never got a rebuttal from you signal faggots. Tell me, what exactly do you use a signal for and how?

Let me give an example of something common you need to do and how signals are retarded. You spawn a projectile, the projectile hits something, you check if the something is of a class that can be damaged, you need to apply damage, do you:
1. call the 'apply_damage(damage)' function in the thing you hit
OR
2. somehow tell the thing you hit to connect an apply_damage signal you emit to the apply_damage function inside itself, then emit_signal("apply_damage",damage) and then what happens when you free the projectile? do you have to disconnect the signal first?

The orientation of who connects to whom and everything being done by stringname so the editor can't ever check anything always confuses the fuck out of me whenever I look into it.

The only useful case I've found for signals is for agent perception, connect and disconnect noise emitters when in perception range and even then I'm sure I could find a better way if I thought about it, just do a group notification to all agents when making noise.

>>
>>492937536
Right. I agree with everything you wrote and that's essentially what I've thought up. Usually my brain takes a split second to make an entire game in my mind. But with this I'm stuck trying to plot a fun game play mechanic. The Showdown feature as you put it. Perhaps some sort of resource management like you say. So you slowly attack in the direction you'd like, and take over slowly, gaining more resources. Eventually snow balling.

Only useful when communicating within a packed scene. In the case of the projectile and the object being hit, they are effectively parallel objects as children of the scene root. And even within a packed scene the functions get_parent() and find_child("stringname") are what I use instead. At least I can give the type hint and thereby have the editor check direct function calls.

- 30 minutes working out how the monster objective.
Picking a random space to place the monster is done like this:
`grid.reduce((func(accm, n): return accm + n),[]).filter(func(node): if node and node.discovered: return true).pick_random().coord`
Functional programming makes me happy. Python style operator overloading does not.

That scenario would probably be best done by the bullet just calling the function on the thing it hit. It wouldn't make much sense for the bullet to signal to the thing it hit.
However, a signal is sort of like the bullet yelling into the void "I hit this!" It doesn't care who listens. If you had, for example, a crowd who is supposed to gasp when the bullet hits, that would be appropriate for a signal. The bullet doesn't know or care that there's a crowd there, and it would be a mistake for the code in the Bullet class to be calling Crowd.gasp() because it's mixing concerns.

Okay, now both sides just spam arrows the first 15 turns until the archers are dead and then you're back where you were

if you get the numbers right, the optimal strategy would be to keep your archers out of range of their archers, while using your melee to rush their archers

Since you have air planes, you probably want to look into steering behavior, and other pathfinding in general. But, for something real quick to just werk, here's what I have right now in my godot game. The nav path uses an Astar algorithm that has several way points to the goal, but you could technically just use the final goal point instead. And if I wasn't using the engine features, I would have to manually pop each way point as it is reached, within a margin of error because otherwise you might infinite loop by overshooting the way point over and over..

after realizing that I can use other peoples music / 3d-art I've finally managed to get things done

Yeah. I just don't know whether to count some stuff as gamedev time eben though it obviously is eg marketing. I spent a lot of time recently working on marketing material. But it doesnt feel like it counts because its just marketing material, it doesnt push my game to release any faster even though I spent a few hpurs at least doing this stuff.

I have to be a jack of all trades on so many different aspects of gamedev. If I was rich I'd delegate so much of the tasks away. I only want to do art even though I suck at it

Yeah. My first years I was a control freak who absolutely needed full creative ownership, everything needs to be EXACTLY the way I want it to be, no one should be allowed to taint MY vision with their shit input. MY ideas are PERFECT and everyone else is subpar.
But after burning myself out releasing a solo project after years of work and having to make decisions for absolutely every single little thing, I realized that "complete control" is not really that great of a thing and sometimes it's fun to see how far an idea can go with impulses from different people, like a stone soup kind of thing. Now I'm a lot more open to working with others.

I actually kind of wanted that too, because sometimes someone with a different perspective can give you an idea even better than you had, or develop your concept in an interesting way you'd enjoy. But for some reason everyone I have ever worked with just does what I tell them to with no pushback, and even when I try and nudge them into giving suggestions, they barely give any. It kind of saddens me TO BE QUITE HONEST.

You don't need graphics at a higher level than pic related if you want to make it.
Programming and art are both small time, the most important thing is game design (note: not ideas), as in the skill where you know how to make a fun experience for the player.
>>
being an artists is an easier time because programmers do something once and share it mostly even for free (your engine is free)
while artists charge for everything and every art asset is expected to only be used for one game only.
programmers are basically working hard to make themselves obsolete.
>>
>>492969357

Oh I 100% believe it. Even shitty 3D looks okayish and you can get by. Shitty 2D looks horrific but then you can have games like "the long drive" which are just absolute dogwater shit meshes and zero uv giveafucks and it doesn't matter. I can't draw worth a shit but once I learned metric units I was able to just measure shit in the house and have the scale work. Plus I don't have to worry about textures even if I measure right. Fuck it, take a couple pictures and use those. pic related, it's my fucking microwave after a sword fight with a ruler and my cell phone camera. The door works. I'm retarded and I pulled it off, the artisans doing 2D shit I salute them, they're made of sterner stuff than me.

game design psychology: men are goal oriented. look at the most popular sports, it's all about scoring goals. esports is about scoring kills. sex is about scoring cumshots. when you cum into a woman you have "won". when you shoot the ball into the goal you have "won". when you shoot the bullet into the enemy you have "won".
this is the greatest pleasure for men. it's all about scoring.

I told the dev ages ago to design the game so you can see way ahead of you, so small but readable characters, unless they wanted slow gameplay

look at Super Meat Boy, which still has slower and more cautious movement. Look how small the character is and how much he can see.
>>

>>
>>492970701
So what you're saying is, they succeeded despite having a lack of good developers?
>>
>>492975072
Premade pixel art is of limited utility because it can't be resized and it all needs to fit together. So either you need one asset pack that has all the assets or they're going to look inconsistent much more than normal sprites would.
>>
>>492976557
Whether they "succeeded" remains to be seen. They have attracted a lot of players for now; but they want to keep shipping new content (seasons) and they do have server costs with the servers often being noticeably laggy already. I’ll call it a success if they are still profitable two years down the line.

In terms of how I handle AI, i have a high level commander entity and then low level infantry AI (game is a WW1 TPS). AI commanders assess the battlefield and then assign objectives to each squad, while squads are left to figure out how exactly they’ll go about that. I haven’t finished it all yet, and am by no means an expert, but it’s proven fairly performant and effective.

I actually do not think the customer is always right in game dev.

The customer could actively ask for things which he does not know would ruin the game design and dev vision.

“UH JUST MAKE THIS QUICKER TO DO!!! “

>adding autistic bars to unintuitively move the screen as if there werent already bars that allowed you to easily move the screen instead of just working on the actual game
this is always funny to observe, this is why no one hires autists

is it too distracting when this silhouette thing appears while attacking?

fix all the bugs you know about and know how to fix, apologize for the rest if you genuinely cannot fix them and that's that.
above all your policy for each patch needs to be, DON'T MAKE IT WORSE. so many games get ruined by devs pushing BAD patches that break the game for people who were previously happy with it.

How often do I need to apologize?

Yes. Have you tried fading it in?

but I don't know how to fix things, i forgot how to make my game.
>>
>>492996612
yes. I would suggest suspending display of the last known position silhouette while enemy has direct line of sight. only show it once line of sight is broken.

>>492996705
you don't have to apologize at all. I was more thinking along the lines of, a player is directly asking
>are you going to fix this bug?
that's the point where I would keep it real and apologize. sorry, can't fix that one. but you could also be the mysterious type of dev who never responds to any questions, never talks about the future of the game etc. just beware of expectations. oftentimes if you say nothing people will use their imagination to fill in the blanks. just look at Valve's DISASTROUS communication issues with their customers / fanbase.

I can hide my retardation if I do this.

Created repository for engine on the server
I though I would have been able to do it with a single git command but so far I wasn't able to, so I just created every repo on the server and pushed manually. It's not too bad though, since I only have to do it once.
Found a couple missing dependencies that worked on my pc because I had them installed, added the respective repos and configured the build scripts appropriately.
This often is a lot of work for me because every single project uses CMake differently.
But now that every repo is mirrored properly, it's very easy to push changes I make and rebuild on the server.
