ARR-EW had multiple longstanding conflicts that hung over us and kept the pressure on. The war with Garlemald, the primals and the shadowy ascians that were responsible for them. We have smaller scale localized plots as well, but no matter where we went both of those continued to be a problem up until the final expansion. DT really suffers from us not having much reason to care about any of this. Even if Zoraal Ja led all of Tural to war against the world, nothing I saw in DT makes that seem like a true threat. They might win a bunch of surprise attacks at the start of their invasion, but they would get fucking *destroyed* by any organized resistance from Eorzea due to the difference in tech level. Even Alexandria doesn't seem like a true threat, its machine armies and airships were again destroyed pretty easily once the element of surprise was lost, so the idea that they could ever really take over the world is laughable.So the existential threat isn't there. Thats fine, a personal conflict can carry the story too. But DT dropped the ball again there by both splitting the story in half with two plotlines that have almost no overlap, and refusing to commit to the villain characters. Zoraal Ja has almost no characterization because most of his appearances he doesn't even talk, and Sphene everyone treats with kid gloves even when we're there to kill her permadead and everyone's like "Aw but she was nice to us :(" which saps any ability to treat her as the villain the story needs her to be. It could have worked if our goal was to SAVE Sphene and she ended the story free from her programming and alive as an ally, but it doesn't really work if we're just going to kill her anyway.So we need to introduce new villains. Ones who are interesting, dangerous, or charismatic enough that we should give a shit about them.

We spent the whole expansion with the twins and I can't think of a single thing that they needed to be there for, or even a personal moment we had with them. Y'shtola and Graha mostly show up for about 2 lines of dialog each. Thancred and Uriangier had at least something going on, but then they vanished from the story rather unceremoniously. Estinien was literally just there for no reason. This isn't just a failure to do something interesting with them, its actively bad because it means we are carrying dead weight where we should be having interesting party members. Every space that was filled by do-nothing scions in DT could have been filled by new NPCs with an actual connection to the story to build up and get us invested in. I get it. The scions have been onscreen a long time and gone through a lot. It can be hard to come up with new stories to tell with them now. But if you can't think of something for a given scion to DO this expansion, *leave them the fuck home*. Give us a new Gosetsu or a new Ryne instead of Alphinaud and Alisaie tagging along just because you think the fans will riot if they don't.
