what's stopping you from just using a placeholder name such as "placeHolderA" for a variable and moving on? then later you can replace-all when you've thought of a name. I rename my variables all the time when I refactor.

>MATH
Anyone here is a big brain math nerd? I'm stuck with Matrix, more exactly with *Inverse* Matrix.
The problem is that for some graphic API, I need to send those Matrix in a 4x3 format (removing the values that are always 0 for a regular Translation/Rotation/Scaling) and none of the engine usual math libraries handle it.
I managed to find on the net how to calculate the TRS matrix "manually", but searching for *Inverse* Matrix only return raw maths that are way beyond my brain capacity - and no actual game-ready-ish pseudo-code.

I was hoping that just calculating a regular TRS matrix but with Translation/Rotation/Scaling inverted would do the trick and give the Inverse Matrix, but apparently not because I get fucked up results.

Switching to Unreal would mean starting from scratch for the studio, but given their size, it's more practical and cost-effective in the long run. A rework involves removing legacy functions and could introduce spaghetti code due to interdependencies, while starting fresh avoids these issues by allowing features to be added incrementally. Both approaches have strengths and weaknesses, but either way, it would take years to see results from a new engine or incremental changes from a rework.

The engine has been in use since Morrowind, and each new iteration has been more of an upgrade or partial rework, reaching its limit, as evidenced by Starfield's shortcomings. Unreal continually modernizes and removes legacy components, unlike Unity, which struggles with legacy issues despite promises to streamline. My experience with Unity highlights these challenges, whereas Unreal, despite some issues, remains user-friendly and consistent over time.

I believe starting anew is necessary due to long-standing developers resisting change due to familiarity. This problem is prevalent in the industry, where superficial changes are made without addressing core issues. Although some argue it's expensive, the cost of not innovating is evident in Starfield's underperformance. Companies like CD Projekt Red have opted for Unreal, recognizing the limitations of their in-house engines. Ultimately, it's a tough decision, but they are a large company capable of making significant changes.

But, now I'm doing some shader stuff and it need the inverse matrix.
I don't know how to calculate and inverse matrix, and all I find on the net is either pure math that I have no idea how to translate into code, or "just use the engine's Matrix.inverse, lol" except those don't handle that compressed 4x3 format, only the normal 4x4.

The last values aren't always 0, just for the rotation/scale part, the 1 indicates that it's a translation, which is just the XYZ pasted in.

Depending on your handedness (what the engine expects) you might have to transpose the matrix too, which is just flipping it across it's diagonal.

Here's a function that calculates the inverse, you can check the determinant whether it's actually inversible (fabs(det) < EPSILON)

back in the day I tried Unreal (4) and Unity (5 point something) and immediately hated Unreal because it's all laggy and unintuitive and has a weird UI. so I went with Unity and didn't start regretting that choice until ~2020 when Unity versions became unstable dog shit. since then I've been looking at other engines from time to time but always conclude that the grass is sadly not greener.

most recently I tried godot 4.2 and it was okay-ish but I don't think it's production-ready for 3D games. it lacks too many features I take for granted in Unity and also I absolutely hate gdscript. C# support is an afterthought. do not touch. IF you use godot, you must use gdscript because that's the only thing the people who run the show care about. also you have to use Jolt physics because the default physics suck, and Jolt is basically undocumented. total jank. so yeah, I'm sticking with Unity for another couple years at this rate.

Unreal 5 has cutting-edge technology; all the big players are using it now, from Lumen's AAA lights to the incredible power of Nanite, which allows incredibly detailed meshes with very little performance impact. This is not just an engine; it’s an experience – a revolution in digital creation. Imagine crafting worlds where every pixel sings with realism, every shadow dances in perfect harmony, and every texture tells a story as vivid as reality itself. Lumen's dynamic global illumination transforms each scene into a masterpiece of light and shadow, bringing unparalleled depth and emotion to every frame.

Nanite, on the other hand, is the magic wand we've all been waiting for – it redefines what's possible by enabling billions of polygons to flow seamlessly, creating environments so detailed you can almost feel the textures. With Nanite, the boundary between the virtual and the real blurs, unleashing a level of creativity previously constrained by hardware limitations. The ease of use, combined with the sheer power of Unreal Engine 5, makes it not just a tool but a portal to the future where your imagination is the only limit.

That's why I chose it.

what are you noticing here? the lighting/volumetric fog?
>>
How do I get good lighting in Godot 4? I haven't found any good tutorials. I have an open world outdoor scene with random generated terrain but the problem is that all the shadows and highlights are like the exact same value. So the soft kind of light shadows that are on the surface because of ambient light are also in caves that are supposed to be way darker. I have tried playing with the world settings related to light but I haven't been able to make it look good. What's the secret here? I've seen other Godot projects that have good lighting

Since fonts came up, is it possible to have soul/personality in a pixel art game font? I looked at World of Horror for example and it just looks very sterile. Same with Va11Halla but I always assumed that was intentional to fit the "cyberpunk dystopian" aesthetic but now I notice they're the exact same fonts.

I don't use godot but what you're looking for will be some kind of GI solution like the voxel or SDF GI. I tried godot and didn't like these systems. the SDF one in particular has visible cascades, as in, you move around the world and see seams where the lighting goes from a higher to a lower LOD. it's bad. and the voxel stuff needs baking which wasn't an option for my project so I didn't look too deeply into that. I just remember seeing it having issues with reflections.
tldr: look at the voxel GI solution first, but know it has some issues like everything else in godot.

Well they tell you that Vulkan is the future, but in terms of Lindy Effect it is likely enough that OpenGL will keep sticking around. The OpenGL API is also simple enough that people will keep implementing it on top of newer APIs (e.g. Vulkan).

Just like people are making wrappers to run DirectX/DX12 on Vulkan/Linux, there is and will be OpenGL wrappers too, besides it's the most portable (even the web), compatibility wise and documentation wise intuitive framework for graphics. If you use the latest version (4.6) you're not even missing out on a lot of what Vulkan offers. Debuggability wise it has greatly improved and you can use RenderDoc for that.

Yes and no.
Roguelikes are fun and the games that do them well are fantastic and very addicting. Especially when they incorporate other elements and mechanics into death instead of just "hah, you died, do everything else again".

The problem, however, is that PLENTY of indie devs have found this to be an easy route to make a game with their own ideas. Incorporating gimmicks as a selling point to "stand out" from the rest. This has gone to the point where every fucking month or so there seems to be a new indie title with rogelike/lite mechanics that either get released or announced and it just oversaturates the indie scene so much.

"What's that? A sidescroller/isometric platformer? Pixel art graphics? Roguelike? ~20 bucks? Fucking sold!!!"

Especially when you consider the fact that not every indie dev company can pull this off. So not only do we have a market filled to the brim with roguelike/lite titles, but there's a high chance that the vast majority of them are ass with trashy mechanics, janky gameplay, deeply unsatisfying progression, bad level design, mediocre art direction and lack of content. This leaves only a select few to be note worthy.

It's like when battle royales became popular. It was the new hit thing with an easy to recreate formula where the only thing devs realistically had to do was change things JUST ENOUGH so they can claim to be different from the rest.

I chose Unity because C# which I already new and Unity seemed to have really good learning videos made by anons.

Unreal felt too difficult for me to use at first and it does take a lot of resources to run well, it didn't feel as intuitive as Unity and lack of C# made it hard for me to just throw my own stuff together while learning. I do plan to revisit Unreal again though but after I've released this Unity game first.

Signing up to Epic is a good idea though, they give out free games a lot and I keep an eye on Unreal engine and they do get some sweet free assets all the time too.

I think I was filtered by Unreal as I didn't know as much about gamedev.

Progress post.
I just semi-virtualised my scrollview so I can have hundreds of items in the list instead of having to flick through pages like most anons do.

I check which items are not in view of the viewport of my scrollview and I just deactive all the pictures/text/etc leaving just an empty box that keeps he scrollbar at the same size because deactivating the items completely caused the scrollbar to shrink. Now it just reactivates those elements when the item scrolls in to view.

Pretty neat huh?

this is the only correct choice. programming gives you full control of gameplay, music is easily the most underrated skill for solo indie developers. and the rest its just good to have a solid understanding of 2d art, sfx and writing. if youre making 2d games your understanding of shaders rarely needs to be very high, unless you want to make specific kinds of games, but generally if you have high programming skills you can learn what you need for shaders on the fly

I heard undertale music first before I found the game. Never played it but listened to the songs. They care very catchy for what they are and the visual design of the character is quite cool.

Mediocre writing isn't that hard but good writing is very hard. Fortunately the medium of video games don't expect writing beyond the level of children's novels.

the first undertale song on youtube has 24m views, see picture. the game sold between 5 to 10 million copies total. just on this alone youre already wrong. and then if we take into account that probably a small percentage of everyone who played the game listened to it... see >>498401362 also. its possible you just dont understand music, dont have a good taste, thus you cant understand when a game has really good, average or bad music

the topic is players wanting to play your game because of the music, pay attention
if they don't hear your music, why would they play the game? and if your game was appealing enough without players hearing the music, how important is music then?
there's a reason game studios have many writers and artists but usually only one composer. it's unimportant. if the game is good, the music willcbe perceived as good. if the game is bad, no one will care about the music.

im done speaking with you, you have no imagination, no soul, you cant even conceive of the kinds of games possible when you pay attention to music as you do with art or programming. game studios are routinely wrong about many things, using them as an example only points to your small mindedness and lack of creativity. i pity you, you shouldnt be trying to work in a creative profession while being so conventional and bordered with your thinking

>guy is making a game called "Thronefall" for years
>gets the idea for ancient ruins to decorate his levels, implying the "throne" has fallen and you're rebuilding the kingdom
How did he not immediately have this idea in the ideation or prototyping stage or once he named the game? How are ancient ruins not a default thing you would include in a fantasy level?
As an ideaguy nodev, I'm jealous of these people who are all action and no thought. Seems to be more valuable.
How do I just like make game instead of writing 10+ pages of design doc for every game idea I have? How do people start with no idea, a blank canvas, and just randomly create something without thinking much about it? I approach it from the exact opposite way and it hasn't worked for me so far.

when you are near death you deposit 100k USD into the mmo and you get 10 years all expenses paid plus a bunch of gold.

I suspect your sample size is in double digits in which case you can't make any conclusions.
>>
>>498407302
What I mean to say is when I have a game idea it always includes:
>detailed idea of mechanics and how they'll interact and fit in the larger gameplay
>setting
>art style
>rough idea of level layouts
>possible lore, history and characters
>ideas for soundtrack
>etc.
but when I see action-oriented devs make something they just have
>vague idea about a mechanic or two
and they get way farther than the chronic planners.
How do I stop myself from thinking too much about an idea and just start rapidly prototyping and letting it become what it will?
I feel like I narrow the possibilities for my game before I even try making it and I can't stop myself.
>>

when making a game, you need to nail things down in this order

1. mechanics. it's what your game is.
2. art direction. it will help market your game like nothing else
3. what it's supposed to run on, PC, consoles, handhelds, etc.
4. scope. you need to know how much time you can devote to it and which things you'll have to cut
5. lore and story. if applicable.
and that's it. you can get cheap music from pond5 or free from incompetech. you can make a capsule in a couple of hours, the trailer in a couple of days. good luck!

There’s always 2 units belonging together (they are a tribe/coven), can’t really see which on the pic unfortunately. Besides the unit texts it would be nice to also have a small text for each tribe. Everything doesn’t have to fit together, the overall story of the game is probably that different planets get connected through random dimensional shifts, so the tribes can be from totally different settings, but they can also have relations.
You can find the game on itch and there’s discord and telegram links in it, to contact me. But if you just throw some random unit descriptions ITT I’m also happy.

>How do people start with no idea, a blank canvas, and just randomly create something without thinking much about it?
I don't think that's possible unless you're making a game-clone or something that does not have complicated systems that interact.
I used to dev like this, just doing shit without a plan thinking I can just wing it, but I never finished anything. Eventually I lose steam when I realize not planning shit ahead of time results in dog shit systems that don't scale. This is when I project hop.
>How do I just like make game instead of writing 10+ pages of design doc for every game idea I have?
Is this a design doc that describes how everything works or just lore and stuff? Because I'm starting to think not planning enough is the reason I keep giving up.
>>
I might just step back to DX11 instead of DX12... DX12 just has so many weird edge cases that are practically impossible to test for unless you own dozens of test rigs with different hardware configurations...
>>
>>498418857
anon, what are you doing? you only need to make sure it works in different aspect ratios and that your shit is scaled according to either the height or width. you don't need to specifically test 1440p. it's a 16:9 resolution so if your game can scale UP and DOWN correctly it can do 1440p just fine out of the box.
please don't have a "list" for individual resolutions to test. you need to have a general idea of what your game should do at any arbitrary resolution and aspect ratio.

We simply need someone that actually read books, to craft fantasy versions of fascism, liberal democrats and commies.

Pretty sure Roman empire could be easily reimagined as Modern Fascists, since their symbology is similar and roman empire was something nazis admired.
Maybe add a sparkle of Spartans.

Liberal democrats could be easily done with greeks and athens city states.
Add a bit of revolutionary french and americans, and you get them.

Commies are a bit more dificult to track down without making it super obvious.
Pretty sure it has to be inspired by some asian or african empire.
>>
>what if rome and greece but it's fantasy?!
>>
>>498419157
I suppose. I steal a lot of shit from dark souls. the fire hand thing you see in the beginning is essentially the pyromancy flame from dark souls and I have it set to cast basic fireballs for now. planning to add more spells later.
as for the crabclaw scythe (that's what I'm calling it for now), I remember in dark souls 3 there's these giant crabs that can pick you up and throw you around so I'm adding that but instead I pick up enemies and throw them at other enemies for damage and knockback. yesterday I showed a scythe I can throw that spins, deals damage and returns to my hand. yoinked that from darksiders 2 aswell...

I think at this point any game mechanic anyone can think of is very likely to have been done already by someone else even if you don't intend to copy it.

Last generation graphics APIs are nice since you can just assume everyone has the full feature set at this point, whereas with something like DirectX 12 you either have to use the most basic feature set or query for everything and make your code pointlessly complex.

The main point of DX12 is to remove CPU bottlenecks and keep the GPU fully saturated with work. So basically you're going to see massive performance losses or gains depending on your GPU.
>>
>>498420991
apparently it makes frame-pacing worse so yeah, it less "smooth". but I was just referring to conventional fps. in any game that offers DX12 and DX11 the latter will run faster by any metric. I have yet to see one game where DX12 runs better and that isn't a meme tech demo like ashes of the benchmark. and in games that offer DX12 and Vulkan the latter is faster. so DX12 is just always the inferior option - again with the exception of meme tech demo shit.

>having trouble with trees
Trees are only a problem if you want those fancy dynamically-generated-biologically-accurate-each-one-unique ones.
If you use a standard-ass static mesh (like WoW, C&C Generals, DoW, ...) you can have thousands of them for cheap.
Not that the 90° quad technique is bad, just saying most toasters nowadays don't need to optimize this hard on tree/bush/etc cost.

probably just draw calls, not the actual polycount. are your materials optimized? do you use GPU instancing whenever you can? do you combine meshes at all?

the supposed optimizations of DX12 sound to me like the supposed optimization of Nanite. it will increase performance IF you didn't do any optimization whatsoever.

40k NPCs on screen (well, a little bit less since parts of the blue and red armies are out of frustum), 13 SetPasses & 21 Batches (3 of those being the skybox&terrain).
If I disable/attenuate LOD, framerate become nearly linear with polycount.
I know people swear with draw calls, but if you get those low enough than raw amount vertex does become your bottleneck.
Then again maybe I'm doing something wrong, dunno.

>are your materials optimized?
That, they aren't. Well they *are*, but since I'm doing vertex animation they are still expensive to display.
>do you use GPU instancing whenever you can?
I use instancing pretty much exclusively. The only regular meshrenderer here are the terrain and skybox, everything else is drawn with large batch rendering orders.
>do you combine meshes at all?
Each soldier here has 3 meshes: body, hair, weapon. Sometime two more if they wear glasses and/or have an accessory (for now, only a flower).
I could probably combine the body/hair/weapon, but then that would make many more smaller batches instead of a few super-large ones, pretty sure it would decrease performances.

I'm not sure I understand the question. Why would that cause issues?
Fusing submeshes and atlasing textures is a pretty standard optimization.

>>498427218
Ironically pure coincidence. That battle run between 40 and 70fps (in the editor) depending on how much shit is currently on screen.

>>498427347
Regular 3D display take an object in your scene, send its mesh, send its material/texture/position, tell the GPU to draw that. Repeat for each object.
Batched drawing / GPU instancing first try to group objects if they have data in common (be it meshes, materials or textures) and send those common data *once* per group.

>Without batched rendering:
You have 5000 ultra-high-poly Pepe models. You send that fat mesh 5000 times to the GPU, clogging everything like hell.
>With batched rendering:
You have 5000 ultra-high-poly Pepe models. You send that fat mesh *once* and afterward just send 5000 different position indicating where it should be placed. Both your CPU and GPU are happy because they didn't waste ages on data transfer.

NTA but not really. Modern liberalism emerged from English common law. That does have some Greco-Roman influences since the main way to get an education for a thousand years in the west was to learn Latin. Then when you learn Latin you would read the great Roman orators like Cicero, who was also responsible for translating a lot of Greek philosophy.

But no Plato's Republic is a retarded political fan fiction and you probably haven't read it if you think our current political structures resemble it, since we don't have philosopher kings. The only philosopher king to exist was Marcus Aurelius and he was a beta getting cucked by a gladiator while coping and seething about it.

The foundation of our current political paradigm is English liberalism codified by the likes of Hobbes and Locke, and unfortunately also French liberalism with idiots such as Rousseau. If you ever wonder why the leftoids always side with criminals like George Floyd and seem to think that they're victims of society rather than being responsible for their own actions, they're following his philosophy. Truly the French always were a blight on the Earth and I should make a game about eradicating them.

The English had just lost the colonies in the American revolution and feared their own monarchy would be next, so no I don't think the English were friends of revolutionary France.

Also it's worth noting that in the 1500s, long before the revolution, the French once tried to prosecute rats in court for eating crops. The rat lawyer (a human albeit french) said that the rats couldn't come to court to face trial due to there being too many cats thus making them fear for their lives. The rats were acquitted. So the French were already retarded and insane and so their retarded and insane philosophies can't entirely be laid at the feet of the eternal Anglo.

if the final product makes it easy for you to make maps then spend all the time you need on it

making maps will be a huge part of most games and making that process easier on yourself is a huge boon

This game's gonna make it. Not only because of the pear shaped waifu but also this >>498441016
It reminds me of a very old sidescroller game for DOS that I can't remember.

When someone says make a game YOU want to play, it means something that you not only enjoy playing but also something that you personally would see on the steam store if it wasn't your game and go "Hey, that looks fun."
Find your audience, market accordingly.

There's the slim possibility that you actually have a mental defect and enjoy something that no other human on the planet does, in which case you should definitely give up and kys

This game would literally go viral if you just rebranded it as an E for Everyone game.
Coomer slop just makes it repusive to non coomers, sorry. It's alienating.

Doesn't help it that the coomer aspect is plain unappealing.

Valve forces me to market it as +18 even if it has zero nudity. I know I'm shooting myself on the foot and even debated a lot in the past. I have some old sprites that I submited on DD51 but people said waifu was better.

I think if you make an r18 version, you could probably host it on dlsite for double revenue
