I'm going to tell you something from personal experience: 2 looks like shit when you have long sprawling connected dungeons with doors between rooms that can be opened.

Making an rpg as a solo dev. Only can work on weekends. Family bothers me on weekends asking for help. Burnt out working 40 hours mon-fri and then 20 more on weekends, plus dealing with family. I must be doing something wrong on why i spend most of my day either jacking off or scroll youtube right? Nothing excites me anymore.

I spent the last 5 years doing my entire compsci degree at home thanks to covid and I graduated with only 2.9 GPA and can't code for shit

I can't make projects on my own and I'm always glued to tutorials after tutorials. Like, what's the point? I'm only lying to myself and potential employer. Okay, i can spend the day practicing leetcode, then what? I don't even want to apply for jobs anymore. I tell myself that I'm happier making games on unity but again, i can't make anything without looking at a tutorial. I just want to do something other than looking at porn and taking naps, and having hard time sleeping at night because things keeps piling up for the other day. I either do chores around the house or jack off to chatbots, that's it. I can't even make myself to draw some pixel art to supposedly try to relax.

I don't exactly want a job. I did a 12 months of unpaid internship with 4 hours of commute back in 2023 and I don't want to do that shit anymore. I just want to find an income and move out, and the only source I have at the moment is localizing indie games to Indonesian for free. I'm tired of being a pushover living with my family, I do errands for my younger siblings, or delivering messages between my divorced parents. isn't that fucking pathetic?

For people wondering how to get off the tutorial tit though, just use chatgpt to help plan new systems. At first chat will help so much you'll be happy with it, but in time you'll become faster at most things without chatgpt and a real dev. You can still go back for hard cases or some ideas, but for most things it's easier to just program on your own.

For one I didn't reach out to a publisher thats not my style, they reached out to me because they are famous for publishing a lot of japanese games and thought my game was kino.

For two; they rejected working with me in the end because I didnt want to sign a contract where I get 0 funding to work on the game because I needed to escape wageslavery and work on gamedev full-time but they wanted bokube for free and sequel rights too so I'd be forced to work on bokube 2 instead of doing anything new and give them both games for free.

the designs are meant to showcase a lot of what I learned those days, There's a letterbox, safe margins, gradient polka dots, plaid pattern, agycole pattern, stripped graddients, a flor de liz, a chinese patterns, four platonic solids, a medieval scroll with sun and moon, a leaf spiral, a flower of life, squaring the circle, a pentagram, a japanese amulet symbol, a cross and a martir cross.

I did not use reference, because it was the remake of a 2012 drawing.
the face is a shaft angle, but I was using the old drawing as reference to draw.

But your main target audience is going to be those with nostalgia (or borrowed nostalgia) for Tricky, which also has a stiff character controller.

My RTS ideas were more of an RTT similar to the Sudden Strike games or Total War where battles have a fixed amount of material determined prior to the map being instanced.

I’m not a fan of jiggly glidy behaviour myself, I have it all built very dumb and rigidly in my engine, there’s tiles and units occupy them. The graphics layer makes it appear a bit smoother. Megaloot had a good idea but I think it needed more time in the oven. Sounds like they took a nerf approach instead of a buff approach which was definitely a mistake. I played in launch and after a few runs getting wiped just shy of floor 30 I lost interest. Yes. Very hard. The effectiveness of a story goes down the longer and more replayable you make your game, and the more story focused you make your game the shorter and less replayable it will become. It's an inevitable trade-off.

Of all the starter packs the spawner seems strongest, definitely, the dams multiply each other. Playing without spawns leads to balls often doing nothing much several times in a row.

The problem is the game expects you to keep multiplying but a lot of the triggers are just flat and gradual increases, and if they aren't, they need more balls to reliably work.

I mostly said that because at one point I added a shop, only to remove it sometime after. I might add it back in some day but the focus of my game was never about micromanaging that sort of thing. For now, I have a simpler system where if a player does well enough in an area they'll get a choice of items, not just an arbitrary money increase but they have to hit a certain threshhold of enemies defeated.

It's generally a good idea to add risk/reward systems for depth.
In this sense stores are usually low risk, low reward.
TBoI is a good example of this. Store items are rarely too impactful but it's a good way to get an extra pickup. Also, you can blow up the shopkeeper or donate money to increase deal chances after defeating the boss. It's almost like the point of the store if anything but.

Sure.
It picks from a random assortment of static meshes, or empty "caves" (here is one such in the video). Then fills the cave in with a random 'sub-level', which is just another mesh with a handful of objects that are all together as one object. After that it samples from pre-selected spots in the cave that I placed to not overlap with any of the sub-levels meshes and rolls for a chance to fill it in or not fill it in with details to create a random assortment of rocks/crystals/stalagtites to hopefully create a decent looking unique version of that cave.

There's a lot of fine tuning I need to do to make everything look good still but its a decent start and for a while I was having fun just running through and seeing the different variations that popped up. I need to rework the sub-levels so that each one distinctly changes the path to the 'exit' door which leads to another cave.

The 'master cave controller' just randomly selects from a variety of caves, some with sublevels and some without, and places the newest one at the 'exit' point marked in the actor blueprint.

Now I don't have to remesh the entire chunk window in order to generate chunks, I only generate the chunks which need to be generated at that precise moment.

Pay attention to the colored chunks lined up, they recur because it is in a ring buffer now.
