Wish it wasnt the case so this oversaturation finally came to an end and these people would leave gamedev. Go back to drop shipping, harping on how they love exercising, or trading stocks or some other foty scheme that gets popular on social media that they pile onto. Sadly gamedev seems to be the last one with no new scheme which means it's probably getting an unsually higher amount of people pouring in compared to previous popular grifts.

Posting here has a very low overhead for me so I like doing it. I want to start posting on other places too, but in addition to here rather than as a replacement.
I was going to start posting on Twitter but I'm not sure I will do it anymore because I don't like the direction that website went, or at least I won't do it as a "main" place like I intended but maybe just a another marketing channel.
Maybe Mastodon would be a good idea, or something else. Having something I could control and host myself would seem like the best option if I can do it without too much overhead.

What does Unity mean when they say you can only make up to $100,000 on the free platform before you need to buy a Pro licence?

i was unsure about the price but i think its fitting
the game is fun and all but doesent offer as much as other roguelikes (Story / 1000 Unlockables, etc) = I wouldnt really pay anything above 10 bucks for it, but maybe im just a cheapskate
besides, its a hobby anyways, not trying to make big bucks here

went back through all six of the currently finished/polished/working weapons today and added unlockable upgrades for each weapon

some of these resulted in a net downgrade to the base weapon, while others resulted in a net upgrade to the total effectiveness of the base weapon

we received complaints 2 or 3 times (might have just been the same person multiple times, idonno) talking about how default bullets moving slower than the player ship felt bad sometimes. we generally agreed with this feedback and the bullet speed for this weapon is now faster to begin with and can be upgraded two more times

>machine guns
the previously-infinite machine gun has been downgraded to a ten-round magazine at tier 1, with a tier 2 upgrade to thirty-round-magazines and a tier 3 upgrade to restore the infinite ammo

>lasers
pic related. lasers can be upgraded to bounce off of terrain up to two times now

>flak
the two upgrades for flak double its surface coverage and half its cost respectively. despite being somewhat unwieldy, this is one of the most cost-efficient weapons in the game now, and having a flak gunbuddy along for the ride is a lot of help

>rockets
rockets got nerfed slightly. you now need to upgrade them to get the additional 8 plasma shots that burst out of the initial explosion radius

>schizo cannon
the first upgrade doubles how many you fire per shot. the second upgrade bestows the same bipolar properties to your gunbuddies

part of this process also involved getting into the code that handles firing rates, magazine sizes, and reload rates for the gunbuddies to make them differentiate between a reload cooldown and a per-shot cooldown, where previously it was just a uniform cooldown for all weapons based on the shot cooldown.

all of these upgrades have been implemented as shop items that the player can purchase with their extra earned credits

the next weapon on the todo list is a weird vampire gun to restore fuel

All unity games have spyware, they have very detailed information of where players got their game, how many hours they play and in which parts of the game they spend most of their time, among many other things. Not sure how accurate it is, I'm guesing it's one of the many tools they use to check on their users.

Posting this screenshot showing how enemies will now stare at the player if a path cannot be made. Also fixed a bug where sparks would spawn in addition to blood when it should just be blood.
Right now I'm fixing up the cutscene camera system so I can begin adding cutscenes.

thanks, the fps drop is mostly from obs being weird

several people have commented on the lack of parallax backgrounds which were present in the trailer (they are WIP for this particular biome and not ready yet) and I think people will be excited to see how these caves look once we start punching holes in the BG tiles to reveal the parallax behind it

in the meantime it's funny to laugh at retards who think that the in-progress videos are the final product

I would recommend changing the gem pick up to be less linear. Let them accelerate to a greater max speed and give them a sense of angular momentum. I'd find an example but I'm sure you know what I mean.

I specifically added a feature where the enemies will decide whether or not to heckle you.
You have no idea how proud I am of this new enemy intelligence system. Like, the Bulldogs, the most basic enemies, actually have room temperature IQs; compare that to Impulsehazard where the Nebulaq Captains, said to be trained as the best of the best of the Nebulaq army of terrorists, simply run to a random location, crouch, and fire their plasma guns if a raycast for sight continues to hit the player before doing that loop all over again.
All I need to do is copy-paste this system for all other enemies with similar behaviors (Saberwolves, Trollglodytes, etc.)

I already changed up the designs a bit from how they used to look: for example, the Basileus of Frydar Island's red tunic is now more matte and there are small bits on the side where his legs are, which was a design element I wanted since I first painted the concept art. However, I've come across information suggesting that texturing and painting in Blender might pose challenges when importing items into UE due to differences in how Blender and UE handle these aspects. I bought a base model few days ago to learn how to make coomer art. I've done a few shape keys that I can't post since they're all boob and now I'm playing with the textures to make a redhead, green eyes with freckles character. This is art for the dueling detective game I was ideaguyying yesterday. It's pretty simple art style where there's no shader, just the texture so adding the clothes (hat, belt, gun etc) will just be retexturing from Krtia onto free models with similar poly counts and I'll see if it matches the style.

Like how you can't sell a standard topdown shooter it needs to be a roguelite or bullet heaven. There's youtube channels that do blender shorts. I think those could be good for learning the tools. Watch one and then put it to practice. Though I suppose the problem you might have is that they probably won't be sorted in any sort of useful manner so you'll have to look for the shorts that are appropriate for your learning level. Anyways learning the basic tools and hotkeys will go a long way. It makes it so much smoother to work with when you don't have to search for every little thing you want to do.

Yes, it is. It's my first game, well it's basically kinda a tech demo and a very primitive version of what the current ROLLING BALL GAME is. I did post it here during development but I doubt anyone really remembers it now. ROLLING BALL GAME DX started development as an enhanced version/remaster but now it's basically a full sequel that contains remastered versions of the levels from the first game.

Hello! I've finally started making progress again, but most of it isn't worth showing off.
Since I last posted 7425 years ago I've been working on improving a load of old stuff. I am going over ever area in the game, making them more interesting, fixing up stuff, replacing placeholders and so on.
This is very in depth though, and yesterday for example I spent maybe 2 hours on one enemy, changing it's animations, fixing sound effects, fixing it's behaviour and even adjusting the shaders some of it's particle effects used and so on and so on. But once that enemy is completely done it'll never need touching again.
I am doing this with everything and every area in the game so the only thing left to do is writing which I hate.

Here is an example of what is being changed. It's a fucking seagull, left is old, right is new. The old one, like a lot of enemies in the game was just a placeholder while the right one is probably how the finished enemy will look. (Not to scale just so you can actually see it)

Took a break from working in Unity and Models to consciously play SM64+SMS, The Big Catch Tacklebox, Pseudoregalia, since they're the only things I've been able to find in the genre(s) that actually control nicely. It's been surprising to notice small details and nuances about movement or mechanics I didn't notice about these in past playthroughs before I started trying to build something.
It's going to be interesting coding and animating various movement states.

My workflow for art is usually I'll moodboard something usually with images I find online or napkin/thumbnail sketches, then I'll try using AI to quickly mock up a few things using some prompts I found that work, aaaand if that works out I start sketching stuff in my own style loosely inspired by the first two parts in this starting with a naked model sheet so I can put whatever clothes/hair/markings/tattoos on the character as needed in layers in Clip Studio Paint.

While I don't personally do this (because I suck at painting), I hear that starting with silhouettes and shadows works really well and I've seen the technique used by Bethesda's concept artists (picrel) to good effect (and some artists I look up to). I always start with a rough pencil or pen sketch either traditionally or digitally, then I color over the layers with a multiply layer. These usually take a day or two if I'm on ADHD pills, or three-seven days depending on how busy I am or how distracted I am otherwise.

For 3D models all I can suggest is a very rough block out at an N64-level. While I /can/ model mid-poly PS2 era stuff, I prefer working with fifth gen N64-style graphics at a /slightly/ higher polycount. If you really want a quick and dirty trick I've seen with games of the era or modern indies aping the style is to basically model the legs, arms, body, and head as basically separate objects instead of a single model. A model usually takes me a day to a week depending on some factors and because I obsess over topology being correct. Textures are usually just rough handpaints early on using Blender's in-built function, and later I'll do them properly in Z-brush at a fairly low resolution. This keeps things quick and takes less than a couple days at most to do.

Sort of. Nowadays on Steam you gotta focus on getting the demo out and using it to build hype. But to have a demo out it should be playable and reasonably polished. If your demo is good it will get picked up by streamers and they will push more traffic into your game's page on Steam. You gotta do that to get the wishlists and once your wishlists are high you participate in a next fest and then get ready for launch. Going through that process will take like 3 to 6 months. I don't think you can build enough wishlists in under 3 months unless your game goes massively viral. And releasing a game on Steam without tens of thousands of wishlists is just stupid. Without them it won't gain any traction on release and will get buried by the flood of shit that's the new releases section.
