Also, you can just make a couple different stair assets and copy and paste them instead, which would take approximately 2 seconds per staircase times however many staircases you would need for an entire game... 15 maybe? So yeah, 30 seconds or one hour (according to your numbers) or in other words, exactly 1/7,200 the time spent.

>>499720863I only played his game because he kept telling me to play it and use it as a reference for how he wants the systems to be done, except after spending a few minutes with it, it was very clear that the systems were poorly structured and is likely the reason why he hadn't made further progress with the game for a year. For example, his entire game was just a series of Godot scenes. He had save/load buttons, but they didn't work. He probably tried something to serialize the entire scene tree and load/save that, but that's unstable and takes a bit of know-how with configuring owners to make work. He need to do a full refactor of how his scenes are constructed. Since both his game and the collab game depended on things like destructible terrain objects and player base-building, the right way to structure them would be for there to be a serializable data structure (e.g. Godot Resource or JSON) that held either data of where all terrain objects and/or what terrain objects have been destroyed, and instead of directly loading objects from a scene file, scene files need to contain loaders that read that serialized data to dynamically place terrain objects. Core design decisions like that need to be made early on, since they a have cascading implications for how the rest of the systems work.

>>499722365>>499722371There are two crimes that get you on the hit list:1. Pretending to care about ALL the devs while actively ignoring some games and never ever talking about them or streaming them or etc. Obviously it's not possible to care about ALL the devs, so pretending to do that is two-faced slimy behaviour. I have been ignored for my entire participation here so I can speak from experience. Osur and horbror are both guilty of this.2. Inner Circle denialism. The other depraved gaslighting routine that some people here like to do is try to pretend that it's not true that there are a select number of games that have reached local microceleb status and benefit immensely from it within the /agdg/ microcosm. They also love to deny the fact that game quality does not correlate in any way with the level of popularity. Lying that good games are the games that get popular here is an evil lie that exists only to prop up an unelected elite. Osur and a long line of other devs are guilty of this. It's the willingness to lie so openly about all of this that is so disgusting about all of this. It's very womanlike behaviour, and knowing it comes from men it makes it even more horrible.
>>499718220These threads have been bad lately.I've been really demotivated recently. I haven't made significant progress for 2 weeks. I sit down every day to do something, but I'm not ticking off tasks. I'm in the process of rewriting this shield controller to improve optimisation. Base shields in my game only absorb beam weapons, so I had to write a whole collision layer system to match up shield doctrines, shield penetration on weapons and shield collisions. I have two kinds of shields, omnishields, that surround the ship and absorb energy weapons and deflectors, which only cover a small sector, but can deflect physical objects as well (you could probably also use it for ramming). The system points for the ship is fundamentally different from the armaments, as multiple armaments can be added, whereas systems all need to be unique (can't have two shields, or two armour). I made this design decision partly due to technical limitations of adding layering shields and so on, but now thinking about it, this system makes more sense from a game balance perspective as well. I have added mods to shields to change their behaviour or functionality, but this is the current implementation of the system. I've got 18 systems planned for the demo ranging from shields, deflectors, cloak, armour, batteries, sensors and so on. This should give players some range as to what to fit to their ship. The frigate (in the video) has 4 system slots, so their is a range of choices for defence. I'm still working out the action system for shields, because its difficult to come up with different actions aside from 'activate'. Might try some sort of synergy system where shield actions can affect other modules.

>>499725334It's not that kind of game. Maximum amount of enemies is probably around 5 or 6. It's closer to FTL: Faster than Light than anything else. I recently read an article with a quantitative definition of fun, linking it closely to flow state. Flow state is when a person is at the optimal point of their skill vs the challenge of the task they are engaged in. Fun is the average level of flow across all tasks in a session. In an FPS or an action game, fun is generated from action or firefights, where the player is actively engaged in combat. This is why FPS focus on tight, linear game design, to keep players close to the action. In strategic or tactical games, the fun comes from thinking ahead and planning. At its core, my game is less about the combat and more about the decisions that lead up to combat. The fun comes from build optimisation and planning for survival weighing the possible risks versus rewards. 'Fun' features:- PoE style passive skill tree, but with pseudorandom choice- Noita style weapon creation using building blocks to find interesting and optimised combinations- Hades style pseudorandom choice for crew, weapons, modules, passives etc.- FTL style ship building, choosing weapons, modules and crew- FTL style crew management, moving crew around, putting out fires, controlling oxygen / life support- Slay the Spire style risk vs reward node map, hunt elites or go for events?- Asteroids style control using Newtonian physics; use objects to block missiles, push asteroids into enemies, avoid impacts- Homeworld / The expanse style aesthetic and soundFor me at least, it combines all the best features of my favourite games PoE, Noita, Hades, FTL, StS, Homeworld etc.Until all these parts are linked, it's difficult to demonstrate, but demo will be out soon(tm).

the player can choose to ignore the limits of his power or accept the realization of what he is.For example, if the Player makes it to the Mountain of God at the center of the world, he will notice that his powers are not effective there. >>499742393Not that anon BUTWoW's success caused every single other MMO for the next 10 (20?) years to be infected with the same design philosophies, because everyone wanted to rake in money to be the next WoW. The problem being those design philosophies were fine..for a single game, but absolutely boring as the standard for the industry. PvP was greatly casualized, being changed from FFA PvP to Faction vs Faction. A much bigger emphasis was put on the story and quests as the go-to method for leveling up (it was very linear), whereas before level up was more free-form of exploring areas, finding the right one for you and killing shit there while avoiding getting killed by other players. WoW also put a much stronger emphasis on "every player is the main character/hero of his story!" and made it so every class has damage and solo leveling capabilities. Before WoW it was standard for there to be exclusively support classes that just couldn't level up alone. (Some exceptions being Priests/Clerics being able to farm Undead with their holy spells.) This was fine because MMOs were a social thing, partying up was to be expected. Not so much in WoW. WoW also made the "rush to final level and end-game content" more prominent, though it was started in Everquest.Worst of all is that innovation was completely stifled, no game tried to do something different because investors wanted the money guarantee of a game like WoW. Imagine if every single game (EVERY single one) after Minecraft was a voxel crafting game, for some good 10 years at least. You'd get sick of it.UO, Asheron's Call, Shadowbane, Lineage 2, Ragnarok, Dark Age of Camelot, City of Heroes, Silkroad, all of these MMOs were so fucking different from each other, yet after WoW came up all of them became the same flavor of off-brand WoW. Anyway I'm hitting the post limit and this is just morning so I'm still feeling woozy, I could go on but I need to work on my game. Resident MMO autist is signing off now.

And these koreans are small teams who don't know what the fuck they are doing or know much about networking so it was easy to hack the games. But did that matter? NO they still cranked out a shit ton of MMORPG's.
>>499742024>why you hating on me dogAnon, there are 2 layers you need to get through to be successful at gamedev. The 1st layer is getting enough technical expertise to make the game that you want to make. The 2nd layer is spending enough time on the content to make the game fun.I'm sure you will be able to get through the 1st layer just fine with enough effort. But what is the scope for for your gameplay? What is the unique selling point? It's the creative front i worry about. If you have a plan that is manageable then cool. I still don't understand what the core gameplay loop is.

Even games like Pokemon build off the same memes (Elite Four = Shitennou = Four Heavenly Kings).

>>499745139>posting watermarked alpha footagenice nda violation, chud
>>499744252I am building up the atmosphere in the game world then I will show off the gameplay loop. The game world is divided into territories. There is this aspect of capturing territory from goblins and gaining loot for doing so. The idea is to force players together to take on these goblin clans who are numerous in number. As you stay alive longer in the game and get more powerful you attract the attention of the goblin commander, who is always tracking reports/statistics it receives from squads in the field to measure territory ownership. The commander is trying to wipe you out and achieve a steady state w.r.t world territory ownership. It has a frontline it wants to maintain. This is the most basic gameplay loop. It will expand from there. I can add a human npc faction that will spawn alongside player waves. Now suddenly the game has become a MOBA. Is it an MMORPG MOBA? Is it a new genre? I think of it like medium frequency MOBA or long-term MOBA. Its like the baseball of MOBA's. Or maybe cricket is a better comparison. A slow moving match. But then I'm also taking cues from the director system from Left4Dead. Now all these gameplay systems are implemented in CODE but I have to record a footage of an actual match in session and not freeplay. I will do that soon. NOW EVEN ALL THAT withstanding. What is the unique selling point? Well you can just go to the website and fucking play the game if there is a server in your region. Thats it. No sign up. You can check it out for 30 seconds and then disconnect before you even spawn but HEY atleast I got your attention. And when is the last time you saw a browser game with SCALE? Many networked players and enemies? I want this spectacle. And even if you get bored, you can check back in a few weeks or months.

another day of a little progress.feeling way more calm since i'm sticking to only one project and since i'm more consistent.i don't have to build rome in a day anymore starting with new ideas. i just stick to one and built upon my progress over and over. it removes the time pressure, since it's a marathon now and not a sprint anymore.i have the most pressure when i start with something new since i see a mountain of work ahead of me.right now i only focus on the next small step.only time you really should start a new project is when you finished the current one.

If you're a zoomer who doesn't know anything more than WoW and FF then don't bother replying to me. Go and play 3 random MMOs from 2024 and 3 random MMOs from 2004 and see the difference between them before you talk. >>499746206Yeahhhh, mmorpgs are pretty much dead. I used to be super into them back in the day, spend all day every day playing them. The main thing mmos had for them back in the day was that they were one of the only places to communicate with other people from around the world. Now that that's easy, it's just not as appealing. Everything is min maxed to the teeth nowadays and you're an asshole if you don't know how to do everything perfectly because you're wasting other people's time. I hope someday there is a new good old school mmo, but I highly doubt it. It will take something completely new I think to bring the genre back to its glory days.

>>499746206I bet I've clocked more hours into MMOs than you have. MMOs converged on the WoW "theme park" formula because players enjoyed that the most. MMOs that try to do something different end up flopping and dying. Look at FFXIV. They tried to do something different at launch and everyone hated it, so they redid the entire game and converted it into a WoW clone. There are a ton of MMOs that you haven't heard of or played, because they suck, and many suck because they try to do something original.https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EteKvR5PnXQ&list=PLEpisdBgNpvgyQcUgTbqrgQzx_u19Rkkz
>>499746728>>499745034You're both dumb. "Kicked out of my party" trope does not come from any video game whatsoever, it comes from resentment of authors being fired from their jobs or excluded from friend groups in school. t. isekai pro

Vid related is the final locus brightness.>>499728867We are all going to make it.
>>499746983Isekai authors never had jobs, their biggest grievance in life was the time they got kicked out of their dungeon finder group because they were shit at the game.
>>499746932Very few MMO's tried to actually do something original. They took the existing base of WoW and then tried to add some gimick on top of it. But the core world design, combat design, etc is the same. They didn't do anything radically different. so the koreans just kept churning this shit out which makes a bulk of the MMO releases. And all the korean stuff is designed around making money off kids playing in PC cafes. The gameplay is all inherently built off that concept. Now stop arguing about who is the "best most legit" mmo player in the thread.
>>499747059How can that be the case? Not even WoWags enjoy WoW. They're all searching for the next "big MMO".
>>499746932The theme park meme exists because it's easier to develop content as standalone experiences. Infinite horizontal progression is a pipedream, new content has to supersede old content, they can't coexist.
Should I use the same story as my comic?
>>499746932>bet I've clocked more hours into MMOs than you haveNo I really don't think so. Name the MMOs you played the most and at what age you started. I'm not proud of wasting my youth on video games but I'm fairly sure I have you beaten at that.>MMOs converged on the WoW "theme park" formula because players enjoyed that the most. The mainstream, casual audience prefers the theme park formula? Yeah agreed. Of course the majority of people will congregate to the blander, easier game. That holds true for every genre, it's not an issue and never was. >MMOs that try to do something different end up flopping and dying.Wrong. The problem was that for a long time, investors held expectations of their new MMOs reaching WoW numbers. A lot of MMOs wanted to take a slice of WoW's pie, compete with it and take their players, when they should have carved their own niche. It also doesn't help that some retarded subset of the WoW fanbase desperately wanted a "WoW killer" and wanted every MMO to be a better WoW (because of some personal issues they had with it), only to then complain about the game not being that before returning to WoW. There are 1195 ACTIVE Lineage 2 private servers right now. The top 20 servers have a minimum of 50k players each. This is a game from fucking 2004 and this is just L2 because that's what I still play lately, god knows how many MU Online or other servers there are. Obviously there's still a lot of people who want to play something other than the theme park formula, it's just that developers always use WoW's 6 million subscriptions as the target to make a profit, instead of making some cheaper lower poly MMO for 50k players, which could eventually be nurtured into having their million players.
My favorite MMO is Minecraft anarchy servers

>>499747512That's not necessarily true. MapleStory and Runescape circa 2003 to 2007. WoW BC/WotLK 2007 to 2010. I hopped around a few dozen MMOs 2010 to 2017, but I don't think I broke 1k hours in any of those. Maybe 1k+ in Blade and Soul or Skyforge, but barely. I mainly played PoE during this time, if you want to count that as an MMO. OSRS in 2017-2018, FFXIV in 2018, WoW Classic throughout Covid, back to OSRS in 2021-2022.You NEED the mainstream casual audience in your MMO. MMOs are fun to more hardcore players because they are filled with filthy casuals that they pick on.What investors think doesn't really matter as much as what the players think, since MMOs are generally designed to only be fun when it has a large enough player base. If your game requires investors to sustain it after release, it's not a good game. At the end of the day, content is king and a fresh MMO just simply can't compete in terms of content with older MMOs.

>>499769276Again it's like arguing with a blind man how to paint. Wordswordswords in direct conflict with objective reality. You can't tell the difference! THAT's why there's 5x as many pixels in one part of the model compared to the rest.
>>499769232on a technical level its not great but the character design is top notch
>>499769635I don't know what reality you live in.

Indie gamedev is my job. I just need to figure out how to start getting people to pay for my games
>>499769768How do you know?
>>499769873>How do you know?
>>499769841First you have to actually make a game, then you release it in such a way that people can purchase it with money.
>>499769276>low resolution textures = big pixelsyes>big texel size variety = big variety in visible texture pixels = uglyno. you made that up. all the best looking models and games have large varieties in texel size.>high resolution textures = small pixelsyes>+ texture filtering = you can't even see the differenceno. you made that up. all the best looking models and games have large varieties in texel size.
>>499758278>>499756565I fucked up, the earlier keys don't actually give access to the game. Use these instead.Fuck Itch, why would I want to create keys without any access.
I got a headache from how stupid you people are
>>499770001>then you release it in such a way that people can purchase it with money. That's a good idea. I will see if I can learn how to do that then I worry about the game part.
>>499769780ngmi vibes
a dialogue system that doesn't lock options behind requirements, outing you based on player knowledge and not your character's innate traits>hold up thumb/index/middle>hold up index/middle/ring
>>499711560that fucking sucks holy shit

>>499770482when i was in school this shit was week 1 year 1.i think the problem is someone half listens to a beginner tutorial or the takeaway summary of a talk and then they think they know what they are talking about.
