Ian's writing style should've been adjusted for IDW and maybe he did. Trying to apply the same storytelling to a fundamentally different setting and part of franchise is never going to work as well. It needed a radically different approach than trying to make it Archie lite. The games can't really support that kind of story. Ian was right on his old forums that a pure Sega Sonic comic would not come to pass, because his old method didn't fit the games at all. Plenty of great stories in the games verse have been made. Barnes pulled that off with Scrapnik Island too so it can kind of work in a conic book too.
