Isnt it kind of crazy how fast AI went from generating nonsense trash that looks like someone vomited on a canvas in 2021 to AI making 3D models,rigging and animating them and it actually looks fine.
This model was generated,rigged and animated by AI and you could actually use it in your game like it looks fine.(Maybe you could up some texture errors in a few places though)
Only 3 years passed.
Imagine what AI will be able to do in another 3 years from now.

Don't chase trends and don't bank on virility. Yes, there are break-out successes like Vampire Survivors and Lethal company, but you need to understand the context and that it wasn't an over night success.

Zeekerss who created lethal company made mini-games in Roblox for a decade. Lethal Company wasn't a fly-by-night overnight success, it was a decade of trial and error.

Luca Galante of Poncle who created Vampire Survivors worked in the gambling industry coding slot machines for a decade. He took all his knowledge and experience from the gambling industry to make an addictive game.

Matthew Davis and J. Ma from Subset games worked in the game industry professionally for half a decade and it took them two years of full time work to create FTL: Faster than Light.

Mega Crit games is a similar story, Casey Yano and Anthony Giovannetti were working in the software development industry for half a decade doing hobby games on the side, before quitting their jobs and working on Slay the Spire full time for 3 years before release.

Valheim is a similar story. Small team working part time for almost 6 years and developing Valheim's gameplay loop and aesthetic.

Although I haven't published yet, I'm quite similar to many of these developers. Decades of education and experience in the industry, inspired by previous games (FTL, StS, PoE, Noita) and have been working on my game for 3 years full time. Though, being a one man army its probably going to take me 6 years to get to a full release.

Passion, creativity and singular focus will get you a good product, and once you have a good product, customers will come.

im not bsing when i said im making an nsfw game. im loving the process because when i get burnt out i write stories and come up with scenarios. my mind is so horny from all the sexless years that resulted in having a crazy imagination

i need your help though. instead of doing the animations in blender i decided to just use the engines IK system with a bit of code in order to create the ol' in and out. is this a bad idea? it's already starting to get a bit messy trying to come up with something that saves all the transforms and changes that i do across multiple objects in play mode. it's really nice having everything previewed immediately in engine though. the customization is incredible though i can have one hand grab a tree rotate the body..the possibilities are endless.

I started testing movement for my turnbased tactics project. The easier part was figuring out what an AI should do in a given turn- if you're familiar with something like Utility AI. For me, the harder point is figuring out where an enemy should move after they decided on what to do.

hello frens, I'm new. Two weeks into this project. No engine, all self-written C++ and OpenGL. Idea is to simulate a simplified galactic economy. Currently there are ~100 systems. There are a couple of resources, each of them either being in demand or being produced by the systems. Ships transfer the items between them. The economic model is pretty simple right now and pretty unstable. In particular systems keep spending money they don't have.
I want the player to have control over a trading company, eventually buying more ships, taking on riskier cargo etc. And maybe influence a galactic war. Good idea?

I hope to get the economic simulation stable and add more depth. I just found the idea cool to play out the logistics behind the grand 4X games. Each time you skip dialogue the HP and ATK of all enemies permanently goes up by 1% so you need to carefully read each line of dialogue or else you will be playing on nightmare mode
There will also be quizzes about stuff said 5 hours ago so unless you memorized every line you will be getting permanent debuffs for each wrong answer.

Software engineer. Honestly the company isnt what it was anymore, and I could see this layoff coming for months now. Assuming you're talking about a 3D humanoid character controller (the only one that matters), Unreal has the best character controllers by far. ALS Community, or you can copy the Lyra blueprint. In Unity, you have to pay for an asset. Godot doesn't any decent ones. You have to write your own. Baby's first move_and_slide is not a character controller.

Minigames are fine if they're a time/resource limited part of the main game and contributes to it somehow, like a fishing minigame where you need limited bait for example so it can never take over the player's attention.
Bad minigames are things like arcade machines just thrown in somewhere to distract you and add nothing to the game and just ruin the pacing, spooky's jumpscare mansion is guilty of that.

After about an eternity, finally got all the town buildings and foliage complete.
The town grows as you progress through the game, starting from a shitty little shanty and eventually becoming pic related.
Each little burg has a separate spawner and has ~ 7 levels each, for a total of 63 building layouts! A few of them still need a prop pass, but that takes maybe 15 minutes. Now on to making building interiors and holiday spawns!

Back around 2014, I worked on an "illustrative line art" renderer. Basically, the underlying engine used constructive geometry primitives, rather than polygon meshes, and drew lines directly in screen space along the contours, similar to how an IRL artist would draw. It's theoretically way more efficient than any shaders for outlines, but in reality, it's just an unnecessary premature optimization. I'm going for layers of complexity here. Instead of selecting a spell or using hot keys or whatever, all spells are cast by putting the right sequence of magic words. Each letter on keyboard will be the first letter of a magic word, putting them in the right combo selects the spell. So you as the player have to actually memorize the spells the way a wizard would.

When you see enemy spellcasters, you will also hear (or see on screen) their magic words as they cast. This lets you predict in real time what they might cast, and if you are maintaining spacing and can put in the spell input quickly you can cast the correct counter (which may be a direct shield or counterspell or may be you knowing how to dodge so you can punish with something else). You also have to manage the different mana pools which forces you to use a large variety of spells. Force example, one force mana can cast force bolt to stun the opponent, but one force mana can also cast force field to protect yourself from physical attacks and stuns. Drawing runes is too imprecise for me, I think that with good design my spell input system can be sustainable for an entire game. First of all, it is not a filter. It is image to image conversion, which takes a lot more work. Filters do not generally produce clean and acceptable results in this field, at least not yet. You go frame by frame, convert them, match them and then choose the ones who are appropriate to create a result. After that there is editing too, for instance, to hide words in the general end product.
The point is the mood and the vibe. It becomes a very distinct artstyle.
