Market your game and gather wishlists. Don't release game if you don't have any wishlists. Don't beg people to wishlist just get your cool game out to people so they wishlist because they want to buy it.

Wishlists act as your measurement of how interested people are in your game. If you can't get to 10k it tells there's something seriously wrong. It could be that the Steam page sucks, the trailer sucks, the demo sucks, your marketing sucks or the visual appeal of the game sucks. If you can't get attention on your game something is wrong but it is up to you to determine what that is.

10k is the bare minimum btw. It doesn't guarantee anything. If you can get to 100k you probably have a decent game on your hands.

Dropping a game on Steam with a couple hundred wishlists is destined for failure.

Publishing on Steam isn't the end point, it's the starting line. There are plenty of hugely successful games that didn't make a profit in their first, second or even third year.

Once you publish, you start pushing out updates and shilling your game to people who might be interested. It's only after you do that solidly for 2 or 3 years that you can accurately gauge your success.

Indie games are fundamentally different from triple As with million dollar marketing budgets. A triple A's success is calculated in the first month, an indies success is calculated in years.

For initial momentum, you need an audience. I think YouTube streamers are probably the most powerful marketing tool you can use for an indie game, but I don't think paying streamers to play it is a wise investment for an indie.

You need to reach out to streamers, share your game and demo, and let it grow organically from there. A huge part of this is having a quality game with a strong hook.

I was under the impression that /agdg/ is sheltered and are releasing games to middling success because they lack visibility.
Turns out plenty of games ARE on twitter already, including marmo, afterlife gladiator, bigguy, aether singularity, yark and others. Now I feel kinda silly.
Bottom line - you need to have twitter personality and post about your game on socials to gather following. Clearly, the more juice your game has, the better your reach will be. Still, you can also be more visible to your niche and reach is pretty important to be successful.

If you're making a roguelite please design the upgrade system such that it can't brick your build. I've been playing way too much NIMRODS lately and it has this problem with the weapon parts being RNG and sometimes you just get shit options that kill whatever build you were going for. Your weapon has specific slots (mag, stock, barrel etc.) and picking one in a slot locks you out from the other options. It would be fine if the game had banishes and rerolls as normal but they use an annoying gimmick for it so you can't rely on it when you get shit options.

The game's a lot of fun but man it annoys the fuck out of me when it just decides no fun allowed.

I think it's a good game compared to other aggy games. It's no Ultrakill but it's still fun.
The issue with demoday and steam reception inconsistency, is that everyone on DD has a compelling reason to actually try out a game on demo day, whereas that's not the case with people on Steam.
A random demo is only competing with 50 others demos on DemoDay whereas on Steam with thousands of other games AND it has a price.

Your game can be "decent fun", but if it doesn't have a "holy shit check this out dude" element, it won't go viral by itself unless you luck out on the Streamer roulette. (i.e. unique setting, coombaiting, incest baiting in the coffin game, multiplayer hook and ERPing in webfishing, etc. )

I do like FPS and TPS but the high speed ones are exhausting to play a bunch. Bullet heavens are the sort of thing I can keep going at for hours and I don't even notice it. I'm big into orblikes and bullet heavens hit a lot of the same notes but the experience is more condensed. Orblikes tend to lose their ADHD magic a bit once levels slow down and you're stuck looking for extremely rare loot while in roguelites that next upgrade is always around the corner.

I just learned that you can bake your render setting into a texture you can use later as normal map or difusse.

And then you can bake, then edit in Krita and save that way, days of work.

Let's take gamedev for example. I started getting into it when I had a fulltime job, then shortly after a wife and kids. So I have very little time. Which means when I want to make something, I want it to be good. Not knowing how to make something means either trying or learning, two things that take additional time. Now there is a chance that it takes too much of that, or I don't understand it immediately or it's not good enough the first try, which gives me some sort of anxiety which is absolutely not necessary, but it is there because I think "How can I handle all that, I will never be able to finish the project"

Also the fact that most of what I do, I really like it first try and if not, it feels like a failure AND "wasted time". I remember when I was a teen and played around with RPG Maker. Just opening projects and trying, playing around with it and learning at the same time. I got so good at it...
Nowadays this feels like a luxury. I need a proper tutorial first, I need to know exactly how it should be, I need to know 100% how it could be done before I even try.

I just started to get comfortable with that fact, when I just sat down and really put together how much time was actually wasted by doing exactly the things above (especially procrastination by searching for the right tutorials or "inspiration"). Would I have just enjoyed the process and played around, would have been curious like I was as a teen or child, it would have been much more productive. So the dream is to be able to make it full time, but on the other hand it's a luxury to have a very good and stable job and a family to spend time with and do this on the side. Enjoy the way and don't only think about the finish line.

It's probably an edited font. What you're probably looking for is a blackletter typeface, not a calligraphy one. Calligraphy is more like cursive.
Find a blackletter font, type out your game's name, then stretch and edit it until it looks the way you want it to. Don't just type the name and leave it as is, that will look like shit. Play with the letter spacing (kerning) at the very least.

I'm going to be brutally honest.

The good part: The gameplay is fun. Maybe that's just my doom nostalgia speaking but it scratches the right itch for me, so well done on that.

The bad part: Some of the levels are too low contrast making it hard on the eyes. Especially the dark blue and dark purple one make it difficult to see shit, even if you increase contrast on your own screen. The light blue level looks much better by comparison. Some of the sound effects seem either too quiet, or don't fit with the visuals, like the minigun sounds like a completely different weapon to me. Lastly, the trailer starts with you being dead on the floor for like the first 10 seconds, by that point most people have already clicked away. To gain peoples attention the trailer should start with the action right away.

don't let the scary symbols and math spook you, they are conceptually simple, i can post my implementation if you would like
for lift you can start with dot product from planeSpeed with planeForward, then sample a lift curve that peaks very early. make the curve dip again if you want stalling. the lift should be proportional to the velocity squared for realism, but of course, you can always go linear and see how it behaves.... my advice is that you read about this stuff instead of banging your head against the wall like I did. should have read all the stuff that TCA wrote, and all the stuff that is on github already

For lift I have:

but the lift is too strong and the plane keeps lifting even when its nose is pitched below horizon. I think if I can make it so that vertical speed can't be positive when the nose is below the horizon then it will be good enough. I want an arcade flight model but I want somewhat realistic landings (so that the player will need to reduce speed and pitch the nose up to land).
I also just learned about trim and I guess I'll need to implement that to make the plane stop lifting when it's flying level except during takeoff.

don't do cos(AOE), sample a curve instead. cos(AOE) returns 1 for 0 angle so you get massive lift when flying straight.
