I've done some work getting good feeling controllers in Unreal. I just don't know what you can't figure out. You should know that a lot of it comes down to animations, though. The capsules aren't very representative of what the player will experience, especially if there are sliding animations. On my last controller I think I just locked the rotation while they were skidding to a halt (in the character movement C++ code,) then flipped the direction and unlocked it once the skidding state finished.

I discovered some bullshit and I have no idea how this happened.
So I this shit run on the server. I have a custom event that is also replicated from the server. This is only for graphics. The main mechanics just work. For some reason, this variable keeps getting replaced by the server. The data being sent in is correct. But for some reason, it just fails to get the data for one fucking thing. Everything else being sent in is perfectly what I want it to be. So why?

I don't know what you've tried. One thing to try would be having different static and kinetic coefficients of friction. When the acceleration of the player model is low, they have have static friction, which is low, and hence can turn quickly. When the acceleration is higher, kinetic friction kicks in, and they start skidding.

I know that but "Moving in the opposite direction makes that speed drop faster." only happens when the player character uses low ground friction.
Low ground friction also causes the player to lose a lot of speed while turning and I don't want that.

Visual languages are the same as framework-specific scripting languages like GDScript or GML. They're very good for doing exactly what they were built for doing, which is calling engine functions. However, once you try to go beyond that, for example implementing complex algorithms, they start to feel clunky because they were never designed for that purpose. code always runs in order, line by line. the first step is to understand what an individual line of code actually does.
experienced programmers interpret code in the same way as a computer. we essentially run the code in our heads, keeping track of variables and stuff with our brains.
theres a big gap between being new to coding and being able to do this on your own. so I highly recommend using a debugger to step through code yourself and watch it happen at human speed.
you can google how to use a debugger in unreal/godot/unity. paste in code from whatever youtube tutorial you are watching, and step through line by line seeing how stuff happens

It's much more complex.

There's multiple materials overlaying, a bumb map set to smooth the low poly edges baked from a high poly mesh, there's 3 materials on that mesh that are very similar with diferent color ramps, there's a scratching screen space texture set to the Y position of the texture.
There's also shit like knife tricks on the topology and edge sharpening tricks on the high poly mesh, instead of it being sculpted.
And there's an inverted hull.

It was a great learning exercise of a bunch of new techniques.

That's what I mean, instead of inferring information from the ID range the item ID falls into, have each Item object in your item library have a category variable and use that. If you can get rid of all the instances of inferring information from the ID itself, you will never have a reason to change IDs in the future.

Anyone here have experience setting up dynamic music like DMC V has? It's something I've always dreamed of having in my game, but the more I think about it the more it seems like a pain in the ass to get working. I'm assuming the easiest way to do it would be to export a song in separate tracks, play them all on mute simultaneously, then have some sort of hidden scoring system that adds the tracks in succession as the score increases.

Did up this "evil" character these past few days for the project revamp, fairly happy with it. Going to be working on the "good" playable character next. I wrote out the entire first 30% of the game this time before even starting on the character, so I know exactly what to expect and how long everything should take to do. I'm hoping by doing this I won't fall into the dreaded "this is too big of a project" feeling that ends up making me quit. It's what I did for Spurdo where I mapped out the entire world before I would even start on it, and I actually finished that game, so I'm hoping that it'll happen here too, as opposed to my last few projects where I would only have a vague idea of what I want, and then try to build on it as I went along. But I just don't think that kind of method works for me.

Yesterday I mastered NPR shaders, and now I just learned what is a curvature map, an AO map, a thickness map, a cavity map, and then using a single rgb value of a normal map.

Here's my plan.
I'll make a general "framework" for the kind of game I want to make. It will include save/load, chargen, combat, dialogue, inventory, all that.
I'll release my first game using the framework at its most basic. If it flops, I'll keep working on the framework and keep adding to it, using new art and new lore.
Essentially I plan to make my own game template and then just keep iterating on it. Or asset flipping it, I guess you could say.
Eventually I'll have a hit. It may take 5 releases, but this way I won't be wasting time trying to make a new game from scratch each time. I'll just keep recycling the framework.
