Progress has to be made in order for the character to work, unless it looks like bashing your head into a wall and that's inevitably gonna wear people down. Even an extremely formulaic show like... "Phineas and Ferb" is the best example I can think of. That is a show that is filled with "character A wants X, but status quo is god" all over the place. And even that show gives satisfactory progression and even conclusions to various characters' "arcs" in spite of every episode largely being the same series of events over and over again.Kid Sidekicks come packaged with a specific driving narrative towards a conclusion they are destined to reach. Denying progression from ever happening is delaying the inevitable, which means delaying the actual story from ever happening, which will frustrate anyone who is immersed in that character.

What's Sonic Gather Battle?

It's a one-sided competition where one guy is trying his absolute hardest to beat the other guy, but the other guy is just casually living his life unaware of how badly the other guy is struggling just to compete with him. And if he is aware, it's always in a passively encourage sense but ultimately just letting the kid do whatever he's doing.

And then Cream is Amy's Tails and is basically just a girl version of Tails, so she can also keep up and fly super fast. And Rouge is Knuckles' rival so she can also keep up with Sonic and Shadow. So I decided to binge watch the movie trilogy yesterday and I have concluded that this general take this franchise way too fucking seriously.Sonic 1 was decent for what it was trying to do, you could tell the staff had a hard time figuring out exactly how they wanted the characters to be portrayed and interact together. It wasn't great but it wasn't bad either.Sonic 2 was genuinely really good, Tails didn't have a lot of time to himself but they nailed Knuckles and his personality. The interactions between him, Sonic and Eggman were fairly believable even with game Knuckles' logic.Sonic 3 was simply kino. There were hiccups here and there (smash cut to Jim spanking himself after and emotional moment) but overall I thoroughly enjoyed it even more than I did Sonic 2. My gripes with the movie mostly revolve around Jim taking up too much time and Shadow acting too much like a kid instead of a being that's been conscious for over 50 years but then again these movies are made for kids to understand and digest primarily.Overall, I think the trilogy is more than serviceable and in fact actually are a good boon for the franchise, a lot better than Archie, IDW, SATAM or AotSth since the previously mentioned are all low budget shit that is meant more to sell toys and comics more than actually tell an engaging and action-packed story.
