When did characterization discourse become the most important discourse to sonic fans? To the point they think the stories are the most defining make or break factor for sonic games?Back then, it was always about gameplay and physics and gameplay styles, classic vs modern, etc. It's very weird as an older sonic fan see newer gen fans resort to using the same insults journalists back then would use against the series. It's also bizarre to see newer gen fans use the scores of the dark age games as proof the concepts can not work. Almost a decade ago, it was agreed that it was not the concepts but the execution. Those games weren't bad because of the stories or characterizations necessarily but rather, Sega was notorious for rushing games out and leaving them very unpolished in all departments plus lackluster presentation terms of graphical and sometimes animation quality. If any of the dark age era games got the amount of money and polish the newer games like Shadow gens and crossworlds are getting, I think they'd be a success much like these games. It's always been down to execution and polish, not story because the broader general gaming audience doesn't care too hard about sonic lore like the autists of this fandom.

The problem with IDW is really that Ian openly did not want it to be canon in the first place and the canonicity was dropped in his lap long after he was trying to make it a new incarnation of Sonic. You probably noticed by now that people are cool with movienic for now, but if he was implied to be the canon origin story of Sonic, there would be riots.It reminds me of how the last Tomb Raider game had an ending that implied that the 2010s Tomb Raider games were a prequel to the 90s Tomb Raider games and they patched it out.
