The modern ideas of heaven and hell aren't really biblical. Sheol which is just the Jewish underworld where all the dead go, is translated as hell. Then the lake of fire is described as the second death. It's annihilation. And the Kingdom of Heaven is described as coming on earth. Jesus was killed before the kingdom came and he had a chance to rule. Of course the response to that is the second coming and the revelation prophecy. It has been 2000+ years though, and according to the actual biblical text all those dead people are just awaiting revival in the kingdom that has yet to be realized.And the Gnostic traditions belived in reincarnation. So there are Christian sects that more closely align with eastern ideas. I personally think reincarnation makes more sense than just waiting for 2000+ years.
