I'm a pretty big Sci-Fi fan, though you don't need to be into Sci-Fi to be familiar with what an "Alternate Universe" is. The literary trope goes that there exists other "realities" that may or may not be slightly (or extremely) different than our own, with the protagonist often "returning home", wherever that may be, with new found perspective and wisdom. There are varying degrees to which this appears in media - perhaps the protagonist switches bodies with a minor antagonist, in order to grow as an individual and defeat the Big Bad Guy. Or perhaps something more akin to inter-dimensional swaps, where multiple "universes" exist though differing to varying degrees.Well, I've developed the habit of running "thought experiments" in my head when I'm bored. Essentially setting up scenarios and running through them imagining different ways they might play out. I often imagine the above scenario, but I'm making contact with Aliens and I need to communicate important aspects of Human society and knowledge. As you can imagine, it can lead down some interesting trails of thought (check out the Voyager Golden Record, it's an interesting solution).Eventually I arrived at the general scenario of dying and being greeted by some ethereal presence inquiring "So what happened...?". It's a daunting question, of which where to begin is almost impossible to choose. No matter the when or the where you pick to begin from, explanations logically only produce more questions to be asked in the imagined inquisition. I feel like it's a fun, but also powerful, tool for putting existence into perspective. In example, "Well, first I was born..." Okay, what is "born"? And just continue ad nauseam.Also, "fractals". It's less about "what" repeats and more about "how" it repeats.
