I hope not. I'm 5'7 so I really need that shit.
I heard a rumor that is related to the somewhat diminished Russian (and surrounding nations) presence in Judo do to the war and whatnot. The japs and the frenchies no longer feel threatened by them so naturally the wrestling side of judo is up for grabs, "olympically" speaking

Anyone here know anything about the judo scene in Los Angeles? Which schools are both competent and injury-averse? I'm trying to talk my friend into training so he'll be more fun to throw around on holidays but he's getting old and has some injuries from other physical activities.
>>
>>216085
In my experience pain comes from wanting to win
Only retards push an old man ton his limit
If your friend prioritizes landing safely he's safe
Also avoid ukeing for tai otoshi
But always be uke
>>
>>216087
>In my experience pain comes from wanting to win
>Only retards push an old man ton his limit
A novice has very few tools to assess that and sometimes old men need to be told to not push themselves to their old limits anymore.
>>
>>216115
>A novice has very few tools to assess that
my instructors push grips and breakfalls hard and it works for me
i have other hobbies as well so i prioritize falling safely to the detriment to my ability to grapple effectively
>>
>>216087
pain comes from the dumbass that trains 5x a week but still has shit randori and wins through pure strength and boderline tackling and stiff arming you
>>
>>216085
if it's a good school the injury rate should be low and horror stories should be almost non existent. ALMOST

I still blame the cobra kai win at all costs mentality

>>216151
On the other hand the obese guy at my gym often fucks himself up, all I have to do is survive and 3 minutes later he looks like he was waterboarded while wrestling with a python in a hotbox in peak summer

which is the most essential part of the warm up to get you actually warm for doing judo

I've seen more people get taken out from doing somersaults and neck bridges than in actual judo accidents, and the judo accidents that do occur are from uncontrolled crashing body weight which is going to blow your shit out no matter how warmed up you are

Hell I've seen at least 2 occasions where someone goes down because their foot got caught between the seam of the mats during the laps 30 seconds into class

>>
>>217291
I'm personally anti-instructional because I don't see the value in them for the time spent let alone if people actually pay for them on top of that

if there's any instructional I'm interested in it's likely just a specific section which I'll watch one time at 2x speed and catch the gist of it "oh that's pretty cool" and that's it. People trying to actually learn large amounts of material from them are in a rough spot

these are the only belts I wear now, best in the business if you ask me

Judo 2025 rule updates are out. Some notable changes:

>yuko is back but only for newaza
>bear hugs are legal as long as you don't fully clasp your hands together
>"Positive activity in ne-waza will be taken in consideration" whatever that means
>gripping inside the sleeves is legal, gripping inside the trousers is legal in newaza
>use of head to throw and defend is allowed (outside of cadets)
>korean seoi is legal again (outside of cadets)
>leg grabs are NOT back (but you can grip the belt and skirt from below as long as you don't stall)

>>
>>217814
The only kyokushin place I can attend is a weekly 3h long saturday class because it's a 1h travel.
Shotokan I would be able to train 2x 2h classes a week.
Or I can just train muay thai but I wanted something without boxing gloves and there are no mma classes here.

If this is for self defense proper muay thai mogs the fuck out of shotokan, at least for an adult hobby practitioner

>>217847
Yes. It's for self defense and buying a gun/knife is not an option in my country.
Maybe I should just train muay thai like you said bacause it has classes everyday. Elbows and knees are nice to have.
>>
>>217813
>>217848
From a historical perspective, yes. Jigoro Kano and Gichin Funakoshi were close friends. From a practical standpoint, you're more likely to find a good muay thai school than shotokan school.
>>
>>217776
skill issue
>>
>>217831
Basically every Karate guy that can actually fight does "kickboxing" at this point. Anyone going out of their way to do some niche sport like kyokushin or lethwei is probably there because they can't hack it in the big pool. Unless you just really like the sport (like American judoka), do the most popular full contact one.

>>217847
I would honestly TKD over Shotokan at this point. Even if the rules are weird in the grand scheme of kickboxing, at least the focus on Olympic competition means you're actually practicing landing body and head kicks against a moving target. Shotokan ime is much more about the kata and athletic demonstration aspects than punching and kicking an uncooperative opponent.

It's a hobby for me and I have a stand up job with delicate finger tasks

Single legs are allowed in sambo and stuff like that still happens. Sumi gaeshi can be a single leg counter on its own.

And if you want to act like it's something that would only happen because of the jacket and wouldn't work no-gi, it works in wrestling too.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tZIJ7FPiGgQ
>>
>>218304
Holy shit, first time I see a sumi gaeshi executed like that, fuckin tuff
>>
>>217793
I wholeheartedly agree with all this. This is something that's bothered me since I started judo, and it's become a sort of elephant in the room. The gap between a textbook throw and its practical, randori version has become too big in some cases. There's too much emphasis on drilling the "right way" not the effective way, which would make Jigoro roll in his grave. Even as you're taught the basic textbook movement, you're basically left on your own to figure out how to execute that throw in an actual fight. Uchi mata is a big case because the standard textbook version is so comically wrong and ineffective. Consequentally the "real" Uchi mata took me years to figure out, as I'm sure its taken others, and that's a sign something's not right in the teaching methods. I haven't trained for months now but last time I did, I was learning more from watching pros and copying them on the mat than from my own teachers. I think overall the way judo is taught needs a reform or else it's going to rot and decay. It needs to self-criticize and adapt instead of adhering to the dogma of textbook throws.

I have man tits and a weak upper body..do you judokas do any gym sessions outside of your judo stuff to make yourself stronger? if so what? dont laugh at me i'll kill myself
>>
>>218403
I work out 8 days a week.
Sunday to Sunday
>>
>>218403
Yeah. My training outside judo is the only thing keeping me from being ragdolled like I was when I started. Just do basic bodybuilding exercises + cardio at the end. The biggest game changer for me was bench press and kegels for ne waza (even though you rarely bench press your oponent in the ground) and squats and abs machine for stand up fighting.
>>
>>218397
It's how the Japs have been training for a long time. Rote learning. Even legends like Kimura were like
>do osotogari a million times against trees and shit
>spam it in matches until it works because your oponent's leg looks like it's been hit by a 2002 honda civic driven by a crackhead.
And this is hearsay but the frenchies have been training like this. Warm up and right into randori. They don't do nearly the amount of uchikomis like the japs.
>>
>>218430
>It's how the Japs have been training for a long time. Rote learning.
That's a western myth kept alive solely through muh exotic orient fetish/racism. The Japanese today train much closer to the way you think the French train; warm up with uchikomis followed by hours of randori. It might've been true back in Kimura's time when the first westerners were starting to seriously get into judo, but they haven't trained that way in decades and you can easily debunk it with a quick browse on Youtube. Hell it was already debunked in the video from the first post of the reply chain.
>>
>>218429
>basic bodybuilding exercises
Any recommendations on what program you follow? I'm thinking of just doing something that involves squats, deads, military press, bench press and pull ups, the basic stuff for a good foundation.
>>
>>218429
>kegels
>>
>>218433
My Japanese sensei learned by a million uchikomis. And he's 25. They also did hours of randori, but I willing to bet the frenchies do a lot more. To settle this we would need more than a video or anecdotes.
But hey I'm not Japanese nor have I trained over there. We would have to actually ask one how are they training right now.
>>218434
Bench press, wrist curls (very important as well), bicep curls, barbell squats, push press, hip thrust (>>218437 I meant something like this you fag, but you get the gist anyhow) and push press with dumbells. That's what *I* do and perhaps not the best for judo, but generally as long as you do the basic stuff you will be fine. The point is to not bother doing the weird shit olympians do in instagram.
>>
>>218441
Seems like a lot of upper body work in general, which makes sense since we're throwing people around...I'll consider that for sure.
>>
>>218403
Yeah I've been lifting to get stronger for judo. I am doing Greyskull LP. It's a basic routine, nothing complicated. What actually cost me was all the bulking and eating. I was a skinny kid most of my life and not used to eating 3k cal a day with lots of protein. Took me some time and effort to adapt (and money). But it pays off.

ehhhh...
>3 sets of heavy squats followed up with 3 more sets of hamstring curls and split squats
>deadlift and rdl day after hamstring curls and low bar squatting
>le deadbugs
>leaving 5 whole reps in the tank

you'd be better of with 7-day full body U/L split, one upper exercise one lower exercise. A few warmup sets followed with a maximum set and maybe, JUST MAYBE some rest-pause sets after.

Judoka aren't powerlifters, GS and SL are powerlifting routines with the vocabulary to show for it. Trust me, you're not gonna be feeling good trying to do osoto drills or uchi mata drills after deadlifting and rdling on the same day with 6 total sets. Given that you actually give intent into 4 separate hard exercises in a one hour frame.

People need to learn to do the throw somehow is the point im trying to make. I started wrestling as a young child and persisted though my time in school. I later got into judo under a high-quality instructor and loved it. Unironic skill issue, on your part and possibly on your instructor's.
>sparring within a few lessons
Scholastic/folkstyle wrestling does not allow high-altitude throws and is designed to avoid injuring student athletes. You can put a new student into wrestling sparring and the risk of serious injury is very low as long as the weights are similar and nobody is too out of shape. In contrast, falling wrong in judo sparring can easily injure you very badly. Some judo schools will allow new students to spar in ne-waza (ground work) before nage-waza (throwing techniques) and some will impose the restriction on ne-waza that there are to be no chokes or joint locks with new students, only pins, making it much more similar to sparring in scholastic wrestling.

the technique that uses as little strength as possible is the one that works though

how many times have you heard "this is the way you do it on a test, but this is how you'll do it in randori"
so why even show the test way if it doesn't work

>maximum efficiency, minimal effort.

No one said learning judo is easy.
All these youtubers that are trying to be influencers and saying uchi komi doesnt work or we should get rid of randori(like what jimmy pedro is saying) should be ignored.
These are all essential elements to learning judo. They're one of the reasons why getting that sweet shiney shodan rank takss 5 years and not 10 like in bjj
like what this fucker in bjj is saying. (>>219036)

bjj isnt refined
there is no template cirriculum as their own major governing body is practically non existent.
Usa judo, usjf, usja and ijf as well as the kodokan all have their own cirriculum if you dont want to make your own and their own requirements. Because of all the refinement within the governing bodies and the sport itself it only takes 5 years to get your black belt.

People actually listen to the practicioners that care in Judo. It's not like bjj where people will only listen if you win.

not only that but when you ask any of them why they agree with happan it's usually a very childish retort. Why are you, and you only, the one who gets so ass-blasted by there being two threads up at the same time? It's not like the old one is gonna get bumped and you won't be able to find this one.

>too lazy to fix the number

I'm not the guy who called OP a faggot in the last thread, just the guy calling OP a faggot in this thread. The issue is that it splits the discussion into two threads and prematurely kills the discussion of topics in the old thread.
