Alright, it is Saturday and I am gonna post the thirty-first volume of Inuyasha. Feel free to react or comment on any panel, though I appreciate if image replies are not used during the dump. Feel free to discuss anything Inuyasha related after the dump.Previous thread: >>274982878Despite the OP image, I am using the VizBig 3-in-1 localization which does not feature this cover exactly. Be aware that some of the larger images have been edited to be lower quality due to image size limits.
Starting us off with the cover of the 3-in-1 Volume. Image resized for posting.
Here's the inner illustration for Volume 31 in the 3-in-1. Hmm...
February 5th, 2003. Author's note:"Q: What is a habit of yours that you find strange?A: I roll up my sleeves when I eat at home."
>>275078891Oh look, the tanuki is back. Anyway, Furinkan actually does have a note regarding the Land of Fire, just they brought it up only now: "The "Land of Fire" (火の国/Hi no Kuni) that is referenced is likely an entirely fictional place however there are two provinces that are called "Fire Country" (火国) due to sharing the first kanji in the names of their provinces- Hizen Province (modern day Nagasaki and Saga Prefectures) and Higono (modern Kumamoto Prefecture) both in southwestern Japan." Fixed a typo of theirs.

>>275079013Feh.
>>275079094Probably nothing.
>>275079119Hoooooo.
>>275079184Oh no, it has a chain. I guess that's that.
You're early this time, niceWelcome and thank you OP
>>275079243When all you have is a hammer.
>>275079264Still here!>>275079258Yeah, my schedule was up in the air for a while but it ended up like this. Thanks and enjoy.
>>275079333Gotcha!
>>275079464You might recognize these names. Furinkan notes that: "Gozu (牛頭) and Mezu (馬頭) debut in this chapter. Gozu means "ox head" while Mezu means "horse head". Traditionally these two are depicted with their respective animal heads. Both are deities who are said to guard the gate of hell in Buddhism and serve the King of Hell, King Enma (閻魔王/Enma-ou)."
>>275079582Also gotcha.
>>275079607
>>275078648On today's episode of "how will Naraku escape justice for his crimes yet again"...
>>275079647
>>275079722Dang. It wasn't that easy to get into the afterlife as a living person.
>>275079094Rare Kagura feh.
>>275079582Oh hey actual guardian deities, maybe they're frien->>275079607>those who wish to pass must first die at our hands...Oh.
>>275079735It can also conquer other stuff, but I guess this is a hard limit.
>>275079845End of chapter. Yeah, wouldn't help much with the shard plan.
>>275079915Can they not be reasonable about this.
Three pages of full color. Cover (which is a page) on the next page. February 12th, 2003. Author's note:"Q: When you were a child, what was something harsh that your remember your parents saying?A: Before they would say anything, they would hit me."
>>275079993Just doing their job. Had to resize this image to post. Sorry!
>>275080035Skipped the art spacer.
>>275080055Furinkan notes that the sound effects localized as "zzt, zzt, zzt" were 'biri biri': "When Inuyasha strikes Gozu's neck with the Tessaiga it makes the sound "biri biri" (ビリビリ) in the original Japanese edition. This onomatopoeia is used to indicate a number of different sensations and experiences such as the sound of being electrocuted, tearing paper or a prickling sensation. However in this case the sound indicates a vibration." Fixed a typo.
>>275080100Very direct.
>>275080123Time for oblivion.
>>275078932Ancient Japan was sometimes called Hinomoto no kuni. It could just mean their heading towards the East, where the sun rises, but clearly it's a reference to that caldera.>>275078987
>>275080195!
>>275079582You might remember them both appearing in Dragonball when Goku fell off snake way.
>>275080254Furinkan notes that, in regards to the Wind Tunnel: Gozu and Mezu are the only characters that Miroku's wind tunnel could not pull into his void.I am not sure how accurate that is, because I remember a few other cases, but there seem to have been other circumstances in those situations. Like Miroku being tiny.
>>275080316
>>275080254>MUH POISONOUS EARTH
>>275080339Miroku being optimistic.
>>275080385Makes some amount of sense but I feel like it is something that has to have been tested and recorded somewhere. Which raises questions.
>>275080469Furinkan notes that: "The sound Tessaiga makes when Inuyasha prepares to cut the chains binding the gate is "dokun" (ドクン). This is the onomatopoeia for a a very firm heart beat. A less substantial heartbeat would be "doki doki" (ドキドキ)."
>>275080504Red Tessaiga has been reduced to Bolt Cutter Tessaiga
>>275080504Oh, would you look at that, it came back again. And he explicitly used it. I feel like all the people who were all 'well, it was just a random bat demon's power, it can't be expected to break all the shields' should see it being used here to destroy the barrier to the afterlife. We should've at least seen Inuyasha try it explicitly against Naraku's new shields and fail, I feel.
>>275080636Zt zt zt.>>275080557Fair enough though. There is a lot of focus on the chain, which doesn't exactly look impressive.
>>275080690Huzzah.
>>275080784She was on the move and ready, for sure.
>>275080806Hm?
>>275080824End of chapter! Oh...!

>>275080898Uh oh.
>>275080806She gathered a pretty huge horde in a short time.
>>275080930Not good, not good.
>>275080982Hm?>>275080936Well, they are Naraku's so they were probably at the ready.

>>275081704I guess it doesn't seem like such a silly statement when you yourself as also largely composed of Naraku.>>275081907Usually, yeah. We even saw her take off some make-up last volume when getting ready for bed.
>>275082073Furinkan notes that: "After Hakudoshi is cut in half by Kagura he glances at her and she doubles over in pain. The onomatopoeia in the original Japanese is "zuki" (ズキ) which is a sharp, stinging pain." I feel like this might've been the sound effect localized as zark in Maison Ikkoku, but I'm not sure.
>>275082211Sorry, Kagura.
>>275082386Kirara sip.
>>275082453

>>275083124Death to the deathdealers.
>>275083192We have a Furinkan note regarding Abi's name: "Abi's name (阿毘) is made up of two kanji. The first has the meaning for "nook" or "recess" and the second for "help"." I forgot about this character by the time I read Rinne (Kyokai no Rinne, RIN-NE), but she reminds me visually a lot of Ageha.
>>275083332End of chapter. Skipping introductions.
Furinkan has a note regarding the term princess used here: "Abi is referred to as "princess" (姫/hime), however this should not be thought of in the same sense as the term is used in the West. In Japan, "princess" can be used to refer to any lady of high birth, not exclusively the daughter of an emperor or shogun. Those individuals would typically be referred to as "ojo" (王女), which is typically translated as "princess" as well leading to some confusion." February 26th, 2003. Author's note:"Q: What is something that you'd like within range of your finances?A: A potholder."
>>275083447Man, if it wasn't a demon...
>>275083471
>>275083492Of all the times to use the word venomous instead of poisonous.
>>275080982I always found sight and light based attacks silly. If you can see it then it's already struck you.
>>275083529
>>275083545Enjoy my bones. >>275083536Well, there is a distinction between seeing a sunbeam and being struck by a sunbeam. I guess it loses a lot when it reflects off a surface.
>>275083124Always happy to see sengoku stuff happening.
>>275083610Furinkan notes that: "Abi addresses her mother as "Mother" (母上/Hahaue). The Viz English edition has Abi refer to her mother as "Ma" which is more informal than the original Japanese."Maybe it was just because the bubble is small? Or maybe they felt it fit the feeling. Either way, it is inaccurate.
>>275083650Some of these villages look inviting, don't they? Too bad about the circumstances.>>275083619I actually have a wideban extra that I should've posted last time about the people living in the Sengoku era. I messed up and will post it today.
>>275083727All a man needs.
>>275083332I can fix her.
>>275083753These guys obviously resemble pterodactyls. But I don't really have much to add about that.
>>275083650Ma, you're recovering from food poisoning, and you're already trying to eat more toxic crap?
>>275083862Slice.

>>275083982Here's the big swarm solver.
>>275084005Oh no!
>>275084092The bird demon holding the trident.
>>275084160Not everyone being followed around by his wasps is Naraku's servant.
>>275084349End of chapter. A bit more monstrous.
March 5th, 2003. Author's note:"Q: Which of Doraemon's gadgets would you like to have?A: Takecopter."
>>275084641More of that chivalric side that I feel didn't exist much when he fought Yura.
>>275084760Furinkan has another remark regarding localization: "In this chapter Abi refers to herself at one point as "Abi-hime-sama" (阿毘姫様) which is a little unusual giving herself two honorifics (hime/princess & sama/lady). The Viz translation handled it by having her call herself "The Princess Abi"."I like it.
>>275084092There it is.
>>275084803
>>275083862Quite a few of the known pterosaurs were actually stupid big though there were some similar in size to these "birds." Modern reconstructions differ in a few ways with more avian traits like discreet bills and patterned plumage. That solid cone-like structure is called a sagittal crest which connects to strong jaw muscles, but usually the hard extended part is believed to just be the base of either a fleshy cockscomb or a feathery crest used in mating displays as there is a great deal of sexual dimorphism and variation from different skeletons. There's also a theory that it worked as a rudder, but you'd expect it be pretty consistent within a species then.
>>275084853
>>275084349Why is she playing dumb? Is she embarrassed?
>>275084873His reputation does not precede him. >>275084860I imagine none could suck up blood via a closed beak they use to pierce through flesh.
>>275085029Huzzah.
>>275085077
I just noticed that there’s a pattern of demon parents and children in the manga, with the parent appearing in their full demon form and their children in humanoid forms.>Sesshomaru (humanoid) and his father (giant yokai skellington)>Taigokumaru (giant yokai) and his son (humanoid )>Abi (humanoid) and her mom (giant yokai)
>>275085099Cute snuggles in that bottom panel.
>>275085292Hm.
>>275085465Can you guess who is visiting?>>275085134Yeah, I imagine you can try to imagine an in-universe reason for it, but I imagine it is just how the storytelling works out.
>>275085029You'd be surprised.https://youtu.be/oP7OLY3_UNA
>>275085526Chapter 219, in volume 23.
>>275085077>>275085099It's all so tiresome.
>>275085620Everyone is okay.
>>275080636But anon told me it only worked on demonic shields and it would've been pointless to even try it because [headcanon]!
>>275085667
>>275085720Gas, grass, or ass.
>>275085667>>275085720>sesshomaru-sama, tasukete…
>>275085720Hmmm.
>>275085989I mean why? They were just born. Why weren't they twins to start?
>>275085526Well from a storywriting perspective, it makes sense in each case. Sesshomaru is a recurring character and he needs to interact with Inuyasha and Naraku within the plot structure, so he needs to be humanoid. The Dog General is long dead so he doesn’t, so he can just be a large pile of bones. Abi here is essentially playing the same role that Sesshomaru did that one time with the arm that Naraku gave him, so she also must be humanoid - her mom can be whatever, she doesn’t really matter. And in the case of Taigokumaru you can think of Shiori as taking the place of her father in this dynamic, with her having to interact with Inuyasha and his friends.
>>275085989Furinkan notes that: "There is a piece of marginalia in this chapter explaining that "wako" (わ子) is the male child of a nobleman or lady. Takahashi's work does not typically have any marginalia". I thought this term was the same as the term that they use for Mendo in Urusei Yatsura, but the term they use there is 'waka' (若様). It seems one is an archaic form of the other, but maybe they are unrelated. >>275086065Kagura and Kanna or the infants?
>>275086304Hm? >>275086214Yeah, I know it does from a storytelling perspective, that's why I imagine that that is the primary reason for it. Good analysis.
>>275086496End of chapter. Upsetting.
Oh, I see the newer edition kept Hijiri as a proper noun. This is a bit misleading. Original title is 聖さまの里. So, village of an extremely virtuous monk or saintly individual, per Furinkan. That's what the term "Hijiri" (聖) means and it is a title. Furinkan notes that: "The Viz manga adaptation refers to them as "The Holy Woman" while the Viz anime translation refers to them as "Saint Hijiri"." But it seems for the newer edition, they just went with Hijiri. March 12th, 2003. Author's note:"Q: What book would you recommend?A: Inuyasha Ogi Kaiden Zusetsu Daisen is interesting." Furinkan's note: "This is a guidebook to the series."Teehee.
>>275086776Furinkan notes that: "The "birthing room" is mentioned at the beginning of this chapter and that is an actual location. Called a "sanshitsu" (産室), it does not refer to a full-time purpose room, but more of a room that has been prepared for the occasion of a birth. The same term is used for a cardboard box that an owner might set up for their pet to give birth to puppies or kittens."
>>275086804Doubts in her heart.
>>275086824Oh, so Inuyasha can smash any shield Naraku sets up as long as he can find it? Are we sure about that?
>>275086858Cute rescue.
>>275086880I guess it is a bit closer to a name in this localization. I am not a fan.
>>275086910Sometimes, we get these Kagome panels during exposition to sort of show her reaction to the information, but there are times when I don't know what I am supposed to gleam from her expression.
>>275086964
>>275086979...?
>>275087000
>>275087035Miroku's attack doesn't get a name.
>>275087054
>>275087076Can't let up.>>275086804I forgot to mention Furinkan's note regarding the guards talking here: "The female guards that we see discussing the deaths in the birthing room are a type of guards known as "besshikime" (別式女). Literally meaning "other-style women" these are female guards who protect the wives of noblemen and also the concubines of wealthy men. Historically their weapon of choice, as shown in this chapter, is the naginata (薙刀), a polearm. The reason the besshikime favored these was to give them an advantage against male attackers, allowing them to strike a deadly blow at a distance before a male opponent could get close enough to overwhelm them physically."
>>275087128
>>275087168Kagome had her bow out last page, but we didn't get to see her shoot. Sad.
>>275087218
>>275087245Not good enough.
>>275087264End of chapter. We get to see them.
March 19th, 2003. Author's note:"Q: Is there any food that you hate so much that you might die if you eat it?A: No."
>>275087339Fun little page of everyone.
>>275087360Vmm.
>>275087381So, I guess he wasn't using it before against Naraku? I don't know why he wouldn't be, but yeah.
>>275086858So why didn’t he just do it last time? Did he forget he had the red Tessaiga? Dumb fucking mutt.
>>275087430We had to show that Naraku's new shields can deflect wind scar. 5 different times.
>>275087406But the fact that everyone is reacting this way basically shows that the other ones against Naraku after the incident were just normal attacks. For some reason. I consider this a minor oversight in the grand scheme of things, but I do think it was an oversight. We could've had this moment earlier and it wouldn't have raised any questions.
>>275087466Zhooob.
>>275087480It was not Kagome, if that was your first thought.
>>275083727Sango's ass..
>>275087513Good hit.
>>275087530Furinkan's note about this made me laugh: "This chapter marks the death of Entei. The horse ultimately did not serve a very significant role in the series."I mean, he did help Hakudoshi look cool for a bit.

>>275087466>>275087480Well you can see exactly why she did it this way here. What do you call it when a specific technique jobs? The Spirit Bomb effect?
>>275087622Interesting...
>>275087635Who could it be?>>275087628Yeah, but it could've jobbed earlier to Naraku and accomplished the same thing. Other places call that The Worf Barrage, apparently.
>>275087701Could she be?
>>275087791He did hop to the arrow quickly.
>>275087808Are we sure it wasn't Koga?

Didn’t Tokijin manage to break Naraku’s new barrier? Even though the attack was reflected back at Sesshomaru, but still.
Here is the associated wideban extra for the last volume that I forgot to post. This one is about the people living during the Sengoku era. As usual, I will have to use two posts to fit it and will be spoilering things that relate to stuff that hasn't been shown yet."The Traps People Fall IntoIn the world of Inuyasha, there are all sorts of people. Some are scoundrels, while others live in earnest. And then there are those changed by the power of a Shikon shard. The painter Kotatsu is a good example of this. He's just a normal human in the beginning but ends up going mad. He was a simple painter who liked painting scenes of hell until he met the princess. He then tried painting her, but something wasn’t quite right. Then he came across a Shikon shard, and after seeing how a demon he drew came to life, went a bit overboard. In the end, the poor guy was devoured by his own ink. Of course, it was the only fitting ending for a man like him. I guess it would have been enough to have Inuyasha and the gang steal the shard and his painting gear and make their exit, but what he did was unforgivable. I couldn’t just let him off scot-free. I didn’t have Inuyasha kill him, though. That episode was important for developing Inuyasha and Miroku’s characters. I needed to show that Inuyasha wasn’t the type to just cut down people indiscriminately, and I needed Miroku to see that firsthand, too.Speaking of people who went a bit overboard, there’s also Tokajin. The point of that particular episode was to show Inuyasha, weakened by the new moon, pushed into a corner. The blacksmith Toshu is also human and was also driven mad by a desire for power. It’s like, some traps are only easy for people with ambitions to fall into. Traps like people promising riches for what turns out to be a bad investment. Or people promising to make you infinitely stronger. We should never fall for that kind of nonsense! (laughs)"
>>275090220Other half of the manga wideban extra. "People Just Doing Their BestI created all sorts of people. People like Taromaru's father, who switched his child with another to sacrifice in the incident with the fake water god, or the villagers who bullied Jinenji. Out of all the human characters, I think they were the most malicious hard-workers. As I said, I have created all sorts, and these people did get in Inuyasha and company’s way, but they didn’t join them on their journey. They had a place to call home, the land they’d always lived on. And on that land, they worked hard to keep on living. I don’t like drawing people just crying in defeat, so when I do human characters, even when there’s a whole crowd of them, I’d like them to be, in their own way, as strong as possible. The people of Inuyasha, whether they be selfish, scoundrels, or otherwise, are all just doing their best."
I apparently forgot to post the 14th volume Wideban cover.
And here is the 15th volume Wideban cover.
>>275088824Seems like another instance of Shippo speaking to what the audience is thinking. This is really where Inuyasha felt like it was jumping the shark.

I cant believe how little happens every single inuyasha chapter. By the end of the anime they were making a full episode of a single volume
>>275092391That was partly lack of interesting things happening, but also the fact that they rushed like 20 volumes in that final season.
