>>
>>275140089
This one and One Piece.
The main OP threads are way too autistic, especially during break weeks, so it's been fun to be able to actually talk about the story in them.

I was following the Toriko storytime and I'm currently reading the Jojo one.

besides bakuman, only jojo
>>
I wasn't able to post in the previous chapter, but that last chapter was pretty dogshit. Treating Aoki like some fragile doll who can't interact with people, setting up the moe guy to be as lecherous as possible and have Fukuda "come to the rescue" even as they were already leaving, and Fukuda punching Nakai not for the disgusting manipulation with Aoki, but because Nakai got complacent? All because of the pantyshot mandate? It's absurd and not even in an entertaining way.
At least this chapter is laying the ground for some fun stuff in the future.
>>
>>275140089
Can someone remind me when did the daily storytime threads started really popping up? They existed here and there before, but I feel like at some point in the last decade they became more common than ever

Ishizawa was always a douche. This was never going to end well so they were right to be worried. Dunno what Miyoshi saw in him to push the idea so hard.

Having never read this series before these threads, the idea of seeing how the hell she'll fall for hiramaru sounds hilarious.
>>
>>275146828
>>275146922
Right, but those reasons alone aren't enough to simply NOT do that meeting, we gotta have Aoki sign off on it and have the scenario where she gets sexually harassed in order to be rescued. Otherwise we just don't have this scenario we absolutely have to include in the manga about mangamaking, we have to have someone in-universe further objectify her fuck your buzzwords responses, that's exclusively what Ishizawa was doing and you know it
>you just don't understand how a real man thinks
I unfortunately do, and their priorities are fucked up if their first thought at hearing that scumbag shit Nakai pulled is "man he's lost his way with manga :("
>>
>>275140089
Thank you for posting.
>>
>>275147292
Fukuda even said he doesn't particularly like Aoki and he doesn't seem the type to get too angry about nakai being a scumbag to a woman until it gets to the point ishizawa was at
>>
>>275145942
Yeah, it's like Jo and Laurie all over again. What works great in fiction and leaves an audience rooting for a couple mag not work in real life or what the author wants.
I always did like,e how they're called Team Fukuda. He's 100% the protag in his own series and this is his team.

It's so funny to me that the authors clearly intended this to be her ship, and Hiramaru to be a joke.

The delinquent and the rich/pure girl, it's all setup. But Hiramaru was clearly way better received and everyone liked him, so they just pivoted to that instead. I have to agree, it's a fantastic ship, I'm glad he got to be happy.
>>
>>275150388
spoilers anon
>>
>>275146828
>before the nakai shit
Honestly, it's a rough thing what happened to Nakai's character. He was given a positive story to begin with, and then he just kept getting dragged back to play villain roles.

He got a pretty undeserved happy ending though, so it's all good I guess.
>>
>>275141194
I think it's fine that they went with Aoki. Not just for Aoki's sake but maybe even for Takagi. The last time Takagi and Ishizawa interacted, Takagi punched the latter square in the face. As for Fukuda punching Nakai, i think that's fairly straightforward. Fukuda already expressed that he doesn't care that much about the love lives of his rivals, but the fact that Nakai who was so happy that he got serialized is now fine with being just an assisstant must have pissed him off since Fukuda acknowledges Nakai's skill.
>>
>>275139341
He's so tsundere that it's ridiculous.

Bakuman, Jojo, Tomie, Naruto, and I was reading the Toriko storytime.
>>
>>275140854
I wish we could actually see what the chapters are like so we could contextualize the advice.
Like, yeah, it's easy to make fun of Miura because he keeps demanding more and more gags, but maybe that's good advice. We don't know what Tanto is like because we never see it.
>>
>>275146922
How well did Miyoshi even know Ishizawa?
She might have not realized what a terrible idea it was to expose Aoki to him and thought Takagi was exaggerating.

We just had a relationship drama with her and Fukuda said he would have done the same for everyone in his team.
Would you also say the same if it was for Hiramaru?

>Are you reading any dailies/storytimes
The only ones beside this one I’ve been reading lately are the Jiro Matsumoto storytimes. Hopefully the anon who dumps Shigurui does it again soon because I’ve been wanting to reread that.

>workplace filled with drama caused by the fat fuck you thought was going to be a temp
>can't come up with any more gags (AT LEAST THREE PER PAGE)
>editor who told you to put more gags in also gives up on you because he's early career and obsessed with proving himself with a hit
Takahama really got shafted in this arc.

>>

he really hates fat guys for some reason
>>
>>275158478
Miura isn't even that fat.
It's only his face.
>>
>>275139307
I can't really explain it but Miyoshi's face here is kinda a sign that Obata's found his way of drawing everyone that'll stay pretty consistent until the end. Everything seems a lot softer.
>>
>>275140037
>only 8 new series submissions
that always seemed overly harsh to me. Assuming 3 series got in, that means 5 people wasted drawing 100 pages and either need to change it all over again and hope it gets in next time or draw something completely new, while not being payed for any of it of course.
It's one thing if the number of submissions depend entirely on the authors themselves, but telling editors to pressure artist to draw something they know has a 80% chance to not get approved is just evil(but I get it, it's a business) In my opinion they should strive towards quality instead of quantity

>>275158946
The manga artists under contract like Ashirogi remain on the payroll. If they're not drawing manga aiming for a series, they're siphoning money.
>>
>>275153112
Yeah, she probably only knows two things about Ishizawa: Draws illustrations/comics, got punched by Takagi.
>>
>>275161505
Meant for >>275153156
Sorry. But i do agree that seeing more of the worked on manga would be both fun and give us more insight into just what kind of series it is. I feel like the only reason we don't get them is because it would be more work somehow or maybe they cut them because they wouldn't be able to focus on the characters (and drama).

Oyasumi.
>>
>>275160606
that's true, but how many of them are there? 2-3 series get axed per quarter, right? that means around 10 artist are on payroll without being serialized, and that's assuming they were getting axed towards the beginning of a contract year, thus it is likely less than 10.
From those 10, and a few newcomers, 8 already submitted something. Yeah, math doesn't look good in favor of Shueisha. Like I said, instead of just shitting out rushed manga over manga, instead try to get the artist to teach each other, or to get them to collaborate.
>>
>>275161578
I think it's because of something we discussed in a previous thread, and that, in cases like Bakuman, you need to tell not show.
"This manga here is the best comedy" but at the end Ohba can only go by their own opinion or statistics, and we know statistics suck in regards to what is popular. Meaning, if Ohba/Obata were to draw something and say "this one is good" and the readers think "Wait, this is shit" the reader will get confused "Is this really meant to be good, but Obata wasn't able to portray it, or was it meant to be shit but the characters in the story mistakenly think it is good?"
Meaning, if you just tell "this manga that is only shown offscreen is really good" we can believe that judgement at face value.
>>
>>275162005
It's worse than that.
Shueisha can renew the contract regardless of if mangaka have a series on-going, to ensure they don't leave for another publisher.
>>
>>275162005
The number builds up over the years. Even Kawaguchi Taro was kept on for a while before getting cut when it became obvious they wouldn't be able to get another series out of him.
They're essentially subsidizing authors until they can produce a hit and ensuring they don't get poached by other companies.
>>
>>275139307
Let's be honest.
If that drama did not happen and Takagi kept meeting Aoki behind Myoshis back, what would be the chance Takagi would have ended up cheating after all?
>>
>>275158896
Which is a shame, I really liked fat lips Miyoshi
>>
>>275163464
He said the attraction with Aoki was mutual so make of that what you will
>>
>>275139447
>Crow is slumping so much otters overtook it
Never noticed this, even on previous re-reads.
If we consider Crow is a consistent 2nd~3rd normally, even a slump couldn't have put him lower than 6th.
Hiramaru being a joke character who does gag manga we never really get his numbers or and aspect of how popular otters is, but with how a lot of the jokes are (spend all your money so you have to keep working!), They only work if it's super popular.
>>
>>275165526
I think the latest part where we heard about how Otters was doing was it slipping down.
The spending money jokes aren't that related to success, because while sales can help on getting money, you still have the standard fees, and the idea that Yoshida is intentionally driving him to debt to force him to work.

>while not being payed for any of it of course
If they gave out a stipend to everyone who attempted to get in then someone could game that system and just shit out nonsense to scrape in the stipends.
Also, pressuring artists for submissions isn't asking them to throw away their work, it's taking a chance. If they've GOT an editor it means they show promise, and some authors won't know they have lightning in a bottle until it debuts. It's a creative field so it has a lot of burnout to it, but it's also a great medium for expression, asking artists to make something to express knowing there's no assurances it finds purchase isn't evil.
Now, the mandated 19-pages-a-week and only the absolute best or most medically necessary getting the hiatuses and regular breaks they need not to just collapse from it all? That's the evil part. Pursuing serialization is fine, the serialization itself, where you're locked into a brutal work schedule that erases any social life even if you're successful, that's the worst part.

Nakai here reminds me of when you see a friend after a long time and they've gone to shit.
Like, you're happy to see them, but it's always sad. Alot of my old friends are getting fatter and developing sleep apnea, saying 'it sucks getting old' when they aren't even 30, haven't started families, and they seem to have lost most of their passions.
The friend I used to collaborate on neat little side projects like Halo 3 Machimia and comics is now pretty obese and is a chronic gamer(the autistic kind who has max level classes/crafts in FFXIV) who's always in the process of getting his life together, but only has internet friends. And it sucks because whenever we all get together and play board games I can still see that talent he has for being tricky and charismatic. All that potential, just GONE.

Both softies at heart. Nakai really fucked up badly though so I doubt anything could have been done at this stage. He really fucked over Takahama with his antics and squandered that opportunity with Aoki by demanding a relationship in exchange for work.

>>275173671
Well there are at least enough snippets by the end to suggest that Yoshida would be able to tard wrangle him into self-improvement. It's played up for laughs but we do see him lose some weight in pursuit of Aoki's older sister who looks exactly like her and totally exists as Yoshida claims.

Takagi treated Miyoshi pretty poorly in the last arc but a) he's half Nakai's age and b) he was keeping secrets from his partner not lusting after everything with a pussy. Nakai is behaving far more egregiously especially since like >>275177408 pointed out he left Takahama in the lurch, at least Takagi's motives were relatively pure

I recall one of the editors later on saying he's pretty much blacklisted after all the trouble he caused (at least until Yoshida gives him a chance). And as we see later in his return he becomes more of a scumbag with using his skills to chase after girls or give the ones he works with preferential treatment when he works for Nanamine. There's nothing stopping him from looking for a writer himself but he's a lazy fat fuck who lacks motivation and passion.

the idea behind the power is fine, and even though I made fun of the gag nature, that could have been okay too, It's clear what Oda was trying to do. But the execution was horrible. Oda only knows 3 cartoon slapstick jokes and reuses them over and over again and it completely ruins Luffys personality, where he has been retconned into a maniac laughing retard

>since when has being good at drawing ever gotten artists girls?
a lot of times when you're in a group of strangers/classmates/coworkers etc. and the topic comes you are drawing, there is usually one or two girls who say if you can draw them. But even if you whip up a quick sketch with available materials there(which is usually just a notepad page and a pencil) the topic then quickly stops and everyone forgets you exist. Thus to some lonely guy they will think "Oh my god, girls payed attention to me because I can draw well!" when in reality no one really cares aftrer those initial 5 minutes

Nika is ALL those things you fucking retard, how fucking dense are you? Just admit you fucked up, there is no shame in it, even Nakai did it. Go ahead, just admit "I was being in hypocritical in criticizing an element of Nika even though I didn't do it for any other mythological beings in One Piece. Mostly because every one else was doing it and I tried to fit in"
>>
>>275193977
First of all, chill out, you seething retard. This isn't an OP thread in the first place.
Second, the point is that going from rubber fruid to sun god is such a brainless non-sequitur, you could go from any possible devil fruit power to god, so it feels completely unsatisfying as great plot twist.
>>
>>275194203
I won't seeth if I see someone intentionally cutting off their fingers and then try to be a goalkeeper. If I see someone acting stupid, I will call him out on it.
As the other anon mentioned, there are countless "reallife" mythological beings that make no sense in their attributes, but you don't care about that. Fire burns, it doesn't revive, and yet you accept that.
But here is the thing, now you throw in that it is unsatisfying as a plot twist, something else you heard people talk about, but that has nothing to do with the argument you tried to bring across before. You just know you are meant to dislike it, but don't know why.
>>

>>
>>275191914
It's kind of an important detail.
Nakai is fat and ugly, so he's a creep for pursuing anything romantic with Aoki and Kato, because they don't reciprocate at all.
Whereas on the other hand, women like Takagi first, and therefore he's only in the wrong if he treats them badly.
All attention is bad attention when coming from a guy like Nakai.
>>
>>275193383
That's not an insignificant difference. Nika doesn't exist, so we as the audience have absolutely no reference for what Nika is and isn't supposed to do.
Maybe if a One Piece pantheon had been established beforehand and we knew anything about Nika more than 26 chapters before the reveal, it wouldn't feel as retarded.
>>
>>275195266
Again, it's not Nika being you guys have a problem with, it's the plottwist. Two completely different things. I agree that it as a plottwist was handled very badly. If they had mentioned two or three times through the 1000 chapters "Luffy, with your rubber body and your goal to free people, you're like Nika" and of course we should have gotten Vegapunks explanation about Devilfruits emerging from human desire much earlier, so that the reader could have come up with the theory themselves that gum gum is actually Nika fruit. Or maybe even, hint that someone else currently alive has gum gum powers.
Basically, it was handled badly. But

Astronomically based. So many artists moan about not being able to draw their own shit and be like the people they look up to, but they always think it's someone else's fault, like the market, and never self-reflect on maybe it's just that they're bad and need to improve.

In front of Ashirogi specifically because he knows they've been belligerent before. This cuts off the possibility for them to just switch editors and makes their failures their fault. Especially given Takahama's demeanor, he hasn't tried addressing any of his problems with Miura too, he's much too timid to confront him on that and is the type to just vent and complain to others rather than address problems as they arise.

Clamp had multiple series at the same time with Tsubasa Chronicle and that other better series. The one with bigger focus on SoL and youkai. Poor PokeSpe team was BURIED in three contractually obligated publications at the same time I think. And the Iruma author is also working on 3 series at the same time right now, I think? And Cool also did multiple publications concurrently at some points in his career.

It's really not that unheard of even these days, no need to go back to Showa.
>>
>>275202796
Disregard his opinion. Ultimately, YOU hand him your script, and he brings it to the printers. If your editor doesn't bring stuff to the printers, but you handed him the names, he's going to be in hot fucking shit with his higher ups.
The editor cannot force his opinions onto you unless his superiors agree. And if multiple people disagree with you, then there's a good chance it's not just your editor being bad.

You can definitely establish one in-universe.
The gods don't have to actually exist for characters to believe in them.
And believing is enough for a devil fruit to manifest them into reality somewhat.
>>
>>275201247
>Eventually he spends 20 days incubating a fertilized chicken egg to create something neither human nor monster.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XRNsXxp63JQ
>>
>>275206276
That's true, but doing a more universal pantheon might be an issue, it's not like the entire world believes in the same deities, and because of WG hiding all this stuff, it'd be hard to come by that info.
Just more of an argument to have done the infodump at Skypiea, which is at the center of the whole thing anyways, both in the "hint" and explaining what gods are in the setting to begin with.
>>
>>275201327
If I got a message like that, I'd assume Shizuka killed himself.
>>
>>275201247
Honestly it sounds more like the whole thing is meandering padding for a pokemon/jojo clone that doesn’t happen yet, which seems to betray the point of a one shot.
>>
>>275205578
EIC definitely had Ashirogi be in the room for a reason.
It was a lesson for everyone. Takahama, Ashirogi, and even Miura.
>>
>>275206451
There's a lot that can be said about the narrative delivery mechanically re: things pre-existing to not come out of left field, how far back stuff should be established to work, but it's not as if there was zero setup - human fruits all have consistent drawbacks, Luffy is likened to a deity by Hyo, the constant references towards who will herald the dawn, and the inconsistent rubber powers (people have called G4 bullshit as well since it debuted since rubber can't fucking bend). Thematically its existence and execution is on point and the deeper connections that are obviously there. This conversation has been had for almost 3 years now and the same people crying about not being foreshadowed enough versus the Enel shit versus "sh-should've just been the Gomu Gomu with zero thematic cohesion to the rest of the narrative ;_;" shit hasn't changed since. Most people who enjoy Gear 5 can accept that some of the delivery was clunky, but the ultimate package is wonderful.
>>
>>275206667
Which is why it felt incomplete.
Like, I imagine the one-shot is a story about hatching the egg, a heartfelt story of sort.
>>
>>275201303
It's gradual but scenes like these make Miura look a lot worse by comparison. He's at a loss at what to do and gets lackluster suggestions from Aida. Meanwhile when Yamahisa has problems Yoshida immediately tells him what he needs to do to fix things. And we have Hattori setting his 4d master plan in motion.

>>275201408
>>275201429
Harsh but true. As long as they're working for Jump they have to account for the market it's targeting and the structures built around that even if they aren't perfect. It's not the only path to success but it's the one the characters chose.
>>
>>275202796
The editor can't force the author to do anything, only make suggestions that would make the series sell.
If you ignore the editor and your series still sells, then you're gucci.
>>
>>275206667
Soft disagree, short stories don't need to have concrete endings, especially if the theme is about something existing beyond our understanding and opening your mind to that. Just what Hattori has as the exposition is a solid short story with suspense and involves changing the character and reader's understanding about what is possible, it only seems like a standard shonen premise because we're cultured to shonen and know what to expect, like watching Toku and thinking "I bet we'll get a new powerup soon, they gotta sell a new toy." Someone who's as outside of shonen as a genre as Iwase is just writing a story in a way that's actually compelling in its ideas. It'll depend on execution, which is what Eiji is great at since he's executing on the feeling he gets while reading it, getting fully into the suspense.
What I find interesting is that there's once again zero focus on the characters. Most of the fake manga in Bakuman can only really get the premise across, but some like Kiyoshi have been able to show off their power being in their protagonist. As is, Iwase just wrote a strong scifi premise but a shallow one, just like Takagi writes.
>>
>>275206997
Kiyoshi is fine because its a gag manga with a battle shonen setting. "Kiyoshi shows the power being in their protagonist" is silly, when every single character in Kiyoshi is a trope being played straight, especially the protagonist.
>>
>>275201247
sounds like a generic as fuck story

>>

It's also true that Miura isn't entirely at fault though. Aida is supposed to give him advice as his boss, like Yoshida does, and his advice sucks.
EiC meanwhile tells the mangaka to suck it up, which also implies that Miura isn't in the wrong in general.
>>275207380
Then they should've made a better time travel story to convince Miura otherwise, like EiC said.
They do technically have free hands after serialization starts though, since the editor can't stonewall them anymore.
Of course, you can't print literally whatever, Shueisha would still stop you if you made content that's deemed inappropriate, but that's a separate issue.

Miura canned BB and now has the ashirogi pair sitting on their ass trying to get Tanto to work when it's obviously not something they are suited to, yet EOC is just sitting back and taking his side?
>>
>>275207822
>Miura canned BB
Takahama's the author, not Miura. If Takahama couldn't make something good with Miura's suggestions or in spite of his suggestions, that's his fault since he has creative control. From the looks of it Miura had no idea Takahama was struggling with his suggestions. How could he, when Takahama doesn't fucking articulate his problems?
In part, Takahama's the fucking one who put the idea in Ashirogi's heads that Miura's no good, yet Miura hadn't heard a word of contradiction from Takahama. Miura was able to work out a compromise with Ashirogi because they both admitted their biases and worked together to reach a conclusion. None of that fucking happened with Miura and Takahama because Miura seems surprised that Takahama was having problems with him specifically.

Takahama seems to be very passive. He let Nakai sexually harass the pedo female assistant the entire time and never spoke up about it until the very end.

You need to let some time pass between re-reads. It's been like 3 months since they read it first and no progress had been made since because they got complacent.
>>
>>275208495
>No??? what the fuck is he talking about?
You can't tell me you enjoy a manga exactly as well as you did when you first read it. He doesn't say that it is worse than it was before, just that it does not feel as good as when you first read it. The surprise is gone, you know what happens, this limits enjoyments. The more you know the less you will enjoy a media, it's a pretty much universal accepted human trait.
>>
>>275208889
This is true for some manga, but for others you appreciate them better the second time. Just like reading a well crafted book, you can see the details and how they converge.
A truly good work resists reevaluation.
>>
>>275201538
I remember not seeing that pairing coming on my first read, and yet it made so much sense. That was a great twist.
I'm actually curious to know when exactly they planned to introduce Akina as a rival.
>>
>>275208929
that only applies to very limited media that intentionally wants to surprise you later on. And it's not really better, just a different perspective
Like, let's say a murder mystery. After reading it once, you now know "Aha, when this happened, X was behind the curtains the whole time" but you also know "Right, X is the culprit, which Is revealed only in chapter 126"
But then you read it a third time, and both of these impressions are gone, now it's neither "who is the killer?" nor "Wow, so he was there the whole time", it's just "Right right, I know"
>>
>>275209128
I assume since the beginning, as her character in the story would have been otherwise just a weird break from the actual plot
>>
>>275209198
>that only applies to very limited media that intentionally wants to surprise you later on
I'd say the opposite, stuff that relies on cheap plot twists are the ones that don't hold up in a reread.
I've read Yotsuba quite a few times, and I've found new appreciation each time, sometimes for the characters, others for appreciating Azuma's artistry and figuring out how he sets up his chapters, for example.
It doesn't need to be a masterpiece, just truly good.
Every time I read LOTR, I enjoy new dimensions, even though I know how it ends.

Isnt that pretty much a given ? Nizuma wouldnt even be able to get a second series without his editor to give the request to the higher ups.
>>
Nothing to do with anything, but I fucking hate people calling stuff 'media'. It's so soulless.
>>
>>275210483
While I kind of see what you mean, it's still a useful shorthand for when referring to fiction stories in general regardless of specific medium like manga. "stories" works too but can be a bit clunky in some contexts.
>>
>>275210543
I didn't really hate it before, I think it started when that retarded 'media literacy' meme appeared.
>>
>>275210483
I assume you are referring to me
I use that because I needed a word that encompasses everything including movies, tv shows, videogames, manga etc. as the things I talked about apply to all these situations. "Media" fits for that purpose.
It's not anymore soulless than the word "manga" itself.
>>
>>275210641
Nothing about you specifically, I was just reminded.
I also dislike 'content', and 'consuming'.
I think it's because all these highlight the commercialization of art.
>>
>>275204942
The hattoris are clearly the most competent editors, they cant
>>
>>275201486
>If you disagree with your editor, then just do what you really want and BTFO him

This doesn't seem like a good thing to say to Ashirogi since they've already done this before and caused headaches. And he's saying it right after saying to leave the magazine if you can't get along with your editor.
>>
>>275207235
Hattori literally says it's simple. You are meant to think the execution is great
>>
>>275209198
Assuming you actually got everything the second time through, maybe to an extent, but there's still the enjoyment of the medium itself and the means it uses to unfold information that is enjoyable. Most people read things for the characters' journeys and will reread even if that journey ends badly, because the journey you take with them is what you resonate the most with, not the ending.
>>
>>275202796
It's funny that Miura was never validated as a good editor throughout the entire series, the one good thing he did was swallowing his pride and worked together with Hattori to manipulate Ashirogi into eventually creating PCP, then when he became the editor for Akina's series he was shown to be incompetent and never had any good suggestions so the series fell down below the top 3 rankings it used to have when Hattori was the editor.
>>
>>275208929
>>275209198
I think you are both right. A good work will be enjoyable even on multiple rereads, but the first reread will still be unique due to the experience and ability to capture emotions like suspense and wonder etc.
>>
>>275206837
Aids might be the worst editor in the series, it always feels like he just doesn't give a fuck, doesn't help his teammates, gives up instantly when shoved by authors. How the fuck did he get to be head of his team is over me
>>
>>275201684
If I recall right, A. Toriyama was such a monster that he ended his scripts and chapters in a single day before the deadlines. Its not possible that another "talent" freak like Eiji could carry two series at the same time.
>>
>>275210779
I'd reword your quotation to
>If you disagree with your editor, then BTFO him with what you want.
I believe the point is [proving] that you know better. That's not the same as discarding your editor or quitting.
>>
If the mangaka has all the responsibility and anyone complaining about their editor is just a whiner, how does a legitimately bad/useless editor get held accountable? Is there some unspoken critical mass of whining where you start taking it seriously?

Total editor death
>>
>>275211387
Still, seems like bad advice for Ashirogi who got cocky and tried it before. Unless he's trying to tell them to keep doing it, which would be a pretty big slight towards Miura.
>>
>>275211773
I just somehow lost an entire post about this but basically the structure of how an editor works prevents that. Having the skills to be an editor at all would be in the interview, so ability to communicate and interpret art and manga would be part of that. You start with editing for enterprising mangaka, not immediately with published authors until you've had some experience. You bring in new pitches that you help new mangaka on, which means if you bring in nothing despite having multiple meetings, either your mangaka are too poor or your standards too high, but you're pressured for submissions either way. If you green light a pitch that's dogshit, it will come up since every pitch is reviewed by every editor before consideration, so the entire office keeps tabs on what everyone else is submitting. That's why you see stuff like Yoshida's commented concerns with True Human. An editor less lax than Yamahisa would have known that immediately and given that guidance already, but Yamahisa has different standards. The peer review is what likely helps the higher-ups keep tabs on what each editor considers potential as and where their priorities lie. It isn't going to be a job you can just phone in and skate by with those metrics, you need to demonstrate that your scrutiny is valuable.
At the end of the day Takahama is madly coping. He's running his complaint up to Miura's boss rather than confront him at all and is only complaining once he got his series canceled despite Miura being his editor the entire time, including helping him get serialized. Takahama refusing to communicate and compromise and unenthusiastically inserting Miura's suggestions is more likely what killed the series than Miura having suggestions. If you disagree with the editor, you can find a compromise you feel confident in and give it a shot, or take the editor's advice and give it an earnest try like Ashirogi are now with gags.
>>
>>275212278
At the end of the day EiC is saying that a mangaka can't drop their editor unless they drop the magazine. On the flip side, the editor and magazine can drop the client if they find them unreasonable, changing editors can happen for any number of reasons but creative differences are going to create tension and editors may just get tired of dealing with artists if they refuse to take any direction and Shueisha is under no obligation to entertain a client who can't follow instructions.
Ashirogi have tried to go behind Miura's back before, but they've already been reamed for that; in that case, the subterfuge was what was wrong, not challenging Miura's suggestions, it was the circumventing the rules and being so disrespectful by submitting something without any eyes from Miura on them. They already had an exchange re: what they're really good at when they very first brought up that gags weren't Takagi's forte and they wanted something more serious.
>so do you have a serious story pitch for me?
So Miura was willing to entertain their preference if they had something onhand to back it up.
>>
>>275201429
Skill Issue
>>
>>275210777
Our Hattori is competent, the other one much less so.
Give me the legendary super manipulator instead.
>>
>>275207380
you have to remember their time travel story only got one rank higher than the gag manga so the point of the EiC still stands, both One Shots were so mediocre, that they went the gag manga route because it wasn't gonna get axed by chapter 10.
>>
>>275212398
I feel like the problem with the system described here is that editors are evaluated on their skills as a critic more than their actual editing skills. It's like grading jockeys based on their ability to pick out a horse that looks like a winner, but then you just automatically assume they're competent at riding and that there must've just been something wrong with the horse if they lose. It seems hard to ferret out a jockey who's just shit at riding in such an environment, especially if he's otherwise really good at picking out good looking horses.
>>
>>275214283
A lot of editing stuff isn't going to be documented or seen, but the polish in the final product will be apparent. While you're right that it doesn't suss out an editor who gets a golden goose, they still would be clear from their commentary on what they can actually understand about works. An editor who has the critical analysis to see what really shines or really needs work in a piece will also apply that to their clients, whereas someone whose only commentary is "looks good 10/10" will quickly make themselves obviously inferior.
>>
>>275208292
it was awkward as fuck from the beginning
>>
>>275211201
he should have stayed as PCP editor, it made no sense why Hattori would be demoted from One Piece if he was so good
>>
>>275215189

>google "most popular franchise" and got Pokemon
>write a Pokemon clone with scifi trappings because of Takagi
>>
>>275215798
it's still really hard to believe she's that talented to write a successful pokemon knock off. Doing a non shonen like serious story like Takagi would have made more sense. If anything a detective manga that was better than Trap would have made more sense and caused Takagi to seethe more.
>>
Shueisha rides on the creators' backs, not the other way around. Why do we forget that many mangakas have said that the editor system is flawed and needs a lot of fixing? The chokehold collectivism has on Japan is detrimental to this kind of work situation since they can't speak against it until they become big creators, but until then Shueisha does whatever they please, they even hold editor's opinion HIGHER than other mangakas unless its someone important.
>>
>>275215979
If mangaka don't like it they can just self-publish on the internet.
>>
>>275216058
They did, and thats why now Shueisha has an app and jump plus
>>
>>275215848
I think it's reductive to think of something as just a knock-off when the writer in question has no knowledge of the tropes and trappings of it. That might be why it feels fresh even to Niizuma, is my guess. It's not just a cashgrab attempting to capitalize on what's popular, it's just a story told well.
>>
>>275211201

>>275217572

>>
>>275217439
Honestly, I'm not sure how much I actually trust Nizuma's taste. He liked Ten and Future Watch even though they were both mid by all other indications.
>>
>>275211773
I think some of this will be mentioned later on, but it's not really a spoiler
but basically, the magazine does have a LOT of responsibilities the artist are never been told because it shoudn't be on their mind. The publisher is the one that prints hundreds of thousands of volumes without knowing if it will really sell well or not, so they are sponsoring the money. The editors are the ones who have to deal with lawsuit if the manga promotes harmful messages, not the artist. The first one to be chewed out when a series gets low rankings is the editor, not the artist.
Commercialized systems like a publishing company are a privilege, not a right. A single artist could always go independent, but then they would have to give up all on the pros a publisher can provide, which at the end of the day most are not willing to do
>>
>>275219253

The best time of the day has finally arrived.
Every chapter gets us closer to the end of this godforsaken Tanto arc.

I'm not sure how important it was for them to create a gag manga, I suppose it's just to show that they're maturing to being professional creatives and not just wild and untamed kids. At the very least on this re-read I've come to see the light that everyone's favorite gag editor isn't actually as bad as we thought.
