Where did this trope of characters explaining their own flaws and character arcs come from?I absolutely hate it. Not only is it completely unnatural, no one speaks like this, it undermines the characters by making them seemingly self aware of their flaws the whole time yet doing different.Worst of all is it's literally just the writer jacking themselves off to the audience about the characters they've written and their own writing. Every single time it's shit and feels like ass, but I'm only seeing more of it. Why can't writing speak for itself? If you have to explain your emotional depth maybe you did a shit job of actually conveying it.

You don't realise you're in a bad crowd, and they encourage you to do things contrary to how you've been raised. Eventually a lot of that can turn into hatred towards the authority figure, i.e. the parents, because they're trying to effect change or will enforce rules or restrictions that the child won't see is for their benefit. Then at 18 they move away, hate their parents but maybe later in life gain more perspective.There are many examples of loving parents whose kids just didn't turn out well. Of course, you can say the parent is at fault for not doing X, Y and Z, but like I said the reality is there are a lot more factors and even as a parent, with school, time out with friends, on weekdays you don't acually have much influence on your kid. It's all different in the case of neglectful parents and parents who don't provide support. But sometimes our understanding is flawed, and even if you're seeing a therapist, they will only always have the version you're conveying to them. Even their understanding of the situation is based on a flawed premise, so they can't always help you be fully self aware in a way that's actually true. They can make you think you're self aware, but how often do you look back on a situation later in life and realise how differently it could have been handled or how things were more nuanced than you realised?
