Go-Bots doesn't get enough credit for being one of Hanna Barbera's best cartoons of the 80s. Once you get beyond the stigma that it's a "Transformers Ripoff" (which it was never intended to be, both shows were developed independently based on different pre-existing toylines) the animation is fluid, the art direction is fantastic, the writing is entertaining and exciting, and the voicework is superb.
Wanna know how nasty Cy-kill is? He once shrunk the entire population of earth and put them into some glass globes and used them as hostages. When things weren't going his way, he simply crushed one of the globes and casually snuffed out 1/5 of the human species. it was a fake. The real globes had already been rescued, but Cy-kill didn't know that

However, the 80's kid in me still kinda sees robots turning rocks as a bit of a downgrade compared to robots turning into vehicles, man-made objects, and wildlife, but at least some of their designs were decent.As for that GoBots Rock Lords movie, the last time I last watched it was on home video in the late 80's. While I barely remember much of that movie now, I do think it would be have been better off as a 5-part episode in the GoBots show. I felt GoBots' 5-parters were one of the show's strengths and HB probably could have gotten a bit more mileage out of the brand without the financial hassles of a theatrical movie release, especially with several toy commercial movies flopping in theaters at that time.Pic kinda unrelated, but I find it in a desuarchive search earlier and thought it was be cool to post it here.

It really seems like the perfect way to have handled both because it played to Hanna Barbera's strength with knowing TV animation, and because the competing GI Joe movie is structured so cleanly it feels like it was actually made with the intent to be diced up into five episodes for TV play later. Which would make sense, since GI Joe is another cartoon where the people made it had also quite the experience in the 5 parter department. Either way you can tell they bit off more than they could chew with the film in a sense, because it just feels like a long episode of the show you've always watched. But instead we live in the world where it was theatrical and so Rock Lords gets raked over the coals (pun not intended) because people have to once again compare to it Transformers... a match up that the film never intended and unfortunately is out of its weight class.But I don't think HB made any extra effort on their films until Jetsons... which of course, underperformed. I think all their movie animation did for the most part.
