I can't stand this show anymore. in terms of storytelling, it's spectacular how lopsided it is as a work of "art"I'm not even like a /pol/brained trannyhater or whatever, ADC is jarring in a way that delegitimizes the entire medium.It poses itself as this sort of Gen Z fusion between Steven Universe and I Have No Mouth And I Must Scream while commiting to nothing other than have the characters like sit around, gawk or scoff at how wacky everything is, and then make kind of juvenile grasps at "horror" or existentialism. They treat the whole "computer simulation" thing as a big reveal every time it's brought up even though it's literally the basic premise of the show introduced both in the TITLE and the first 30 seconds of the first episode. It actually makes me uncomfortable how the show feels the need to spoon-feed you the themes, characters, premise. Even the characters themselves seem to have the attention span of a toddler (Ex: why do they constantly forget Kinger becomes sane in the dark when they establish that concretely in the first few episodes?) The show is "not for kids" but is trying it's hardest to be, it does that indirect gesturing at mature themes that Steven Universe, Gravity Falls, and Adventure Time do, except those shows *had* to do that to work around being made for children.There seems to also be some heavy handed theme about the characters being specific mental illnesses or responses to trauma, but it doesn't work because it treats these conditions like the Psychiatric Power Rangers. Jax is the Narcissist Ranger, Pomni is the Anxiety Ranger, Zooble is the Dysphoria Ranger, Kinger is the Dementia Ranger, Ragatha is the Borderline/Parental Abuse Ranger, Gangle is the Manic Depression Ranger, Caine is the Autism Ranger. It's like something a ambitious 14 year old would come up with - I know, let's make CARTOON mascots for mental illnesses, that won't be hard to pull off in a tasteful and insightful way.

There's something going on (which you can only learn through the promotional material + 30 seconds of the last few episodes) with Jax, which I'm sure is gonna be a big reveal that he's choose multiple: 1. In a coma or disabled in real life, which is why he doesn't want to leave the circus 2. Murdered another circus dweller 3. Becomes the new circus master, but what would be the point? What would the show have to say? That murder is bad? That trapping people in a simulation sucks?The characters have no real interactions, it's just them like commenting on how weird/depressing shit is or giving exposition. I think the only scene with personality in the series is like where Jax tries to imply Zooble worked at a gay bar or was an alcoholic or something. It's just a grab bag of 1D tropes

The character banter is severely undercooked for their situation. Episode 8 starts and everyone is just sitting at the sofas quietly staring at the floor or something, despite there being an entire Circus to explore and even a neat little restaurant area that they've never shown us until later in the episode.Apparently they just sit there waiting for the episode to start, and as soon as it does, Jax gets up, snarkily address Zooble, and gets ready to leave, and only then do the characters start actually conversing.It's just so weird and awkward.The characters themselves are undercooked. Most of them seem to have basically instantly accepted they can't get out of the circus or really do anything about their situation, even though it's revealed in episode 8 that they essentially could've just done something to at least stop caine *at any time* *in literal minutes*.It's like the writers completely forgot that if your entire premise is that characters are trapped in a fantasy world, the main arc or conflict should be about them learning how to or trying to escape that world. And no, it isn't an allegory for learned helplessness or whatever because they DO eventually do something about it almost effortlessly. There wasn't some long series of clues or small discoveries, it's literally just the shit they learn in like THE THIRD EPISODE.Caine's freakout is also barely built up at all, aside from him being slightly miffed at the circus dwellers in earlier episodes for being reluctant to interact with him/the circus. Then he just suddenly snaps and does the whole epic "I AM GOD" scene.The pacing and story progression are like, wildly incoherent, and it feels like watching a show for dementia patients.At least the shapes and colors are cool though
