what about the cables? I went out of my way to buy vesa arms for my monitor but they are too big and the horizontal space on my current desk is limited. My remaining options are either mini soundbars or pebble thingies

>what about the cables?
Cables go to the edge of the desk and travels to the reaciver under the desk. If you really hate the cables you can drill small holes in the desk.
You can also mount speakers on the wall if your desk is too small.

I bought some sticky rings things to attach under the desk so I can redirect cables in a clean way. So maybe I can get away with those
>>
>>107643174
I use similar ones too for some cables, if they have genuine M3 or at least good sticky tape, they are fine. Sometimes you might get some with really shitty tape, they easily come off over time under load.

I switched my htpc from win10 to bazzite, added a irc client for my download needs and changed the wallpaper to a loli. Then in plugged in my old logitech gamnepad, fired up steam and installed rune factory. It just works. My memory of win10 is slowly fading. Like an old friend that slowly went insane and i broke off contact after calling the cops on him for harassing me. Good times.

no offense, but linux is not for you, it isn't even meant to be a desktop OS to begin with.
go the win11 route or mac

i'm not sure what's so bad about nor reaciving updates? I disabled windows defender anyway so it won't mess up cracks for VSTs and games.

They're german, so fat chance they'll go down in price at all. Also 20 euro for dhl shipping, lmao.
I swear, ebay prices are insane. I went through several pages of listings none were at an actually good price. Some even went above 200. Even the chinks are selling for above what I'd pay for a new one.

5800X3D and 5080 user here.

1) Save money and get 32 GB ram instead (unless you are using pc for some serious workloads)

2) No matter if you have monitor in 1080p, 1440p or 4K you want to use DLSS4 which will give you some extra FPS but image clarity is also improved (even at cost of some minor glitches but its miles better than having TAA on or playing with native resolution that have artifacts or unstable image while gaming)

3) If you have stable satisfactory FPS (60/90+) then you don't need an upgrade. I'm coming from 2060 Super so for me it was pretty much a 4x more performance.
>>
>>107643156
Maybe they don't even make the MX500 anymore, I haven't dealt with SATA SSDs in a while, but they used to be the best price/performance/reliability.
Anyways 870 is good too.

If I was to upgrade the 3900x it would have to be for something of that calibre or more. Really just struggling to find a use case in current year, I've gone back to playing Stalker Gamma in my free time because everything just sucks now.
My favourite games in the last few years have been Balatro, Rimworld.. little bit of Dwarf Fortress. Honestly shit I could probably play on a smart fridge.

STALKER loves single core performance though, 9800X3D would probably give a huge boost over 3900X.

is debian beginner friendly?

>>
>>107643017
I've been using debian since jessie and have distro hopped a bit but always return to the big D, it's my most familiar linux by far
I do all of the things you listed on debian. I think the only thing that could possibly be a deal-breaker is that the latest proprietary nvidia drivers are in the stable repo are rather old. There's no way to bypass the stable repo that doesn't introduce some kind of unreliability into your system, and attempting to outsmart it and backport newer software is usually what ends up breaking things down the line and souring people on debian.
It's the ideal operating system for someone who enjoys using LTS versions or the oldest supported release of everything, but the out of the box desktop experience is very polished, especially if you choose Plasma since it has the most mature wayland implementation for all the DE versions available (and debian defaults to wayland out of the box now)
>>
>>107643071
That seems what i am looking for generally. But how often does Nvidia update their proprietary drivers for this repo?
>>
>>107643092
Nvidia doesn't manage the nvidia driver version packaged in debian stable, the drivers are repackaged and distributed by the debian team. Updates are almost never, unless the version stops being supported by nvidia or there's a security reason to update
The latest non-free nvidia driver version in Trixie is 550.xx.yy which will probably stay until it's no longer supported

Use Swap on ZRAM first.
Use a file if your workloads demand more than this. You can re-size it easily if you need more.

but if i want to play games on a laptop with limited ram i should use a swap file/partition right?

>>

Yes, the kernel should push desktop shit to swap while your games are running.
>>
>>107642950
>>107643054
yeah especially whith low ram you should have at least some sort of swap otherwise your system will just crash.
If you want to use Hibernate (suspend to disk) you need some form of swap. File is easier / more flexible because resizing is like 2 seconds but you need to provide a block offset for initramfs when using a swap file.

Escape sequences are not guaranteed to behave the same on all terminals, some might not be present at all. Your program would have to detect the terminal type and adjust the sequences used accordingly, and there's no reason to reinvent the wheel when ncurses will do it for you.
