were they a stroke of genius or a mistake? and how come no-one ever tried implementing rational numbers in hardware?
Like a long double?
>>107709755Pure genius.
>>107709755rationals are already really fast in software. if you constraint the denominator, all operations become int operations which hardware can already do. This is typically what you do to represent money, e.g : int / 100.ieee754 is really good, but it has some weird features, like subnormals. it's also extremely non trivial to implement transcendental functions like sin, tan, log, atan etc.. because you either have to use higher precision or rely on weird tricks like IBM's math library does.

A newer 2070 system with a 10th gen cpu will cost you $300, a cunthair more or less. 4060's go around $500, and 4070's around $800. 8gb of vram is just something we'll have to deal with at the budget level for now. I cant tell you to spend over a thousand dollars on some shitty computer just for 12gb vram, but you arent assembling parts, even used parts. for these prices

Why are these things still made and used? Most phones don't include a slot for them, and they're the only device small (if modern phones can even be called that) enough to justify using them over a full size card. I know the Switch and Steam Deck use them, but those are also big enough that they surely could've made them with full-size cards in mind
>>107709349>>107709355I don't even use them with phones or digital cameras anymore. I have several in use for flashcarts though, like my GBA. A few for old computers, some as HDD replacements and others as secondary storage (PCMCIA CF to SD, parallel port SD adapter, etc). Onboard memory for a few security cameras around the house. Couple SBCs that aren't in use but ready with SD cards. All my 3D printers use SD cards too. Probably forgetting a few things.
>>107709349Lol I use these all the time, in devices.
retro handhelds, steamdecks, switches, cameras
pretty much every portable device on the planet has microsd slots except for >high end smartphones, one thing that could really use them it's retarded
>>107710435It's by design. The high end models now have enough storage to not need them. I think my s23 Ultra has 512gb of storage and I've been using it for years taking videos, pictures, downloading shit, installing things like godot and my repo etc. and I still think I've only used like half the storage or some shit.

Why don't we have a similar system as the Seiko Kinetic watches for recharging the batteries from smartbands and smartwatches?

I was drunk at 3am and my computer speakers broke, so I bought this+2x50w bluetooth amplifier and power source thinking that I'm genius saving lots of money. The issue is that I woke up and I have no idea what did i buy, is this just subwoofer and i need 2x 3way crossover+tweeter and midrange now?Or is it actually what it says in first words and it is full range and i do not need to spend 3x more money now to make it work. I never made speakers before so I can not tell by just looking at them. If you do not want to go to the link, the item does say "AIYIMA 2Pcs 2 Inch 4Ohm 5W hifi Full Range Speaker Mini Woofer Speakers Audio Subwoofer Loudspeaker Home Threater DIY" If it is just subwoofer, do i need tweeter and 2 2 way crossovers (if i want to be cheap) https://www.aliexpress.com/item/32762083515.htmlNow looking at the pc version of the webpage it does also say: With a standard mode sound mode and a two-way audio crossover, these speakers deliver a crisp and balanced sound across a wide range of frequenciesNot really clearing up anything for me.I'll make the shell out of solid wood that is gonna be easy but I'm confused as to what do i need when it comes to components, thanks for helping me out.
>>107707157>buying the molds after they've ran through making thousands of them and they get worn out and then using them to make low quality versions?I would go with this one, Turks are doing something similar with their copy of MP5s, HK had factory there but they left machines most likely.

I got sick over Christmas and have spent some hours watching podcasts with Ilya Sutskever talking about artificial superintelligence (ASI). Unlike the rest of Silicon Valley who seem only to focus on GenAI/LLMs and talk about AGI/ASI to milk funding from venture capitalists who want to replace all workers with robot slaves and/or scare politicians into thinking we're in some kind of arm's race with China and get defense funding, this nigga actually seems to genuinely believe in it.BUT his visions for the future are genuinely scary: He visions "continent-sized AIs" where modern nations are basically gone/replaced by some unified, globohomo super state that ensures "value-alignment" and transhumans that "become part of the AI in order to control it".My question is: If he (and people working with him at SSI) genuinely believe in that, why the fuck do they want that? I mean, I get Sam Altman and the other hype makers that just want money, I'm talking about the Silicon Valley people that seem to genuinely believe we are on the path to superintelligent AI.I don't want to hear about Roko's basilisk, that meme is silly.
