The upgraded type system is a big part of why C++ became popular and some of the best improvements in languages are because of the auto checking types can do. You already need guard statements with types because of the ability to declare them null. Those statements become much more verbose when you don't even get type guarantees and waste more time at runtime when they could be filtered at compile time.

Personally, I don't like the categorization of "C/C++ replacement". Modern C++ is enormously complex and, when used idiomatically, looks very different from C. That's why I see Rust and Zig as filling different niches. Rust is a C++ replacement, an already very complex language with extra features being added each version. Zig is a C replacement, a simpler language focused on manual control.
I like many things about Rust, like the trait syntax and sum types, but I'm not completely sold on the borrow checker. But the real reason I avoid the language is social. The community is full of deranged ideological shill types. I don't mean flooding formerly technical forums with leftist politics and getting people who object canceled, though they do that too. yazi config changes too often. i've been running my own fork for a while and disabled the annoying daemon. overall it feels nice, but it lacks way too many features that ranger had. it recently got tabs but they aren't fully integrated afaik.

it suffers from the same issue as ranger, if you try to open a fuse filesystem (through jmtpfs or samba/ssh), it will try to preview every images and videos which will quickly cause the filsystem to overload and become unusable.
your only option is then to sigkill the yazi daemon and client. it's still missing proper shell support (e.g run yazi commands directly inside yazi) and other stuffs like :filter or @ that made ranger so nice to use. although being able to build plugins as object is really nice
