bought this 8 drive JBOD enclosure to replace shitty ass proprietary Synology DS 220+ (4TB RAID 1). I want to start with 4 larger drives in RAID6 on my new array but the NAS drive prices and making me hesitate. 4 16TB Ironwolf drives at $300 would be $1200... considering the enclosure ($450) plus some mini PC to to handle software RAID ($150), thats around $1800. is that a reasonable amount to pay for a setup w 32TB of RAID6 storage? anybody else have a similar setup?
>>106465571This looks so uncomfy
>>106465853Cool what what the fuck are you actually hosting with that setup that you wouldn't be better off having hosted in a data centre?
Why don't linux systems protect themselves against malware?Security by obscurity is the dumbest shit ever.
>>106498805Not nearly the same thing lmfao. MacOS "SIP" is also known as "rootless" mode, which is a much better name because it explains what it actually does. It restricts the root account to the point it can't do shit. Can't change system files, can't debug system processes, can't load/unload kernel extensions, can't use library preloading to code inject. The whole of /usr (and other system directories) becomes read-only permanently and there's no way to remount it as read/write while the OS is running. The only way to disable SIP is to reboot to recovery mode, to prevent someone from compromising root account and just disabling it.Meanwhile on nearly every Linux distro, root can modify system directories like /bin and /usr, load arbitrary kernel modules, read/write kernel memory, or just kexec and replace the entire kernel. What a shitshow. No wonder no one takes that clown OS as a desktop seriously.

I just tried to swap out my old RAM kit https://www.newegg.com/a-tech-256gb/p/1X5-006W-003E6with this https://www.newegg.com/a-tech-512gb/p/1X5-006W-000J5and now it stalls at "0xAD - DXE_READY_TO_BOOT" and does not ever go further. The motherboard is an asrock romed8-2t. The old RAM worked just fine. Anyone have any ideas? The board supposedly supports LRDIMMs in addition to RDIMMs, so that shouldn't be the problem.
>>106508286So this was the result running the 1080p extreme benchmark. Slightly smaller gap of 26ish degrees Celsius. Anything to worry about here if I am not having any stability or performance issues? I am pretty new to this whole thing. I read on reddit that more than 20 degree delta is bad but no one ever really explained why so I am not sure if they are repeating what they heard or if the delta itself actually matters for whatever reason as long as the max hot spot temp isn't insane ( correct me if I am wrong but 85.9 on a hotspot during a benchmark isn't awful? )
>>106508449It seems fine, I would learn how to undervolt it to keep it running a bit cooler.https://youtu.be/naBqsSfGX3A
