Jokes aside, What's the actual status of NixOS as as a desktop?
Is it viable?
>>

It's the same KDE/systemd desktop you find everywhere else. Do you think that's viable?
>>

It's for servers
Most desktop packages like game launchers for ex. are broken and you either can't install them or they won't launch

Everything is already from China, but here we discuss the cheap chink shit you see on various sites.

by the way, here are the two chip models i was thinking about: mxl86280 and rtl8372. its probably one of the two

>>107560954
oh damn, right as i was writing this reply, thanks for the pic.
i see a ram chip right next to the larger heatsink, looks like this is a completly different design, probably a main controller running some sort os and handling all the 10gb ports
(4 exposed to the outside as sfp and 2 more internal, one for each "slave" chip). main controller is probably a qualcomm chip. the smaller ones might still be the realtek chips, but there is still one 10g connection missing on each so idk.
nice that it has the built in psu. most of these cheap switches have an external 12v power brick.
there is also a bunch of unpopulated headers near the 8p8c connetion block, those might be for poe variant. searching for that model number of the pcb online only leads me to
https://www.xilinet.com/2025/05/13/advancements-in-medical-devices-enhancing-healthcare-around-the-globe-4/
with claims of a 250w poe version (jesus chang christ, that would be 30w on each port!)
i really like how most of the pcb is nicelly labeled, the voltage rails and even the uart chip is indicated.
how is the managment software like? some stuff on the website above claims to be gpl compliant, so is it some openwrt variant/fork?

Is any of this really a surprise anymore?
I seem to recall something about them supposedly (re)committing themselves to focusing on stability and performance once again; or so they claim anyway.
I really want to know what the heck they even do anymore because it's certainly not programming that's for damn sure.
the older versions of windows would bsod way more don't get me wrong but it feels like we've traded stability for a different type of instability.

How? I thought only grunt work wagies did this. Though over here all stores are closed on Christmas (except maybe fully paki-owned and paki-run ones that don't care) and even garbage collection is shifted over the holidays. Listen up, OP. The easy energy is gone. For a little while, humans found dense fuel that built up over millions of years - coal, oil, gas. You put in a tiny bit of work and got a fuckton of energy back. That extra energy paid for everything cool: big cities, planes, cheap food, neetbux, video, hookups, conventions, all the shit people cry about losing now. That surplus is drying up fast. What's left is harder to get: deeper wells, fracking, tar sands. Every new barrel costs more energy to pull out than the last one did. Regular oil (the good stuff) already peaked years ago. We're faking it with expensive low-quality crap that barely breaks even. Soon there won't be enough spare energy for anything fun. Planes too expensive. no travel. cons and meetups die. No more welfare or neetbux, everyone being slave just to eat. People get "apathetic" because the energy budget is shrinking and the body/brain correctly stops wasting calories on hopeless bullshit. This isn't because people are weak or society is degenerate. It's just physics. Living things blow up when there's a huge energy pile to burn, then crash when it's gone. We got a one-time jackpot of ancient sunlight. Jackpot almost empty now. No voting, no "just work harder", "get off the internet retard" "explore our passions and indulge in our hobbies in the good old way" fixes it. Solar and wind are weak diffuse shit. they can't give you back the giant surplus that built the modern world. The graph hit the top, now going down. We're past the top. Everything that needed extra energy vanishes quietly. just less and less until it's gone. The good times weren't forever. Account at zero soon. hopes/dreams stop. That's it.

Can't compare because I started with Vulkan 2 months ago without any prior experience in any graphics API.

What I can say is that with newer versions it's a lot easier to make it sane programming instead of whatever archaic mess it used to be before. E.g. VkDeviceAddress.
>>
>>107558400
>>107558515
Africa does not allow Vulkan because it requires new, expensive GPUs.
Also Vulkan requires 5000 lines of boilerplate code just to draw a single triangle.
>>
>>107558515
Wtf when did they release Vulkan 2?

>Chud, what is the use of making a video game if you don't know the tech behind it? I mean what made games awesome? We already had movies for example. The games were, and still are, black magic of computer graphics and computer tech in general. The real value of a game is always based on the value of video game technology.

I do know the tech behind it though, I actually know how to thoroughly use the engine (actually 2 engines at this point) and have no issues doing most of the work. It's the real technical code that requires actual talent and long term skill that I struggle at. Nothing is black magic, I just have trouble getting myself to learn to that skill level.

8GB hasn't been above ramlet status for at least a decade. 16GB is a comfortable minimum, and 32GB is for when you want a little extra. 64GB is tryhard, but not to the point of excess. 128GB is for if you run a server or do gens or whatnot.
