>dude Tailscale is like, what the internet was supposed to be>connect to your self-hosted spotify clone and shake out the last bit of dependence from big tech, just sign up for a Tailscale account for SSO, that's all you have to do. No you can't use e-mail, you have to use a third-party account like a Google or Microsoft account. Is self-hosting Headscale feasible?
>>107012736you need like a 1$€ VPS with a public ip. It's just a stun/tun server for wireguard.
>>107012736Is this true? Everyone who's bragging about having a home server and tailscale is actually dependent on google and microsoft?
I don't care about this because I am not a pedophile
>>107012855Yes. Tailscale is the ultimate grift for homelab boomers. They re-sell wireguard to people and require you to authenticate with big tech to do it.
>>107012736Yes but at that point you can just use wireguard directly >>107012855Yes if you wanna access your stuff remote

>>107010656>id preffer using buttons thoZigbee buttons exist and can be mapped to actions or scenes. You can think of them as push buttons that have a coincell battery and you can decide what they do. I have two in my room for example, one near my desk and one near my bed. Pressing them toggles between the "chill" scene (all lights warm and at about a third brightness) and off. It's nice for when you don't want to have to use your phone for everything. They are battery powered so they don't last forever, but zigbee devices are very power efficient, so they last a long time before needing new batteries. (Exactly how long it takes depends on the device, but I haven't had to change any batteries about a year in yet). Two words of warning: Some of the ultra cheap zigbee devices have shit firmware, which can cause them to "lock up" after pairing to one network, making a reset hard to impossible. That's arguably the makers fault not the technology/standards, but it is worth considering. Also because zigbee is slightly more expensive than wifi, there's a lot of """zigbee""" listings that upon further looking aren't zigbee at all, especially in the smart plug category.I suppose that's the price you pay for them being the cheapest usually.

a few threads ago i posted i bought a shower hose and i said it was good.it's not good.the fitting on one end rusted. the rest is fine. no rust.classic case of getting 90% there and then giving up at the last mile.
>>106994745pretty much this: >>107006411If you pay attention to the labeling on this shit and actually understand what the symbols mean, you'll frequently see symbols that make no sense for the product or are obviously untrue, like a double-insulated symbol for something with exposed metal. They just put as many symbols as will fit, and they'll just make up symbols if there's still room on the label. I think they think it makes the product look more professional, like the ubiquitous "QA OK" glitter stickers on everything.
>>107012898Yeah, shower hoses are kind of a crap shoot. Ideally you want something stainless, but chinks lie about that all the time. I bought some "304" SS pipes the other day, they're blatantly just regular steel.
So what's the best Xorg desktop environment for Arch Linux? I'm a chud btw.
>>107011848>hyprlandOP wants Xorg. As an aside, Wayland still plays very poorly with lots of "enterprise" memes like VSCode. While it's possible to get it working, you're going to suffer in the process.
>>107011840xfce of course
Xfce or CinnamonI used to like MATE but I don't think that's even in active development anymore, is it?Cinnamon might not have the best defaults given it's not where it belongs (Mint). But I preferred it.Xfce is snappy. There was an update where they pushed some changes to Thunar about 2 years ago that made me like it a lot. Like they actually bothered to update the thing. It's a shame that I can't go back to x11. A true shame.
>>107011840MATE. XFCE runs like garbage
>>107011840What is next going back to use candles? What about horses instead of cars? Wayland might not be perfect but even a bad solution can get us closer to have a good graphical server compositor architecture stack.

Considering switching from iOS to Grapheneos, but came across Louis Rossman's video [1] about the threats GOS founder Daniel Micay made against him. Also found on Louis website claims that all GOS statements of Micay stepping down have been scrubbed [2].Can GOS be trusted with Micay or is this secure/open enough that GOS is safe irregardless of leadership (Micay's twitter profile indicates he's still involved [3])? Am I focusing on irrelevant details in what is often considered a good secure/private phone-OS?[1]https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4To-F6W1NT0[2]https://privatephoneshop.com/why-we-no-longer-sell-phones-with-grapheneos/[3]https://x.com/DanielMicay/

I have been waiting for years for there to finally be a midrange foldable phone (available in the US) with a full functional front screen, and I'm pretty happy with the razr 2024 for $350USD. Not the fastest but the dimensity 7300 is more than enough to be usable, screen is ok, camera is ok, but they are all good enough for me to really like the phone. Hinge design is sleek and I like the "iPhone 6 but more vertical" look it has when folded out.

>>107011880For me, workflow. For some reason (probably tech debt) windows still hardcodes tons of UI shit and has very limited extendability. If I want six desktops loaded and to be able to switch between them with super+[num], I can't set it up easily in windows. If I want tiling... nope, nothing that's anything more than a high-level userspace script is available. With Linux, I can set up my UI exactly how I want it. My hands hurt less after a day spent working on KDE, and I have to take my hands off my keyboard less.
I just want to use my computer the way I want, without the OS constantly getting in the way
Is there any actual point for glossy screen monitors to exist?I've never seen any actual benefit from this, all they do is cause glaring. Even when LCD monitors first started coming out, they all had a matte finish to reduce this glaring problem that smooth glass CRTs also had. The same goes with TVs, there is no need for them to have a glossy screen either.
>>107011448>glossyso you get all the brightness from the display and it reflects all the brightness in the room too
>>107011448Why would I want a visually obstructive layer blocking and refracting the oncoming light? Just buy a brighter panel to drown-out reflections.
