I have an m1 mac mini and I'm interested in upgrading to the m4. That 8gb of ram and better CPU would be so nice. I like the apple eco system, I can even use my phone as a webcam / microphone for zoom meetings. Macs have a lot of useful tools and a unix shell.

If all I'm doing is programming (mainly native app development in swift/kotlin), is there even a better computer I can get? I can get an m4 mac mini for $509 refurbished. For how fast it is--that's one hell of a deal!
>>
>>106485231
No, go for it if you like it for other reasons too.
>>
>>106485231
>an m4 mac mini for $509 refurbished.

it really can't be beat for price/perf. be sure to buy it from the official apple refurb shop. it's $470 for a refurb unit which is apple recertified and comes with a full one year warranty.
>>
>>106485378
Yeah, I bought my current m1 refurbished through the official store. It's a great place.
>>
nah mini is the best value by a wide margin. maybe beelink if you needed more ram/gpu capabilities later on, but the price gap is too much for just programming
>>
Beelink SER8 is 1TB / 32GB ram / 8845HS, exact same form factor, $500 new. On Arch Linux just watching shows and coding the watt usage is like 3-8 watts it's crazy fast. If you must get Apple shit then get the mini. Performance is about the same.

When you really need to tighten the belt hardware-wise its fine otherwise linux has better capability when you run freebsd on a server even, you have to consider all the software you will run on it if you cant plan the future stick with a good linux distro

once again, I am not including the links because none of that shit fucking matters. If you didn't hold a job before 2022, you are sinking and/or dead. There are talks of an AI bubble hiring hasn't gone across the board, and the outsourcing numbers are still increasing. Trump is beefing w/ Modi, so maybe H-1Bs could be on the chopping block soon who knows

I have never used 1337code to get a job in this industry. During my last job search of 2021-2022, I remember getting a timed 1337code style PHP interview.....I remember how anxious I was in getting these four questions right (which I did), only to never even speak to anyone at the company. I promised myself in the 2010s I would never learn React or do 1337code. I always knew 1337code was going to be a cancer, but pre-pandemic, it was limited to FAGMAN companies I could ignore...but with the supply of new grads post-2017, who "drank the kool-aid" and didn't get to experience post-great recession tech culture (buttcoins on /g/, Steve Jobs still being alive, being in your early 20s and actually being friends with your co-workers while building shit and getting rich), the cancer culture of 1337code would permeate the industry because college kids are cucks

Pros:
>Strong sandboxing/isolation improves security.
>Widely supported across major distros (especially Fedora, GNOME-based distros).
>Uses Portals apps can request access to files, devices, etc. in a controlled way.
>Good integration with desktop environments.
>Flathub is a central, well-maintained app store with lots of apps.
>Auto-updates supported.

Cons:
>Flatseal has the potential to change the permissions of other flatpaks at will. Essentially, a flatpak with the ability to change the permissions of other flatpaks. It is rendered to be "Potentially Unsafe" with "Arbitrary Permissions" with access to "User Data" subfolder flatpak/overrides, Can read and write all data in the directory" and "Arbitrary Permissions, Can acquire arbitrary permissions".
>Larger disk space usage (apps bundle runtimes + libraries).
>Slower startup compared to native apps (sandbox overhead).
>Strong desktop focus not ideal for CLI/server software.
>Relies heavily on Flathub (centralization concern).

They don't. Plenty of them are cheap from oust car wrecks.
You buy a used car get used battery. Leafs are less than 8k.
You can also just use safer lifepo4 batteries in the trunk.
>>
>>106485061
>The cooling of the battery is irrelevant unless there's some dumb fuck that uses fast charging stations while already driving, multiple times a day, instead of charging at your home.

The problem is the range is also poor.
So you will need to charge multiple times a day on a long trip.
And not cooling the battery during fast charge kills it, reducing range even more.

If you ONLY use it to commute it's alright but if you ever go on holiday there are much better options like from Hyundai/Kia.

Nissan forgot to innovate and are stuck in 2010 forever.
>>
>>106485253
they don't have to innovate, japanese EVs are built to be disposable since nobody keeps their cars older than 3 years thanks to the shaken
>>
EVs as a concept are a non-starter if you're not a homeowner with the ability to provide 240V charging in your garage, anyone else has to deal with trickle chargers hanging down from their apartment or power cords leading to the street where their EV is parked.
>>
>>106485276
>they don't have to innovate
EV's are developing incredibly fast.
If they don't innovate they won't be selling many cars in the near future.

And it's sad because I like Japanese cars but I don't see how companies like Nissan and Toyota can still exist 20 years from now.

Anyone else intimidated by just how much tech there is out there these days? Maybe I was ignorant about it for a long time, but these days everything feels overwhelming. Whether it's hardware, software (extensions, apps, scripts, gits, sites), video games, AIs for every task imaginable... I used to just bookmark stuff, these days I feel like drawing some weird 4D map just to keep track of all the stuff I'm interested in.

Yeah, but in order to find the quality stuff you need to go through a lot of slop. Even so, there's a lot of genuinely good tech being made.
