Linus himself as said that if BSD wasn't in the legal situation it was in the early 90s he would have never made his kernel. What do you think the world would be like if BSD was being used for supercomputers and android and /g/ rather than linux? Would Free/Open/Dragonfly/NetBSD still exist or would eveyone just be using 4.3BSD/386BSD?

READ THE (temp)WIKI! & help by contributing:

/hsg/ is about learning and expanding your horizons. Know all about NAS? Learn virtualization. Spun up some VMs? Learn about networking by standing up a OPNsense/PFsense box and configuring some VLANs. There's always more to learn and chances to grow. Think you’re god-tier already? Setup OpenStack and report back.

>What software should I run?
Install Gentoo. Or whatever flavor of *nix is best for the job or most comfy for you. Jellyfin/Emby/Plex to replace Netflix, Nextcloud to replace Googlel, Ampache/Navidrome to replace Spotify, the list goes on. Look at the awesome self-hosted list and ask.

>Why should I have a home server?
De-botnet your life. Learn something new. Serving applications to yourself, your family, and your frens feels good. Put your tech skills to good use for yourself and those close to you. Set a static ip on all of the ports make it 10.0.0.0, or 192.168.1.0. Whichever one your main network isn't. They should be able to communicate if you set them up on the same network like that. I've only done it with two computers, but I don't see why it wouldn't work with more computers and a switch.

Static IPs like 10.10.0.1/24, 10.10.0.2/24 etc. should reach each other with the switch, for internet connection they'd need to have some route the parents wifi network and have the wifi router as default gateway.

With btrfs the procedure is almost always backup & reformat except for certain trivial errors. Repairing filesystems is a bad strategy in general if you care about not losing data.

In your case it sounds like you want to backup and do an extended self-test on the drive and see if it's even worth keeping.

nope, doesn't appear to when trying different monitors.
>You can still manually add custom modes to Xorg.conf (won't work for the experimental Wayland session though and since the Mint Devs are shit at building a compositor the only option there is making a custom EDID and passing it to the kernel command line).
would it be easier/better to just use debian instead of mint and install something like amdgpu-pro if I want to play games at maximum monitor refresh rate, freesync enabled, full hdr, etc...?

We're at the point where Lenovo has removed the 7-row layout, swapped fn/ctrl, changed the lid shape, removed the roll-cage, removed socketed CPUs, removed the lid latch, started soldering memory, started soldering wifi, dropped the combination NVME/2.5" bay, and dropped RJ45.
And every fucking step of the way, going right back to posting on /prog/, I've watched thinkpad posters go through the "old good, new bad (until it's cheap on ebay)" cycle annually.

Needing some advice on music players for Linux. Running Antergos. Installed a few, and so far the only viable option is Audacious, but it is missing some creature comforts that I got with foobar. Most importantly, I want one that will support some sort of convolver, since I have impulse waveforms for all of my cans. I am using a Schiit stack to play everything. Anyone have any recommended players?

The last time i was on fedora I tried every single music player they had available on their store or whatever it's called. Literally all of them were horrific compared to foobar2k, most would just bug out for no reason, but i think some were abandoned anyways.
All I wanted was my foobar2k ui where the left side is my library selector from file location and the center is a library directed by the prior. It seemed the programs that could sort file location would just put everything into a massive file that was sorted by file location but not in a tree system, so it was dramatically worse.
I probably didn't explain it well enough if you don't already use a similiar system on foobar but literally every other program i could abandon on windows for linux but foobar2k

is there any player that sorts by genre > band > album?
I spent years sorting all my music on windows, every player I tried on linux only sorts by band or band and album
I can't remember the name of a million different bands and albums, it's easier to just find them by genre, but when you do sort by genre it just throws them all together, when I want to listing to a whole album

"Empty" likely means no components but the footprints and solder points exist.
DRAM packages are standardized per JEDEC specifications.
You can design and order PCBs meant specifically for DDR4/DDR5 and solder any available DRAM

This is viable if you are a neet with too much time but if you have a decent job the time it takes you to make these, you could buy 5 RAM sticks from the money you make.

>omg muscovy developing its own RAM!!1
Russians actually have some RAM chips production. But it stuck on DDR4 level.

They have developed their own chips for DDR5 (DDR5 К1661PП1BЯ), but it's not in production yet.

Actually while I was making this post, I've searched info on these chips. Turned out, they've used some RockChip chips instead of developing fully their own.

thanks i would get a connector desu but i just want this out of the way today and don't want to wait for a connector to be delivered

i don't mind giving it a go, i just don't want to permakill either strip so wonder what i need to check first. it looks simple but I figured I'd check. It's just the small size throwing me off.
I'm going to just tin the pads on the left, line them up with the right and then heat it a little and hope that does the trick.
Any tips on keeping both strips straight and aligned though?

There is zero reason for Europe to honor those patents. It's detrimental for its own industry to do so.

i buy one when i need one, and i dont bother buying one new or having anxiety about them being faster next year. in 2020 i had a thinkpad R60 with xp on it, everyone started pushing zoom and teams with lots of remote desktops, aws, etc that wasnt going to work with XP. I installed 7 but it was getting pretty slow and the battery finally died. I could have bought a new laptop right there in august of 2021, spent thousands of dollars, and be practically where i am now. I looked at a bunch of benchmarks, 8th gen was the first major performance increase since ivy bridge, 9th gen didnt do much, 10th gen was a bit better but also new and expensive. I bought a latitude 5400 for somewhere around $300 and this year web browsers are starting to lag on it a lot. I go look again, 11th gen, iris Xe, its attractive, but they're all quad cores, 12th gen is way better. I look at those laptops, and price out 13th gen too, 13th is significantly more expensive without being much faster, but in this case alone the 7640 is a much better chassis than a 7530, I'll be buying one i like for about $350-400 and use it for another 3-5 years. I can bitch about how its not my problem web developers are retards making needlessly bloated horse shit and be right all day and it wont fix my problem. computers are a subscription service and you have to weed through loads of shit to pay less
