It was for me. I printed enough Gridfinity bins for my current assortment of batteries. It's been nice having them easily accessible and neat.

Selfhosted GitHub Actions will become paywalled in 3 months.
Your CI/CD pipeline that runs on your own selfhosted hardware will become a paid feature thanks to M$.
Now anons, will you switch to Forgejo Actions? Will you selfhost your own git forge?

A spinlock written in shell. According to MS engineers, aka Copilot, that's the best solution to a generic 'wait for N seconds' in shell for build scripts.

makefiles can do anything bash scripts can do. zillions of projects have a make test target.

Azure DevOps has NO limits on git LFS storage and costs $15 per extra (one is free) self-hosted CI/CD parallel job with unlimited minutes

yet you still suck github dick

Macs are going to be the best value computers from now on. You should be buying a Mac Studio with an M4 Max instead of building a desktop PC.

I've actually recently considered buying a Mac Mini at some point just to use Mac OS and to possibly replace my Windows desktop (nothing will ever replace my Linux laptop).
I really would want an iMac but I already have an OLED monitor that would give a better picture than the iMac would.
The biggest issue for me is as >>107570852
pointed out, the storage memory configurations are a joke. 512GB should really be the base on a new computer period with 1tb being my personal minimum.

>>107569731
Of course they are, their customers are already used to paying several times more than what the actual hardware costs

I've got a new MacBook M4 as a gift but I really wanted to run Gentoo. What should I do?

I guess I'm locking in with homebrew apps until I can get a sort of Linuxy desktop experience with Window managers and stuff.

These are CPUs that run as fast as an analog circuit for the most part. They don't clock and step with other CPUs except for specialized purposes like IO. They are of course a million times faster and use a fraction of the electricity.

This needs theoretical breakthroughs that you would've heard about. All things being perfect async is supposed to be 10x faster, but we don't know how to make it faster at all for anything general purpose.

Wow, it's almost as if dedicated hardware is really fast compared to general purpose CPUs

Hopefully Spooknik also figures out his unofficial chroma nunchaku implementation.

/hsg/ is about learning and expanding your horizons. Know all about NAS? Learn virtualization. Spun up some VMs? Learn about networking by standing up a OPNsense/PFsense box and configuring some VLANs. There's always more to learn and chances to grow. Think you’re god-tier already? Setup OpenStack and report back.

>What software should I run?
Install Gentoo. Or whatever flavor of *nix is best for the job or most comfy for you. Jellyfin/Emby/Plex to replace Netflix, Nextcloud to replace Googlel, Ampache/Navidrome to replace Spotify, the list goes on. Look at the awesome self-hosted list and ask.

>Why should I have a home server?
De-botnet your life. Learn something new. Serving applications to yourself, your family, and your frens feels good. Put your tech skills to good use for yourself and those close to you. Store their data with proper availability redundancy and backups and serve it back to them with a /comfy/ easy to use interface.

I want to but the stupid ONT and router are in the basement. I only have verizon's gay extender upstairs. I even bought this thing and a used optiplex
https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0CP7S3117
I rent this house and I'm probably moving in a few months so I'd rather not go through the effort of putting an ethernet cable through the wall.
>>
I'm trying to get into PoE, first for a few devices I have that support it, and then for cameras.
I wanted at least 2.5gb because my Omada wifi point would be getting PoE from it too.
I'm also thinking to make it managed so I can set any cameras onto their own VLAN for security purposes.
Anybody have recommendations that keep to those? I've already found a few decent looking ones on Amazon, but maybe there's a blind spot.

>get r710 for almost free

>don't need hardware RAID, gonna just use all disks as one big logical partition, it's all SSD's anyways
>came with fucking PERC 6/i, doesn't support showing disks directly to OS, have to have RAID
>apparently only workaround is to have each disk be it's own RAID
>according to interwebs, this will also fuck your read and write speeds
>want to get a HBA that supports JBOD
>the ones supported by this hardware all lack a cache, which also kills write speeds according to interwebs
>most popular card is the H200, which has no cache
I'm getting mixed signals here. Am I better off RAID-ing every individual drive seperately and then letting the OS handle it, or getting a card that supports JBOD and losing the cache?
