I am addicted to my phone. If I could throw it away I would but I need it. I want to replace it with a smart watch that can use Apple Pay (for the bus fare), take calls, download 2FA apps, and can’t download web browsers. Which one should I get?
>>
>>107605572
I was thinking of doing this but without cellular that is spyware and instead of a apple watch something like garmin which I believe can be used with no cloud shit just locally on my GNU+Linux computer and just tells time, tracks heart rate and runs and pace and thats it

+ a dumb phone

yeah this is the conclusion I came to too

Those RAM sticks you were looking at has now gone up from $300 to $3000? Who cares, just buy it. Why save? In 2026, AI is going to make you super wealthy like Elon Musk, so there's no need to save.

Buy what you want, right NOW!

Especially if you're eyeing a Tesla.

Plenty of things aren't scarce at all, like food. It's just being wasted because capitalists would rather throw away perfectly good food instead of giving it out for free. AI shenanigans will not change that. Isn't it interesting how Melon Husk and his peers tell you that a great post scarcity utopia is right around the corner while they're hoarding resources, money, and building doomsday bunkers?

In past there were phones, which were thinner than 6mm and still had audio jack. In fact , one as as thick as 4.8mm.

And needless to say 3.5mm would get in your way if you were to measure thickness at thinnest point. That would be fine when you had a camera or two protruding slightly not with those islands and peninsulas we have currently.

READ THE (temp)WIKI! & help by contributing:
https://igwiki.lyci.de/wiki/Home_server

/hsg/ is about learning and expanding your horizons. Know all about NAS? Learn virtualization. Spun up some VMs? Learn about networking by standing up a OPNsense/PFsense box and configuring some VLANs. There's always more to learn and chances to grow. Think you’re god-tier already? Setup OpenStack and report back.

>What software should I run?
Install Gentoo. Or whatever flavor of *nix is best for the job or most comfy for you. Jellyfin/Emby/Plex to replace Netflix, Nextcloud to replace Googlel, Ampache/Navidrome to replace Spotify, the list goes on. Look at the awesome self-hosted list and ask.

>Why should I have a home server?
De-botnet your life. Learn something new. Serving applications to yourself, your family, and your frens feels good. Put your tech skills to good use for yourself and those close to you. Store their data with proper availability redundancy and backups and serve it back to them with a /comfy/ easy to use interface.

So, instead of running a 6-12 watt router 24/7 you'd rather run a 600+ watt desktop, let it be your router and do other things (do you virtualize your NAS on your own desktop lol?) and then come here and say your desktop is your "home server setup"

I'd think this was a shitpost but i'll give you the benefit of the doubt and guess that you rent and electricity isn't metered, and included in the cost. Or, you are living with your parents, there is a home router but you want to feel extra special with "muh private VM that routes things from my desktop is my router and my desktop is muh server"

Do you know how retarded this sounds? I have VMware Workstation on my desktop because I got a decent CPU and want to play with shit but i dont go around calling my desktop my server because its not my server, i put it to sleep when im done using it, meanwhile my actual servers run 24/7

If you are so smart and know so well what users want and need, why don't you band together and create the next big tech company?
You can fix all the UI issues that you hate.
You can deny AI slop.
You can choose not to hire Indians.

There are three? Danish, Italian, and Schuko. French have their own bullshit connector but Schuko connectors can mate with either the french standard or the german one.
Older commie era houses may also have non-recessed, unearthed plugs but those are compatible with both europlug and schuko (sans grounding).

Its a compromise. You don't want the voltage too high or it becomes excessively dangerous, 400-500v will fuck you up bad, whilst 230v is a lot less deadly. Lower voltages like 120v result in excessive current, or less power.

Used to be that I had to mess a lot with Linux to get a usable system and Windows just worked.
Now I have to mess with Chris Titus tool shit and microwin just to carve the trash out of windows and get something banal like a local account. All of that with the chance that a future feature update (which security updates are tied to now) reintroduces all of it or breaks things.
On the other end Linux just works, and thanks to proton, dxvk et al. this includes gaming.
