The original idea was that by buying old devices that still work well, and which have features that promote longevity like super modularity, you could sort of stick it to the man, and be less consumeristic. As of today, we literally buy new, expensive thinkpads that have soldered parts and are in all respects basically the same as any other slop, you may as well get a macbook.
