Why is it so hard to not feed the troll (1)?
>>
>>107853793
Depends which one but I can see anons wanting to die on certains hills because it's amusing. Like AVIF isn't really even a separate image format built from the ground up like JXL, it's more of a sloppy by-product of AV1. Yet despite being a slop format it works unusually well because it can piggy back on AV1 hardware decoding.

Meanwhile JXL assumes all of that isn't as important as being the best at compressing certain types of images.
>>
>>107853928
Brother in Christ, do you have no self awareness at all?
>>
>>107854137
That's the objective truth as far as I can tell. AVIF is dead on arrival without AV1 hardware acceleration.

>Anybody ever programmed in C on a big endian architecture?
I haven't, but...

Cppreference mentions:
>The other data members are intended to be allocated in the same bytes as part of that largest member. The details of that allocation are implementation-defined, except that all non-static data members have the same address.
I believe that should answer you question regardless of architecture. Assuming a compliant compiler.

They also go on to mention
>It is undefined behavior to read from the member of the union that wasn't most recently written. Many compilers implement, as a non-standard language extension, the ability to read inactive members of a union.
which might be worth being aware of.
>>
>>107854074
>Anybody ever programmed in C on a big endian architecture?
Not for a few years, but yes.
>I'm wondering if &value.u8 == &value.u16 == &value.u32 == &value.64
IIRC, yes. It was like that on the big endian platforms I used (UltraSPARC most recently).

Scanning an array of a few hundred rectangular coordinates to determine which a point is in doesn't take that long, and that would be a total outlier of a GUI layout. Usually there's a lot of recursive decomposition going on behind the scenes, which makes everything much faster.
The trick is that that array scan is pretty damn cache friendly.
>>
>>107849744
ok, then benchmark it.
overall, if rendering takes 1000x more time than a collision check (mainly due to drawing text being quiet expensive), you will not be able to handle enough UI elements before a brute force collision check becomes a problem.
you are not going to use raw inputs for UI, it's purely for 3D mouse look.
you wont have many elements.
if you had a lot of elements, you should look at imgui, because to me it sounds like you are making a debug tool or editor.

Other than for storing videos and photos taken with your phone, is there a reason to even need more than 256GB on a phone? People with more than 256GB, what do you use your extra capacity for not including the videos and photos you take with it?

I film a lot of local rallies (as in rally racing) and take hundreds of pictures during a weekend during that. Especially filming in 4k/60fps/hdr takes up tons of space.
Plus the 200+ gb of music I have on my phone.
So yeah, I need A LOT more than that.
My S25 Ultra has 1tb in it and I constantly reach the point where I have to transfer stuff to my drives at home and delete stuff to not run out of space.
>>
>>107848935
I got more than 500gb of asmr videos on my phone. So yep. I don't care about thickness of the phone, camera, how much ram it has or how many hz the display is.

why are they constantly changing shit? will there ever be a point in which design philosophy of tech/webdesign returns to lightweight and simple? there is so much fucking java going on. youtube uses half a fucking gb just in the background. paused.
>>
>>107853838
I think the thumbnail change is because more and more people are watching youtube from their TVs. Youtube should make a dedicated TV interface instead of making the experience worse for desktop users, but it's probably too much to ask for a tech giant like google.
>>
>>107853910
yea, its kind of fucking ridiculous. I keep youtube zoomed out to like, 67-75% on desktop
>>
>>107853838
No tech company should ever hire design/UX people, they should always be contractors. Otherwise they need to keep constantly changing shit for the sake of change, to justify their jobs.
Unless they have managers/supervisors who are aware of this concern and keep the designshitters on tight leashes, but manager types are almost always clueless.

#define __NR_mmap                9

this is probably my favorite syscall of all time. we could spend weeks discussing this alone. it is extremely powerful, versatile, and widely used. not to mention, it's one of the (somewhat) rare six argument syscalls. some potential points of discussion:
> the addr argument, and its use without flags, with MAP_FIXED, and with MAP_FIXED_NOREPLACE
> file-backed vs anonymous mappings
> the concept of pages, page sizing, and alignment
> guard pages and PROT_NONE
> the actual meaning of SIGSEGV, and how there's more to segfaults than simply process crashes
> core dumps and stack traces
> other related signals, such as SIGBUS
> MAP_GROWSDOWN and the stack
> the use of mmap (as opposed to brk) for allocation via the *alloc family
> manual memory management vs an allocation scheme

Multics did have a high-level stream-based I/O interface that could also abstract over files and AIUI virtual memory was so difficult on the early Unix hardware that they didn't have it until Bill Joy brought over some BSD tapes. It makes sense that they went with streams as a primitive even without the worse is better boogeyman.
>>
>>107848169
i mean, if you're having issues with malloc, you're probably going to have issues with mmap, too

Because it's the complete antithesis of the UNIX philosophy. It's a Worse is Better imitation of a feature from better operating systems.
