READ THE (temp)WIKI! & help by contributing:
https://igwiki.lyci.de/wiki/Home_server

/hsg/ is about learning and expanding your horizons. Know all about NAS? Learn virtualization. Spun up some VMs? Learn about networking by standing up a OPNsense/PFsense box and configuring some VLANs. There's always more to learn and chances to grow. Think you’re god-tier already? Setup OpenStack and report back.

>What software should I run?
Install Gentoo. Or whatever flavor of *nix is best for the job or most comfy for you. Jellyfin/Emby/Plex to replace Netflix, Nextcloud to replace Googlel, Ampache/Navidrome to replace Spotify, the list goes on. Look at the awesome self-hosted list and ask.

>Why should I have a home server?
De-botnet your life. Learn something new. Serving applications to yourself, your family, and your frens feels good. Put your tech skills to good use for yourself and those close to you. Store their data with proper availability redundancy and backups and serve it back to them with a /comfy/ easy to use interface.

GPL is anti AI, but the retards at the FSF won't enforce it. If I copy code from GPL software I can't get sued and forced to open source my shit, but if AI copies from GPL software its totally fine because nobody sues and anyone in big tech is above the law. The only license that stops AI is proprietary because they can't slurp what isn't public.

So, I recently switched back to Gentoo after spending the last 10 years on Debian.
I currently am running the hardened musl profile, wayland only, -O2, pie.

I was looking at the wiki and see that LibreSSL in gentoo is deprecated, except in an overlay. And there seems to be an opinion thag LibreSSL is mostly unmeeded nowadays.

What do you think? The most common weakpoint is usually a web browser in security, it's the most attacked one, and firefox is compiled against NSS, (neither Libre/OpenSSL).

Most of my shit runs in rootless podman alpine containers, too...
>>
It's not worth it to hunt for patches to make things compile with LibreSSL.
>>
if you care this much about security just use qubes. btw firefox is considered less secure than chromium browsers.

have you considered getting a computer that isn't a total piece of shit instead? xfce works.

Im just now getting up to speed on the Atomic desktop versions of Fedora. It sounds interesting and I would like to give it a try but I noticed it doesnt seem to play well with dual booting on a shared disked. Anyone had success with these dual booting or should i just put it on its own disk and swap out?

>ebook and software
most ebook readers seem to be in gtk, arianna seems pretty bad, anyway, maybe inkscape should have been mentioned. It is undeniable that qt has more professional and standard software due to its powerful and cross-platform nature. theres also a lot of cool, tested and solid software in gtk; geany, stardict, claws-mail, gajim, homebank, gparted & liferea.
>the real issue
qt does a terrible job as a de (its best known de is known for crashing) while gtk is solid and simpler, that's why the best des are gtk. personally, I think qt is also better implemented in a gtk de, opinions of my own since i've only used kde and xfce.
>>
>>107807270

>>107808242
I wouldn't decide anything based on an ebook reader. Reading on the computer isn't ideal anyway. I would use ereader > tablet > phone in 99% of cases.

I've came to realize after endless distrohopping for years between my piece of shit laptop my and my desktop pc that there isn't a single distro out there that "just works", its just that some, like Mint, requiere so much less work to get something functional that it seems like nothing when compared to other distros.

google builds its own enterprise grade hardware for its own data centers anon, same with amazon. google, amazon and microsoft are the data center majors on the planet, nvdia is there because they supply google, amazon and microsoft with all the shit they don't make in house, and have most of the remaining market as well. amd competes with nvdia as a hardware vendor. this should suprise no one.

the x220 has a keyboard width of 286 mm, which is exactly like on a regular keyboard. the x270 has a smaller keyboard at 270 mm. what keyboards do current t14 or x13 models have?
>>
>>107806916
it will rune fine on 10+ years old ewaste if you give it enough ram and ssd.
if you want something recent t14 g1|g2 should be best bang for the buck.

okay I figured out that the t14 has normal sized keys, but the whole keyboard is not as wide because they shaved off a couple mm's on the right side, meaning the enter key and \| key aren't as large as on a typical keyboard

I bought an external hard drive, UPS needed 4 tries to deliver it because they tried to deliver it to a shop that's closed again and again until I called them and said to deliver it to my address. So it's been loaded and unloaded from the tuck 4 times and probably been thrown a lot. The outer box is visibly dented. Should I send it back? It does have 4 year warranty though.

I've bought $10 500GB HDDs from eBay, and none have failed me yet. I scanned them through Crystal Disk Info, and they all came out fine--last time I check, that is...

They're from e-waste recycling centers, and actually aren't that old. Don't know if that was a good deal or not though. Probably would've been better to buy at least a TB.
