literally. i checked during stocktaking season because I had to sign off that they physically exist under actual control of some real agent. some of them were literally not even connected to anything and when I asked about the ones that are, they turned out to not be actually running anything and are glorified POTS exchange racks with all the real actual servers files exist on being a kilometer or two up the road and everything higher level than a network switch are only still here because no one cares enough to spend the money on proper disposal.

also true, but your response should still basically be a healthy
>I may not be the best, but I'm good enough at what I do for someone to pay me for it
even if not, yes, that should be impetus to improve and strive to actually understand whatever it is you "pretend" to do

i myself joke a lot that I "pretend" to be in some position or do some thing, but it's only a joke because there is the kernel of truth that I do that thing at least competently enough to hold down a job; I may not be the best at it, but lawd do I try, and even if I didn't I'm at least good enough to help people

imo "imposter syndrome" is a symptom of Bullshit Jobs -- if you have a job where you never accomplish anything, obviously you're going to feel incompetent. any job you have, you should strive to, at the end of the day, have someone else's life made a little easier or maybe even happier

>Imposter syndrome happens when you believe rewards are based on merit but the system actually rewards something else.
I feel like someone clever would be able to just identify what people are being rewarded for and pivot to that.
I think imposter syndrome happens more when you have a few key conditions that follow from eachother
>success is either random or unclear for any reason (objectives are ill-defined and inherently not accomplishable, success is blocked in an unclear way, there is a general lack of feedback, etc)
>the sufferer is UNABLE rather than INCAPABLE of accomplishment
>the sufferer is able to identify that identification of accomplishment is impossible

someone actually competent but with arbitrary reward conditions is fucked but can at least identify their own skills; a woodworker asked to build an impossible shape can get upset about not being able to, but he can still build other things and maybe even reason out why the impossible shape is impossible.

but in tech, that's not the case -- objectives are often not well defined, and the entire field is inherently adversarial. It is very difficult to identify if you've done something at all, let alone "properly", and in many cases it's outright impossible for practical reasons, and for some few run into theoretical limits

imo, the best way to handle it is to just step off. if it works, it works. the only reason IT isn't blue collar is we don't work with anything that can kill you. That we can stave off middle managers with a bit of technobabble but then have to set up A/V gear a child should be able to should be a point of pride; it's annoying, but someone needs it done and whoever has to do it is the only one there who can do it right then and right there. It only seems so obvious to us because we've been doing it so long.

The one thing I try to do is take them through all the bullshit documents, try to establish at least the spirit of the thing so that where rules conflict, if they don't make sense, they can as a human reconcile it as best they can. And on my end, the main civilian-relevant thing I do is AD monkeying, which any retard can do. I have developed no useful skills. What few things I've learned to use are 30 years out of date. This is a thread for tech workers, I'm not sure why you're posting your uninformed outsider opinions here. Obviously agile isn't going to be used for nuclear/oil projects, it's for bizshit/webshit that can be iterated on continuously with little risk. It also has little to do with the pace of the projects.
>>
>>103131672
i was a tech worker back then, installation, support of autodesk cad suites and their workstations.
still, the point is that no engineer, should be doing something similar to agile, and in fact in the regulated engineering branch it would be directly illegal
>>
>>103131773
You do not understand software engineering or agile. Most changes to software are low risk and can be reverted immediately, that is where agile can be used effectively. It isn't intended for mission critical projects (aerospace, defense, medical, banking, infrastructure etc).

You will never be a real programmer. You have no commits, you have no pull requests, you have no public repos. You are a low IQ brown man twisted by an unearned comp sci degree and coding bootcamps into a crude mockery of nature's perfection.

All the “validation” you get is two-faced and from bots. Behind your back people say that you're a useless DEI hire. Your parents are disgusted and ashamed of you, your “tech bros” laugh at you behind closed doors.

Real programmers are utterly repulsed by you. Even devs who “pass” have no creative output and excessively verbose with techno buzzwords. Your GitHub profile is a dead giveaway, and even if you manage to score a 3 month internship at a tech company, a real company will turn tail and bolt the second they sees that you haven't completed any non school related projects.

You will never be happy. You cope by saying that your bullshit software is using a proprietary test framework so you can't open source it, but deep down you know it's because you don't want people to see your incompetence, and that the core of your software is actually an open source project which you're shamelessly profiting off.

Eventually it will be too much to bear. You'll buy a google gift card, a spoofed business phone number, and start scamming old people into redeeming.

This is your fate. This is what you chose. There is no turning back.

>they interview people with experience, good cv and references
>new guy comes
>doesnt even pretend to be working or intrested from day 1

Weirdly this happened 4 times this year. I dont know if this is very common elsewhere (but dont remember this happening in my other jobs), this company is cursed or hr is fucking up that bad, which is also weird because i never had a single problem during my hiring process. This place seems to attract these smart people for some reason.

Why this happen? Do these people have a second job? Even though, i just dont understand the point. Why destroy your reputation for a bit more of money for a couple months?

This is batantly stupid from them. Like these people come, dont do anything on purpose, dont even pretend to be working, skip all meetings, dont give a fuck, dont say sorry when called out... it is like they purposely want to be fired for some reason.

Even during a time worked in a place i hated, at least i cared and tried to do my best. I would disagree with my boss, explain to him a better way but say, yeah you want to do your way ok, at least i tried and then work anyway.
If you plan to act like a passive agresive children then just refuse the job offer. It is like all these people were forced to work there.

>agile is like the oposite of an actual engineering process
It's supposed to be based on the observation that customers tend to change what they want when they see your first prototype. When people try that with mechanical engineering, the costs go through the roof (see much stuff for NASA), whereas with software it's possibly more controllable. But to control the costs, you've got to go about things carefully so that you don't lock in decisions you are likely to need to change up.
A lot of "Agile" as seen in the wild is done by idiots who don't understand that and driven by management who think that having everyone in more meetings is the same as more productivity. That has strong vibes of "the beatings will continue until morale improves".

I'm not a retarded nigger like you. I know how to read commit graphs. Dark green (or bright green in dark theme) indicates a day with around 20-50 commits, and those lighter greens are around 5-15.
With only a handful of dark green squares and sparse amounts of light green square that takes up only half the year, I can guess your actual contribution count is around 500-1000, which is not bad but you are clearly trying to manipulate the value so that makes you a piece of shit.

>>103127268
The image reflects some common frustrations with Agile and Scrum practices, often stemming from how these methodologies are implemented rather than their inherent flaws. Here’s a breakdown of the main points raised and some context around them:

1. Constantly Changing Requirements: Agile encourages adapting to changes, but this doesn’t mean requirements should pivot dramatically every two weeks. When this happens, it may indicate unclear project goals or poor communication with stakeholders, rather than a failure of Agile itself.

2. Estimation Accuracy: Agile estimation methods like story points and T-shirt sizing are meant to improve predictability and set realistic expectations over time. However, they can be misused. If a team obsesses over precision or constantly questions the value of estimates, it’s often a sign that management is putting undue pressure on the process rather than trusting the team’s velocity.

3. Planning Poker and T-Shirt Sizing: These techniques are intended to encourage collaborative estimation and to communicate complexity rather than exact time commitments. If they’re treated as exact measures, it misses the point, which is more about shared understanding than precise forecasting.

4. “Points Represent Complexity, Not Time”: This is a valid critique. Many teams forget that story points aren’t meant to measure time but rather the relative effort of a task. However, pressures to deliver often lead managers to equate points with time, undermining the flexibility Agile is supposed to provide.

5. “Burn Down” and “Grooming”: Terms like “burn down” and “grooming” are indeed somewhat aggressive or strange in the context of work culture. Many Agile practitioners have shifted to more neutral terms like “backlog refinement” instead of “grooming.” Burn-down charts, while useful for tracking progress, can be misused to micromanage, creating anxiety rather than transparency.

Uncle Bob isn't a very good programmer, and pretty much all of his thoughts on testing is awful.

The one example in the book where he suggests that your test suite should have its own DSL (?????) is really embarrassing. I can't imagine trying to ship something only to have some brittle test break and I have to learn some encoded domain-specific testing methodology a developer came up with to write that test. His heart is in the right place but if he were a stronger programmer I think a lot of his suggestions would be different in implementation.

Red pill me on the standup. Is this something that happens at all tech jobs?
>>
>>103151478
it's a fancy word for a morning meeting, which is normal in most fields just to make sure everyone knows what they're to work on for the day, but in tech that meeting is usually completely useless because even individual tasks take longer than a day and there's 9001 different semi-automated systems for broadcasting or checking progress. also middle managers in tech are usually vastly more incompetent and out-of-touch than in other fields and the meetings end up being largely performative for those middle managers to justify their own existence rather than being a vessel for doling out specific tasks or asking about the status of things that may have been solved quietly later in the previous day
>>
>>103151478
it happens at all jobs everywhere. nurses and construction workers get told what floors they're working on, taxi drivers and cops get assigned their cars or sectors, etc. in fields that work around the clock usually it's where turnovers happen between individual workers (e.g. "machine #4 has been acting up today, glhf try not to die") even in min wage restaurants and retail it's where you'd be told of promotions or anything special that's come up (e.g. "x product was recalled so expect high volume at service desk")

tech people do a humiliation ritual where they interview for the job they already have in a giant panel with "project managers" who don't even understand the jobs being begged for
>>
>>103151478
>Red pill me on the standup
IT fag here instead of CS fag, but standups are usually the humiliation ritual of the day. What should happen is a quick 10 - 25 minute meeting with everyone in your department to understand what's going on, so if everyone is working on a project everyone who is assigned their little parts of the project will say out loud (usually to their managers request, no one else gives a shit) what they did and what they plan to do.

That's what SHOULD happen, but as >>103151525 puts it (in my experience too), it's just middle managers trying to justify their existence and it gets drawn out way too fucking long. Last time my boss wouldn't stop fucking talking and I had the standup last over an hour.
>>
Remote Tech support here, our standups used to be funny, we just wasted 30 minutes about t.v shows, games since everybody on the team was always meeting their metrics, than this faggot new manager from southamerica, came all squared
>no you can't talk about t.v shows
>no you can't talk about games
and our one on one were like "you could have done some other wording here"
So everybody just started to move to different departments or started to look for a new job as the dude didn't know anything about the product and was just asking for surreal metrics
>>
>>103151793
our boss is trying to do that but we're mixed zoomers boomers so it's insanely awkward

h-1b is only for slave labor jeets
there's no point in hiring an american with a funny accent when you can just hire an american
>>
>>103150360
One of the easiest things you can lie about.

Agile in a nutshell:
>daily meetings
>board where you have your work
>some sort of periodic meetings where you talk about things that happened or what to do

If you know these three things exist, you know agile and that's it. No company is going to ask detailed questions because agile is nonsense and all companies have their own versions of it.
>>
>>103152074
its not that simple kek, "go for H1-B" nowadays is almost impossible. if you happen to get lucky and an american company for some reason wants to hire you, there is still only about a 15% chance that you get the visa for that year.
the h1b path is too saturated now, most people try their luck with l1 nowadays.

... Why did you do it?
I did 70-483 (C# programming) back when Microsoft still offered it -- passed with 90+%,
and it was all just so the company could keep some "Silver Partner" certificate,
which should've meant, that we could use Visual Studio Professional Edition for free;
but as soon as it turned out, that Microsoft had removed that perk from the partnership programme,
I was laid off within the year.

Microsoft retired 70-483 and 70-480 (HTML5) in favour of an assload of Azure exams,
and I still don't understand why.
I don't understand, why Microsoft would go all-chips-in on cloud to the extent,
that they'll axe off everything else.

I NEED CAREER ADVICE.
I’ve been a WFH middle manager in my early 30s, working at the same IT company for about 5 years now. Normally, it’s a 40-hour-a-week gig, but I’ve gotten so good at navigating all the bullshit busywork processes that I get everything done in 4 hours. The other 36 “working” hours? I spend browsing 4chan, playing video games, and having a blast.
These 5 years have been the best of my life, but I feel like my salary is falling behind the market ($50k a year, with $10k total living costs). My situation’s pretty chill, but I also want a 6-figure salary job chill job.

>What skills do you have?
NO SKILLS.
-Before this busywork job, I was a busywork scrum master for 5 years.
- I have a Master's in Administrative Management, so my "skills" are basically all "interpersonal skills" (aka, no real skills).
- I don’t know how to code, and I have zero interest in learning. I’m just here for the process bureaucrat life.
So what the hell should my career path even be from here?
I know what I’m asking for sounds like a dream job, and honestly, I should probably just give up.
