Do you guys think actual dogfighting will ever come back? What technology/weapon developments would be necessary for this to happen?

The F-22 has worse kinematics than the F-15, that is why the F-15EX exists and why it won't leave service until there is something that can fly higher and faster while dropping JDAMs, JSOWs and SBDs.

I briefed the LTC to take his flight to the farthest most southern point of the airspace and be prepared to attack the coastline that we would defend. We would place ourselves on “Five” (five minute alert) and scramble when we saw him takeoff giving him the advantage of being ready when we arrived. I told him to be sure to look at the F-106 ramp on takeoff to verify that we there on “Five” and this would be important during the debrief. We briefed two engagements followed by join up for 1v1 basic fighter maneuvers (BFM), him versus me and the wingmen against each other.

The fun began as they lifted off and saw us on the edge of the ramp, “communicating”, with a raised finger over two rising moons! We had a hard time getting our crew chiefs to stop laughing so we could launch. A gate (full afterburner) climb to 41,000 feet put us in the airspace in 6 minutes when I called “fight’s on”! I felt sorry for my wingman because he would not get a shot on this first engagement. One minute later I called “Fox 3, KILL, two F-16s north bound at 18,000 feet. Nock- it off, nock-it off, fights over, return to your safe area,” was immediately passed to the Viper pilots. The LTC was so confused that the ground control intercept (GCI) controller had to tell him he had been shot by a “NUC” (Genie nuclear tipped rocket) and that him and his wingman were DEAD so return to your point! I told GCI to inform him that we had one more Genie but that we wouldn’t use it on the next engagement.

Score: Darts 2, Vipers 0
>>
>>64755900

I put my wingman in four mile trail as we began the next engagement from 41,000 feet at 1.2 MACH racing down to their altitude of 18,000 feet, dumb a - - he didn’t even change his altitude to make it harder on us. Since they had face heaters (firing heat seekers in our face), we cooled our jets by retarding the engines to idle power to cool them off and denying the face shot while maintaining supersonic on our downhill slide. They took the bait, the leader rolled out behind me, the wingman behind mine. We had them right where we wanted them! Not even an F-16 can sustain a climb followed by a 9 G turn and roll out 2 miles behind a supersonic target and chase them down so the missile will make the kill. The leader found himself in front of my wingman who easily “Doe popped” him with two missiles while outrunning the F-16 wingman.

Score: Darts 1, Vipers 0

After a fuel check we split for 1v1 BFM. Starting from line abreast each fighter turns 45 degrees away from the other to gain spacing. At the fight’s on call the fighters turn toward each other passing canopy to canopy with no advantage. The knife fight begins in earnest as they turn to gain six o’clock on the other for a guns kill. Hands are helpful in explaining what happens next. Obviously the Viper can out turn a Dart and the LTC was behind me closing for guns! My next maneuver required exact timing or it would turn out all bad. As he closed for the shot I presented him with the infamous “F-106 Barn Door”. This is a frightening experience for anyone who has never seen the Dart act in such an unbelievable aerodynamic manner. Never attempt this maneuver at home as it should only be done by a highly trained and experienced Dart driver!
>>
With him captured solidly at my six, in a hard four G turn, closing for the kill, fangs out and dripping, I held the G while applying full opposite rudder. The Dart responds beautifully with an opposite direction roll through the vertical to a full nose down dive where I apply full afterburner and dash for the deck. From the Viper’s cockpit it looked just like someone opened a barn door in his face, nowhere to go and no idea what to do. Suddenly the Dart disappears. His only option was to call nock-it off because he lost sight having never squeezed the trigger. Meanwhile our wingman had to nock-it off because the LT was low on fuel.

Score: Darts 0, Vipers 0

I sent the Vipers home and my wingman and I played for a while. My debriefing was short and sweet. The Fighter pilots had to fly again to get some real training. It went something like this: Know your enemy. Never underestimate your enemy. Never enter a gun fight with a knife. Never engage an enemy when you don’t have a clue. Lose sight lose the fight. Pecker checkers should be well endowed. When the Genie pops up, you’re goanna die! Nothing was ever said about the moons, I believe we “communicated” effectively!

Final Score: Darts 3, Vipers 0 America remained safe from attack!!

S. Michael Townsend, LTC, USAF Ret. “Viper 1, Pierre, Bucko, Genie, FMO, Rafsob”

Honestly? Getting owned by 2 falcons while carrying AIM-9L's in an F-16 is more humiliating than the genie kill.

>Do you guys think actual dogfighting will ever come back?
Yes, inevitably.
BVR combat is only possible in a world where at least one side doesn't employ stealth aircraft. In a conflict where stealth aircraft are the norm, detection ranges will shrink dramatically, bringing back chance WVR encounters.
This, in turn, will lead to a 1:1 exchange ratio regardless of pilot training and aircraft sophistication, simply as a result of IR missiles and the random chance of who spots who first.
This exchange ratio will then be deemed unacceptable, especially by Western nations with their high costs. The solution to this problem will be anti-rocket rockets, which leaves dogfights with guns as the only remaining means for an airplane to shoot down another airplane.
All these developments will already unfold in the coming generation of aircraft (F47, FAXX, GCAP, FCAS, the Chinese stuff, etc), which means it will be a mistake to not design them for high g and post stall maneuverability.

Porco Rosso might not be the objectively best Ghibli movie, but it sure is my fucking favorite, but then again I'm a sucker for that kind of romanticism.

Off the top of my head:

>John Wick and John Wick 2
The first movie was kino, then the gimmick got old, but as far as gunplay goes it's just fun.
>T-34
It's an atrocious propaganda movie that's so bad you can have so much fun if you watch it ironically. And there are War Thunder-tier tank battles.
>Equilibrium
Gun-fu: the movie, starring Christian Bale.
>Ghost in the Shell
Weapons, philosophy, boobs, and a mecha. It has everything.

Which is why it's the Navy and not the Army that should be getting the Air Force's excess funding. I don't see what that has to do with the Air Force splurging on the F-22 and F-47 when there was never a need for either.
>>
>>64754260
The F-22 and any air superiority fighter is a waste of money for the US because they are so far ahead of everyone else that their multi-roles are the worlds best air superiority fighters.
Making a fighter that can't drop bombs hasn't been a good idea for 60 years.

Yet another unoriginal firearm development from china with no follow up we need to know about.
>>
>>64754506
This is old. They were considering if the then new Type 95 was the right choice after all (not everyone was onboard the bullpup train), and that swanky hyperburst Abakan rifle looked interesting, so they copy it and try it.
Most likely they found the exact same things the Russians did, the hyperburst isn't actually that amazing, and it makes for an overcomplicated, and VERY expensive rifle, which is very maintenance heavy.

Bad service rifle, you don't want a gun which is both too difficult for a grunt to take care of, and which they then need to baby a lot. They made the right choice in sticking with the Type 95.

>>64755514
As I understand, the AN94 did see very small scale adoption. I remember hearing of Russian soldiers saying that they had on odd occasion seen their spec ops types show up with those on shooting ranges, and into the 2010s even, and if I'm not mistaken, at least one example turned up in Ukraine some time after the invasion started.

>>64755669
I think this kind of stuff is interesting. Not as interesting as the AN94 itself, as it's just a derivative of that, but that they decided to try it.
>>
>>64753156
how come it doesn't that the peanut muzzle device?
>>
>>64753156
I think the An-94 and hypershot guns are cool. And I'm tired of acting like they're not. Sure, it's filling a role that doesn't need filled and can be easily replaced by a select fire burst weapon, but I just think it's neat.

You can make your own port cleaner from a copper pipe brush and 12" PVC pipe, but it is necessary.
I haven't cleaned the suppressor itself yet at all. I'm using a BRT hub adapter and a CAT MOB for my suppressor stack.
I clean the barrel ports/threads every 300 or so rounds but you could go 600+ easy.
Other than that it's just like cleaning any other suppressed MP5. Being an SD adds maybe five minutes to cleaning the whole gun.

Purely on there for the super safety. It is a good lower, but fuck the price.

Why wouldn't something like pic related work fine as a "do everything" gun for a person living in the densely forested hills of Appalachia, where the power and ballistic advantage of a rifle simply isn't necessary?
>plinking will be good fun with the naturally subsonic .45
>definitely suitable for home defense
>easy enough to fit in a backpack, or take the can off and carry it on your person
>get some .45 Super for killing deer or hogs, or mess around with round ball loadings for taking small game or for pest control
Yes, it's true that rifles can be had for dirt cheap these days. And it's also true that there is no real reason to limit yourself to just one gun, especially a handgun. But in an autistic min-max fantasy where you literally can only own one gun and it has to be able to be carried 24/7/365, does a suppressed .45 automatic make sense? The only real downside I see here is that this is not the best option for summertime concealed carry in hot climates.

I exclusively use ball or hardcast lead in pistol calibers. Pistols do not create enough energy to cause catastrophic tissue damage from fragmentation or raw energy transfer like rifles. Pistols suck for killing, because they are only lethal by either hitting CNS or heart, or by causing bleedout. CNS and heart are both inside bone/muscle armor. Ball/hardcast lead maximizes penetration, meaning it is more likely to reach CNS or heart. Bleed rate is primarily determined by the number of holes blood can leak out from. Ball/hardcast lead is most likely to completely penetrate and create both entry and exit wounds. This means there are 2 holes for blood to leak out of instead of just 1. Hollow points are meme bullets designed to reduce liability for police who have to worry about their department getting sued if they shoot someone they shouldn't, so they have special bullets that don't penetrate properly to reduce the chances of shooting a bystander on the other side of their target. The best pistol bullet is hardcast lead with a broad, sharp-edged meplat that can shatter bone and shear through tissue. Ball is the second best, as the round nose is more susceptible to deflection off of bone. Hollow points are the worst as the have the least pentrative ability.
>>
>>64755543
I use hollow points in 357 mag. 357 is potent enough that you can expand a bullet and still get an exit wound if you use 158s. There is no downside to using hollow points in sufficiently powerful handguns.
>>
>>64755623
>there is no downside
except the inherent high cost of hollow points, or when the hollow point fails to expand, or breaks apart.
this is why the 45 wins.

What hollow point that isn't a frangible breaks apart in 357 mag? The only ones I have seen that do that are 110 grain bullets or all lead hollow points designed for 38 special. That's why I run 158s, or more specifically 154 grain HSTs. They pretty much always expand and even if they don't you are only a tenth of an inch smaller than a 45, but have significantly better barrier penetration. In the age of 3rd world's and leftists trying to run people over in their cars, that's pretty important.
