I recently saw a video which made me impressed by the advantages of a straight pull rifle. Who makes them besides blazer? Andy doesn’t everyone make them? In the past you could more reasonably argue that turn bolt are more precise but I’m not sure that holds anymore? Also manually operation rifle thread I guess

This is the rifle everyone uses for the biathlon, it's like a G3 or MP5. There's a wedge inside the back of the bolt, when the charging handle is forward the wedge is forward and it pushes the ball bearings out which lock into a groove in the receiver, when you pull the handle back it pulls the wedge back dropping the balls back into the bolt body.
There are a bunch of different straight pull bolts, not all of them work this way

not in target shooting, I took my sportsman 15 to the range to see where it was sighted and having to compress the striker spring calmly would get tiresome. Might see how fast it can run as then I wouldn't notice the striker spring ham fisting the bolt.

they have some fucking retarded numbering system like HK does for the roller guns which is made even more fucking annoying because only like half of HKs roller guns actually correctly follow their retarded fucking numbering convention
the first 2 digits denote the action the second 2 denote the type of gun outside the action
HK has a similar thing they only follow half the time where the first number is the gen the second is the gun type and the third is the caliber
an HK91 is a first gen US export semi auto rifle in 7.62 nato. an HK94 is a first gen US export semi auto in 9mm. An HK 43 is a semi auto only clone of an assault rifle in 5.56 designed to be sold to conscripts/national guardsmen in countries with conscription, like how the swiss take their sg90s home and can buy them but need the trigger pack changed to remove full auto

That's approximate number of nuclear warheads NATO, the Warsaw Pact, and their friends possessed at the peak of the Cold War in 1985.

Here's my question, if things had actually had actually come to a head, how many of these could actually have been fired off in an exchange. Say, it's all-out mutually assured destruction where the goal is the total extermination of the opposing side, could you have actually seen 60,000+ warheads being fired off or would both sides have had command and control collapse after the first few hundred and the rest being left unable to be used?

Will a carbon steel firing pin break or should it be ok? We had one break and are getting it recreated using a CNC milling machine, they are going to scan the dimensions of the pin perfectly and cut a new one out a block of metal. Just don’t want it to happen again

$130 per pin he’s quoted me, and $80 for the scanning job. So $210 all up for one - or he said he will make x10 for $530 and waive the scan fee.
Im thinking just get one to try it first and if it’s good I’ll get a few spares made up

>O1 is basically what Win and others have used for the past 150 years
I find that hard to believe, for one because O1 hasn't even really been around for 150 years, and also because it's just better suited for things like drill bits, not impact parts.
And you can get 6" long, 3/8" diameter hardened 4140 rod from McMaster for ~$3 and not even have to worry about heat treating or deformation.
>>
>>64640556
You tried machining a pre-hard rod? Uniform hardness is also not a good thing for a firing pin.
>>
>>64640573
>Uniform hardness is also not a good thing for a firing pin.
It doesn't really matter if its toughness is high enough.
>>
>>64639701
You'd need an optical comparator to get the scallop right, but it probably doesn't matter much

>>64637617
>>64637620
A non heat treated firing pin will not last long at all. Mil spec calls out for 8640 with a salt bath heat, salt bath quench, and air cooling.
You should look at a 17-4PH pin heat treated up to H900 (hold at 900°F for an hour, air cool), and that's going to get you RC ~45. You'll find rod stock on Mcmaster for cheap.

You could go up in case hardness (HRC 55+) with nitriding, but it depends on your needs.
>>
Holy fuck you are getting hosed. I've whipped out similar firing pins on the lathe in less than half an hour. Just use fucking tool steel like O1 and draw it back to blue (roughly 550 degrees F) after the oil quench.

Is it that hard to find a competent gunsmith in your area? Their is absolutely no need for CNC on that firing pin, it's a stupidly basic thing to do on the lathe. And the scalloped section I would just take care of using hand files, the mill is too much work to set up for something that isn't that critical.

That's less than a $100 job in my shop.

I have this gun unlike the others; it emulates an original SAA quite nicely save for the firing pin retraction safety they put on it (I had it replaced with a regular hammer and trigger later on due to personal taste). Shoots well, looks good, takes about 50 (44/40) blackpowder cartridges before I need to cleanse it from the fouling. Be sure to keep an eye on the screws or apply some blue Loctite, because just like the originals, they'll back out in due time.
>ruger vaquero
A beefed-up SAA which allows you to shoot hotter loads out of it, though instead of putting the hammer at half-cocked to free the cylinder, you instead open up the loading gate to free it (the cylinder makes no clicks and can be a little weird to reload due to it being more "slick"), and then there's the transfer bar. They have a great reputation and since you do not care for authenticity would make for a great choice.
>taurus deputy
Don't know much about it other than that it has a transfer bar like the Vaquero and Taurus has been doing better in recent years so perhaps give it a proper look later.
>uberti 1875
A similar story to the 1873, but with a different body I take it; it's a beauty.
I would also recommend looking into Pietta's line since from what I've heard, they have better internals than a Uberti at the cost of not looking as good.
>>
>>64637416

not exactly import laws, but liability. I think some dude shot himself through a holster by loading on a worn out gun, so the safety notch on the hammer was more of a suggestion, they got sued, so now Uberti only makes one 1873 with a proper 4 click action and a "non-safety" hammer, and that's the Cimarron Old Model line of guns, with the pre-1896 style bullseye ejector rod and front base pin screw. All Pietta guns are 4 click actions and lack any type of firing pin safety. I have one myself, and it's a nice gun to shoot, though I haven't had a chance to load BP .45 through it as nobody near me even sells substitute, let alone true BP.

If those are your options, id recommend the vaquero. I have a lot of different single actions but I always pick the rugers to actually shoot. The old model vaquero is larger whereas the new model is a medium frame much closer to colts and italian repros. I have both but prefer the old model. The reason i suggest the vaquero is that it is simply tougher. You can shoot +p pissin hot loads out of the old model. The coil springs will last indefinately compared to leaf springs in the most other saa clones. I have broken two mainsprings in an uberti and a dakota but I havent broken a part on the ruger yet, fingers crossed. You can do what I did and get one with a 45 auto cylinder for cheap plinking too. Its cool to carry a 1911 magazine as a speed loader too.

Unpopular opinion on this board:

(From a relative close distance)

Ive tried one of those arrows here and it cutted straight through an European wooden door (meaning, heavier, massive, not made of cardboard). It got stuck because of the back part of the arrow

Lets say from close distance:
A single arrow of this kind is deathlier than a single bullet from the same distance honnestly. This blade cutts enough veins and its impact is horrific. If it hits an artery its done soon but even the veins, tissue, other shit it damages is quite sick if you ask me. It's dark here now otherwise I could show you the door with literally a vertical hole of that arrow through it.

I think a bullet will be my choice if I have to choose between being hit by a single bullet or a single arrow of this kind

It's been the subject of wuite a few studies on terminal performance and is the reason 5.56 was chosen. Also the cross section of a HPBT projectile like smk's don't lend themselves to expansion, it's a ballistic efficiency and weight distribution thing

The Kraken unit loves using them suppressed. They were established in 2022 to do "direct action missions" behind enemy lines; stuff like recon and sabotage.

The funny thing about SF units still using any SMGs (regardless of caliber) after 2009 is that it sort of proves that .300 BLK is sort of a meme. I shouldn't get into that discussion because it's worthy of it's own thread but .300 BLK has really not lived up to its niche.

>>64641014
>MP5
It's a superior design in every way, but it's only made in 9mm nowadays (with a few 10mm ones in the used market after the FBI got rid of them). That's why guns like the Stribog are coming out.

I've got a serious strategy to beat China in WW3. Let's say we're trying to invade Shanghai: we'll humidify the fuck out of Shanghai's atmosphere with milk particles. Chinese people by-and-large are lactose intolerant, so all the Chinese soldiers will be forced to surrender due to shitting their pants or experiencing a tummy ache; meanwhile, the milk in the atmosphere will enhance the combat capabilities of western soldiers. It doesn't violate the Geneva Conventions because milk is technically not a chemical weapon, and it'd be humane too since it doesn't even cause any permanent injuries. We'll haul over all kinds of equipment and boatloads of milk to achieve it, and we could even "poison" Shanghai's water supply with milk, leaving the Chinese with zero ability to fight. There'd probably be mass desertions too since PLA soldiers would just ditch the trenches to get away from the smell of shit.

I don't know if chemical weapons are within the scope of /k/, but what do you guys think? Should I try and lobby this idea to a think tank?

It's time to buy a gun in a big boy caliber. I plan on hunting with it, so weight and length is a concern. 500 yards and in, deer sized game. Thinking 6.5 creedmoor or .308, maybe in a 16" or 18" barrel since I like using a can. Thoughts? I like the springfield waypoint, but the barrel seems a bit long. Sig cross is tempting as well, even though I hate Sig with a passion. It has to shoot very tiny groups (sub .75 moa preferred) because im an accuracy douche, weigh less than 9 lbs, and preferably cost under 2500. Willing to go higher if its not super diminishing returns. Buy a factory gun or build one?

yeah but you aren't gonna go hunting because you're too shy to go to classes, have no idea where to even go to hunt and have no idea what to do with a deer once you shoot it.

so how about you just buy a steyr scout in 308 and have fun at the range instead.
