The only real problem with the BMP-1 is that the soviets struck gold once and refused to change their way of thinking around IFVs ever since even though the BMP including all its derivatives were obsolete in the 80s. The BMP-2 was a good improvement, but it was still hampered by that god awful chassi.

Do you need special munitions to take out power plants in a similar way to runway cratering and taking out hardened bridges?

It seems like Russia and Ukraine just take the route of trying to hit critical components and grid connectors but we've seen that so long as you have access to components then you can quickly return to business after a strike.

Opinion discarded

Since the Iran war is so controversial, let's think about a war absolutely nobody would have a problem with.

This morning, the President of the United States has tasked you with preforming a great service to humanity: The invasion of India. What happens to them after the war is up to you, if you'd like to genocide them, balkanize them or maybe try to make them into a functioning country or whatever. The objectives from the POTUS are fairly straight forward.

>The destruction of the Indian military
>The destruction or control of their nuclear weapons (They do have a nuclear triad so, it's important that's nipped in the bud before any issues arise)
>The Pacification of the Indian civilian population. Through any means necessary.

ITT we talk about how we would go about destroying India and what we'd do after they've been defeated. You can go about it anyway you want, not just a military campaign - be it a direct intervention; inciting a civil war through espionage or economically. Extra points for describing the methods of depopulation.

Picrel is a map of all the major sites and military installations

A handful of anglos with muskets and a few cannon took all of this single-handed. I'd just go to the local bar and ask anyone with a gun and some free time if they want to have fun and fuck brown girls while blasting dot heads. Three or four bars and I'd have enough to occupy the sub continent for a generation.

>Step 1: Naval blockade
As the economic effects of that play out things will get much easier for step 2
>Step 2: incite internal tension
Pull on the ethnic, religious, and caste divisions within Indian society, push as many of them to turn violent as possible, laying the groundwork for your eventual occupation
>Step 3: If step 2 doesn't work let Pakistan believe that you'll let them keep all the land they can take from India
You won't, of course, but there's a decent chance that this leads to at least a limited nuclear exchange, which should cause enough damage to make the eventual occupation a lot easier
>Step 4: After occupation encourage as many Indians as you can to relocate to China
Just for the giggles

If mid-Cold War had sea skimming missiles but no reliable CIWS / SHORAD, how were ships expected to not die?
51 replies and 4 images omitted. Click here to view.
>>
>>65046221
For the NATO? ECM, which those early active radar missiles were susceptible to, and combat air patrols. For Soviets? Die.
>>
>>65049396
In that case my knowledge has been expanded.
>>
>>65049156
>When cold war-era missile seekers go active they don't know which target to prioritize, they simply lock onto the strongest return
Not all of them. Some had a tiny bit of logic built in that was able to randomly select one of the strong returns.

The idea was that this would cause a missile salvo to naturally spread out instead of overkillling the first or largest return, and it might help against chaff clouds.
Soome missiles also had IR seekers, and some could be set to home-on-jam.

It mamy loook primitive from today's perspective, but they were really pushing whaht their electronics could do.
>>
>>65049705
Yeah but that's implying the formation is very close together. And while Cold War era formations were tighter than today, it was still feasible to station a ship far enough forward on the threat vector to eat the salvo.
>>
>>65046317
Falklands was the war where every nation realised how vulnerable their ships were to ASMs and adapted.
The UK didn't have adequate defences during that war, but you are correct in that they did have some attempt at a defemsive system.

Modern warfare is just the next generation of adaption that's been happening over 20 years at this point.

It's just unobtanium. They were fairly competent as far as 1970s bullpups go, and the lever delayed blowback system is novel but it isn't any better than a basic AR-15 or AUG.

Still, it would have been nice to get them as parts kits. A tiny number of semi auto versions were imported in the 1980s which is basically the only way for an American to ever hold or shoot one. God help you if you lose or break the magazine as well, which was intended to be disposable and is virtually impossible to replace now. They did make an AR pattern compatible G2 but that never made it to market here.
>>65049022
Politics. The military usually has their hands tied and is required to destroy surplus inventory because politicians don't want egg on their faces when some idiot makes the news shooting up a school with a gun or piece of surplus gear they sold. Germany had a huge "oh shit" moment when all the cheap flecktarn kevlar vests they dumped ended up being used by Azov in Ukraine. That's why those vests went from being $34 a pop to unobtanium overnight. They destroyed their remaining inventory in 2015/16ish.

Now it's a nightmare for any military in Europe to sign off surplusing anything. It happens, but usually by a 3rd party country. For instance they send old helmets/uniforms/rifles to a small backwater in their sphere of influence and those guys sell it commercially once they have finished thrashing it. It's not impossible to get some FAMAS kits that way from some smaller French speaking country many years from now. I suspect that's where we recently got some French marked Sig 540 kits from.

I haven't seen one in a good while. I'm seriously thinking about buying an AUG soon so I'd like some advice.

I know there's both 5.56 and .300 blackout variants to choose from and I'm leaning towards the .300 and just using supersonic ammunition. AUGs are notable for being poor suppressor hosts anyways, right? Plus, prices for supersonic .300 aren't that bad according to AmmoSeek when compared to 75/77gr 5.56 which I already buy. Plus if I ever change my mind about .300 I could just buy a 5.56 barrel.

>(or I guess any other really long barrel gun)
Yeah, bullpup is completely irrelevant here, as is:
>like 20" or 24", is there risk of baffel strikes?
Wat? If anything longer barrel length (within v gain) would (utterly negligibly) reduce the risk of baffle strikes since the bullet is moving faster when it exits the barrel. But it's effectively irrelevant no matter what. Baffle strikes (or rather can core strikes in general, since 3D printed cans don't have baffles) happen from manufacturing/assembly errors or improper seating. Like if you direct thread with no locker and forget to check tightness from time to time and let the can wander off the end. Doesn't matter if the barrel is 8" or 36" for either of those.

This.
It wouldn't have met parity, but given everything they (didn't) have to work with, it's an impressive achievement.

>Country can't manufacture a metal wheel.
>Tank, sans guns, can be built in backyard of average farmer with local materials and local skill level.
>Impregnable to small arms fire. Requires AT to take it out.

Don't get me wrong, there's a lot wrong with it. It's taller than a Maus, slower than one too. It can't turn while moving. It gets penetrated by any AT grade munitions. It never got a proper cannon.
But it's a genuinely cool bit of history, and for what Semple himself was working with, it's a damn impressive achievement.

basically instead of having an action that's bolted to the stock both the barrel and the action are just hanging in space and the only part where it touches the stock is the clamp at the base of the barrel, which also acts like a heat sink which uses the entire chassis into a radiator.
>>
>>65046613
Pretty neat, and surprisingly pretty darn reasonably priced too given the market. I mean, obviously ~$4500 isn't cheap per se, but comparing to ultra high end Ko2M sorts of guns like what you might get from AI or the like, that's actually lower then a lot of them despite being a brand new thing doing some neat stuff and not mass manufactured at all.

>but are bolters realistic?
All of the principles behind them are sound but the design of a Godwyn pattern is pretty silly.
The tabletop suggests they're good at piercing man portable protection up to light carapace, which is a ceramite/armorplas combination, the space magic version of ceramic/uhmwpe. They're diamantine tipped which again is space magic, but probably means they're a barrier blind round similar to M855A1. But remember these are anywhere from .6 to .75 cal rockets.
