Stephen responded with...

"I wasn’t really thinking of the sexual aspect of it. The book dealt with childhood and adulthood –1958 and Grown Ups. The grown ups don’t remember their childhood. None of us remember what we did as children–we think we do, but we don’t remember it as it really happened. Intuitively, the Losers knew they had to be together again. The sexual act connected childhood and adulthood. It’s another version of the glass tunnel that connects the children’s library and the adult library. Times have changed since I wrote that scene, and there is now more sensitivity to those issues."

Later, he said...

“That sounds like my statement.” He added: “To it I’d just add that it’s fascinating to me that there has been so much comment about that single sex scene and so little about the multiple child murders. That must mean something, but I’m not sure what.”
>>

>That doesn‘t make it right.
Even if that's the case, it does make it incomparable to public masturbation.
>>

>That must mean something, but I’m not sure what.
There are people who genuinely believe having sex with children is worse than murdering them and I know exactly what that means

if you have free will, you can choose a different path, maybe deciding to become a dentist instead, because that’s what feels right to you. Free will is about making choices that reflect your desires, values, and goals, rather than being pushed along by someone else’s expectations or by forces outside of your control.

Illness, accidents, or where you were born (country, time period) can completely change your life path without your choice.

Your parents’ values, religion, and culture strongly shape how you see the world, often before you’re even aware of it.

Childern doesn't have free choiceو a child might want to stay up late playing video games, but their parents send them to bed at 9 PM.

Parents often pick what their young children wear, especially for school or special events.

You don’t get to choose your natural talents, intelligence level, height, or many aspects of your personality they’re shaped by biology.

Someone might dream of traveling the world, but if they don’t have money, their “choice” is limited.

Time is an illusion
But seriously, it is a pointless question
You cannot know the system from within it if the system decides you are not to know
>>
>>24700280
no because free will was also planned in, so it's + -=0
>>
>>24700280
Nah dawg the sufficient reason for free will is free will itself

I'm from the region and I hate how the last thirty-five years around here were spent aping the absolute worst trends in the absolute worst ways.

Your three choices are
>magical realism decades after it stopped being cool

Reading Hegel is like learning philosophy all over again. Roughly speaking I might say he synthesizes Aristotle with Fichte/Schelling - an incredibly based move. I got into the idealists because of this latent Aristotelianism even in Kant but especially in Fichte. It was like they were taking the back door into a philosophy I already respected. Hegel is, speaking positively, like a purifying of Fichte. Fichte is weird because his philosophy, as speculative as it is,
actually devalues thought as such, Hegel is putting thought at the front.

Gene wolfe thread for the discussion of BoTNS, BoTLS, BoTSS, and the solar cycle in general.

Mainly because I need to know if I’m fucking crazy or not, but the Hierogrammates/Heirodules are absolutely fucking lutely just the inhummi, mentioned in Urth of The New Sun as the race that mankind found that was not like us but similar to us, that we slowly moulded to be better so that they would mould us, with whom we would trade off in time back and forth each divine year right?
It makes too much sense with the Whorl being launched thousands of years, if not millions of years before Severian’s birth - the inhummi evolve over this time thanks to Silk’s influence and turn into the Heiros of Severian’s time.
Fucking Gene Wolfe, man.

>It can be the case that one is unconscious of his Universal Will. He may believe, indeed, that it is directly opposed to his Will, even though it is his [true] Will. The criminal who is punished may wish, of course, that the punishment be warded off but the Universal Will brings with it the decree that the criminal shall be punished. It must be assumed that the Absolute Will of the criminal demands that he shall be punished. In so far as he is punished the demand is made that he shall see that he is punished justly and, if he sees this, although he may wish to be freed from the punishment as an external suffering yet, in so far as he concedes that he is justly punished, his Universal Will approves of the punishment.

I wasn't expecting this book to be so fucking funny. The first half wasn't anything out of the ordinary for a realist novel, but the second half, once Emma starts her affairs, is non stop genius comedic situations after another.

The clubfoot guy. Rodolphe writing the letter. The theater. The punchline at the climax with Emma hearing the blind guy. Good lord. So good.

Probably the funniest book I've ever read.

Discuss.

Faulkner's adjective-laden and overly descriptive scene-setting is rather Conrad-esque imo. It's just cloaked in southern colloquialisms, an unending stream of consciousness, and a complete disregard for punctuation. Hemingway is less guilty of it, but he still did it from time to time, and usually to make a thematic or narrative point.

Beauty is subjective

The guys who wanted to make the Houellebecq porn just dropped one of the most interesting discussions on art that I've listened to in the last years.
Part of the video goes on to talk about their manifesto, which you can find here:
Overall, many debatable ideas, but many things relevant also for this board insofar as we talk about literature as art. These seem to me to be more or less like the only people trying to go beyond the woke/nazi duality of 2016, which, as you may have noticed, has grown very stale in the last years.
What lies beyond empty culture wars? What form does power have today and how does it interact with art? And what purpuse does art serve in a world where institutions are crumbling and people with means are not interested in it?

>Keeping It Real Art Critics (KIRAC) try to overcome polarization in the Netherlands. They do so by having a complete slut called Jini, who is a leftist, put up an ad in right-wing forums that she wants to fuck rightoids. It is to be filmed for an art project on bridging the divides in the Netherlands. The first guy that answers the ad is a road worker and complete retard. He fucks her for an entire weekend and they have a lot of fun. He is so playful and animalistic about it that he seduces the female camerawoman into a threesome as well. Pure retard-Chad energy.
>The next guy that answers the ad is Sid Lukkassen, a fairly well-known wannabe major public """intellectual""" basically just a Jubilee kid, the worst of /pol/ in terms of flat arguments that appeal to his seals, who believes all the fringe MRA shit about how males should have all the agency, women should be passive and deferential to men, bla bla bla. In the days leading up to the filming, Dutch right-wing forums are completely electric at the prospect that one of their guys gets to fuck a leftie girl and put her in her place as a deferential woman. Sid's application to fuck Jini is a video of him talking about how he used to fuck a leftist woman, and the inspiration it gave him made him believe he could create entirely new artforms - it is very, very cringe.
>The day arrives, Sid shows up to fuck Jini, and what ensues can most adequately be described as the most thorough character assassination and sexual humiliation of a public figure I have ever seen. It is profoundly enjoyable to see a retarded trad-LARPer like Sid be so utterly fucking destroyed by his own autism once he has to live up to his delusional self-image. It is an absolutely masterful deconstruction of his entire being, and incel faggots in the Netherlands petitioned to have the film banned because they feared for Sid's mental health, should it be released. Several other rightoid outlets considered it exploitation of autism, these well-meaning attempts to defend Sid the trad-LARPer just adding insult to his already mortal injuries.
>Sid is like the archetype of a /pol/posting know it all pseud who thinks Evola is profound
>Oh, he also looks a lot like Martin Luther, lol

>As to the rest of her, I’ve nothing to say: it’s only a woman’s head and her hair that I’m really interested in. It’s what I like to feast my eyes on first in the street, and then enjoy in private indoors. There are good and positive reasons for this preference. The hair is the dominant part of the body: it’s placed in the most obvious and conspicuous position and is the first thing we notice. The rest of the body achieves its effect through brightly coloured clothes, the hair through its natural sheen... In a nutshell, hair is so important that whatever adornments a woman may appear in – gold, jewels, fine clothes – unless she’s made the most of her hair, you can’t call her properly dressed.

I have read or listened to most of King's books.I don't think he is a Hemingway or a Steinbeck. The writing is simple.

There may be a few novels or stories that disappoint. Reading his whole library boils down to a year of my existence. I would not trade that year for anything. I am the "dear constant reader." His auto biography "On Writing" is his best work. His politics are wrong.

He will be known as the GOAT in 50 years.
