I am autistic (diagnosed) and I get literally nothing from 'good prose'. It doesn't make me feel anything. This makes it really hard for me to read anything where the appeal is the beauty of language, because I can't see any of it. It becomes a chore and boring. Poetry is even more inscrutable to me. Should I just give up trying to read and focus on my autistic special interests? Or is there a way I can make myself learn to enjoy good writing?

If reading isn't already one of your autistic special interests, go with the interests and drop the reading.
If you're interested in reading, I'd suggest going with philosophy. If you're strongly autistic and aren't looking for beauty of language, Aristotle could be a good start - try the Nichomachean Ethics, it's a really good text.
I was like you btw. After I read a lot of philosophy something switched: you consider a lot of different arguments from different positions, learn a lot of technical vocabulary, and things begin to feel weird... You can predict where authors want to go, and poetic language starts sounding cooler, because at least it does something weird/unexpected. Stuff like Deleuze begins having sense not as a "literal" philosophical text but as a text that's doing something special with language. After that, you get to novels and poetry. You begin liking them because they seem like upgrade to language practices you got accustomed to, it's like watching weird porn after getting addicted to vanilla stuff.
>>
Read national romantic literature. It's stuffed full of flowery pretty language. What cunt do you come from?
>>
>>25183289
Moslly genre fiction. But I tried a few recommendations here from /lit/ to try to get into "real literature" a few times at different periods but none of those ever clicked with me. Closest it ever got was reading Kafka, I thought Castle + Trial + Metamorphosis were good read, although I'm sure a lot of the intended meaning and subtext flew over my head.

I do like more visual ones, yeah. Music is similar though, it doesn't do much for me.

Reading is an interest but I mostly read genre fiction. I will try what you and the other anon here suggested. Maybe reading philosophy will unlock that within me too.

I am from Poland. But it applies to both English and my native language, I don't think reading Polish stuff in Polish helps with this.

we have had the philosophical debate around intoxicating consumables like alcohol, drugs and such since the ancient greeks. but what do we make of things like coffee and black/green tea? what did the old philosophers think of these? intoxicating? a useful tool? a crutch?

Just like with everything else, as Solon said, "Too much of anything hurts" and everything should be done in moderation.

I don't remember where I read it, but there was this guy who wrote about how without coffee we never have had the enlightenment and the french revolution because a lot of the writers of the era loved to pull all-nighters where they used coffee as fuel for their intellectual projects.

Except that is false and protestant. You can escape hell if you repent and "serve" your time. Purgatory is the true place where you are severed from God, because you were not baptized/rejected God.

He’s right though, you kept changing your position every time it was attacked. The majority of the people here on /lit/ are male. Now you might think that’s worth zilch, but think of it like a microcosm for people who (for the most part) like to discuss literature that isn’t genre fiction unless it’s in derision. If men aren’t reading litfic, then neither are women. Stop trying to pretend that slop literary fiction written by women ISN’T in large part to DEI bullshit. God, you’re annoying.

Pretty close to the definition of a talentless hack. Pure juvenilia read almost exclusively by people inexperienced enough to be tricked by his smelly 'bohemian' facade, anyone beyond their freshman year is definitely too mature to stomach garbage like Bukowski for more than a couple pages (and if you're unfortunate enough to find his poetry first, I'm sorry you had to experience that)

So ice cream is the same as heroin. Damn you're so smart! Really helpful to blur everything so now we consider ice cream and heroin as being in the same categorie. Thanks for muddying the waters.
>libertarian theory
I wipe my ass with your theory, so does the rest of the world.
>gambling just didn't exist before the state legalized it
It's about volume, dumb gorilla nigger. Is that the next thing you're going to blur? Some people gambled in Las Vegas so nothing changed when every human could gamble on the go from their phone 24/7 on literally everything.
>Just don't use them
How about we ban them? Works better.
>when are you going to stop using 4chan?
Never. Do I need to point out the difference between a 4chan and an Instagram? I guess Meta just pumps money into research to keep you hooked for nothing since it´s just the same as an imageboard. Hey you should contact Mark Zuckerberg! You're a very clever guy and you should tell him he's wasting his money!

>It's not hyperbole, you get mad and wanted a strawman to take down.
Says the fag that cries and throws around threats of violence on the Internet lmfao.
>So ice cream is the same as heroin. Damn you're so smart!
A difference in degree is not a difference in kind. In principle both would be addictions (provided you buy into the dopamine argument used against social media) even if they vary in their "seriousness." And since when were we comparing ice cream to heroin? I was comparing ice cream to social media, which is the actual subject at hand.
>I wipe my ass with your theory, so does the rest of the world.
You and the rest of the world are total clowns. Which is why the world is shit.
>Some people gambled in Las Vegas so nothing changed when every human could gamble on the go from their phone 24/7 on literally everything.
That has more to do with the availability of the services provided by the Internet. Which doesn't have much to do with legalization. Piracy is illegal, yet tons of people do it because the Internet makes it easy to do.
>How about we ban them? Works better.
Again, privacy is illegal, how's that working out? And the erring reason binds, if someone comes to particular conclusion, like say placing bets on an app, it's immoral to use force to negate that person's judgement. If someone makes a bad decision as a result of their own poor judgement, it's up to them, no one else, to deal with the consequences. In fact by resorting to force, you're implicitly saying that you have no argument against it, and thus have no valid grounds to claim that you know better.
>Never. Do I need to point out the difference between a 4chan and an Instagram?
Let's look at the definitions of social media provided by the Cambridge English dictionary, shall we...
>websites and computer programs that allow people to communicate and share information, opinions, pictures, videos, etc. on the internet, especially social networking websites:
>forms of media that allow people to communicate and share information using the internet or mobile phones:

bullshit, Japan has always had a culture of prostration. commoners on that island have always been forced to worship their overlord class, the social framework has simply modernized since WW2. contemporary Japanese consumerism is the result of hundreds of years of ruling classes conditioning regular Japanese people to treat their "superiors" as infallible and it shows in their complete submission to corporate flagellation

I remember school and university, where trying to get good grades and paying attention in class made teachers and other students think I'm a nerd, when I would actually just study, say, math on my own, with a tutor, in class, read about it online and still barely pass exams and tests
I easily learned english as a child, but when it came to learning a third foreign language in school I was very below average, one of the worst students in my group, it was humiliating
I've now tried to learn a few languages (French, German, Latin, Spanish, Russian, probably a few others I've forgotten too) and I've struggled with them a lot, even studying every day for 3 hours (I did manage to keep up that pace) would generally not net me anything. it doesn't help that there are so many charlatans in the language learning "hobby space" that you don't even know what "method" to use while learning a language. probably the worst thing is that language learning communities are full of intelligent people who have many languages under their belts and this is their special interest and you can't compare yourself to them
I like reading books and don't really like video games or TV, so I spend a large chunk of my free time reading. I know a bit about history, philosophy, things like this which automatically make other people think you're intelligent, but it's a bit of an illusion and I've disappointed pretty much every teacher I've had in my life. in general I am a pretentious failure who is well read enough, knows about history, philosophy and thinks he's intelligent, so I can discuss things with other people, but honestly, with the philosophy that I've read it's more that I memorized the logic but don't actually understand anything at all. it would take one actually intelligent person who's read enough as me to show that I'm just a complete fraud and retard
I'm too stupid and lazy to ever learn another language

also OP you seem to be confusing being well-read with being skillful. you are probably decently well-read but not skillful. skill is about getting certain things like writing/woodworking/singing/programming/etc. down to muscle memory through years of practice. being well-read is about having a bunch of facts/dates/names in your head on demand. in my opinion and in the opinion of most of the people i talk to, we would prefer to know people who are skilled rather than well-read. however, if this makes any sense, you seem skilled at introspection and being humble, and i find that admirable myself

my advice, if you want it, is that once you see yourself actually get better at a skill it becomes a bit of an addiction to get better at from that point on. i recommend trying to learn specifically Italian to a basic speaking proficiency, having a bit of a celebration for yourself, then pushing yourself even higher. writing down observations you see from native speakers on youtube or twitch will immerse you way better than just reading books or rote memorization of grammar. no specific method beats raw practice. in bocca al lupo
>>
>>25180947
>probably the worst thing is that language learning communities are full of intelligent people who
I'll stop you right there bucko
an intelligent person does not learn a language unless he needs it for something (sex, money, or other freudian stuff)... and if he actually needs it, there is zero change it will waste any time on some "hobby space"

Glad to see others have already recommended later not quite so well-known novels, Kangaroo and The Plumed Serpent. Regarding his poetry: he was a very talented user of strict forms who wrote some really nice lyrics earlier on; later volumes, like Pansies, develop a loose free verse that it like transcribed talk, fortunately very interesting talk. There is a great volume of Complete Poems published by Penguin, I recommend.

Lawrence was amazingly productive; he was capable of exceptionally good writing in both prose and verse; naturally enough, not everything he wrote is up to his own best standard.
