Reminder:>"But, as I said before, your young men do well to come to us and learn our language; for, not only does our literature merit attention on its own account, but no one can deny that he who now knows German well, can dispense with many other languages. Of the French, I do not speak; it is the language of conversation, and is indispensable in travelling, because everybody understands it, and in all countries we can get on with it instead of a good interpreter. But as for Greek, Latin, Italian, and Spanish, we can read the best works of those nations in such excellent German translations, that, unless we have some particular object in view, we need not spend much time upon the toilsome study of those languages. It is in the German nature duly to honour after its kind, everything produced by other nations, and to accommodate itself to foreign peculiarities. This, with the great flexibility of our language, makes German translations thoroughly faithful and complete. And it is not to be denied that, in general, you get on very far with a good translation. Frederick the Great did not know Latin, but he read Cicero in the French translation with as much profit as we who read him in the original."

How many books did you read this year?
I read like 4 short story collections this year. Can I only count that as 4 books?
I read two or three books this year. And I'm still smarter than all you dumbfucks who think reading 100+ books is an achievement.

this yuear was bad, it hink i only read 3 full books, then a few partial reads I got a new videogame console this year so its been bad

Is there a book you'd recommend if I wanted a comprehensive history of literature and literary movements?

I recently re-read this book from my childhood and now want to read Prose Edda and Poetic Edda. What are the best re-written versions of these books into modern English that respect the intent of the source material?
get the hollander translation of the poetic edda. the source material in the poetic edda is a mix of didactic poems (mainly for remembering facts or established myths) and poems that would have been read aloud to non-poets. both types of poems expect you to know the source material and enjoy the poets skill and the sounds he creates (while caring less about intelligibility since you have the basic gist already), and the non-didactic poems try to capture the emotion in a single scene or episode of a story. hollander does a good job as far as emotion goes but he really shines in his verse and use of almost all Germanic words that create a sound you dont often hear in english.
>Favorite Norse Myths by Mary Pope Osborne features popular tales like Odin losing his eye, Thor getting his hammer, Loki's tricks (like his children), the Golden Apples of Idun, and the lead-up to Ragnarok, all retold accessibly for younger readers>Osborne makes complex myths understandable and engaging for kids (ages 8-12) and adults alike.
English is such a shit language. For me the nail in the coffin for English was when I learned that the problem of ambiguity between argument and explanation, where all you have to disambiguate is context, which they talk about in logic books, is not something which is universal in logic, but rather is a problem of English. Other languages don't have this problem. English is a low IQ language. All it's good for is dumbing down the masses.
I bet OP is native in German or some equally shit nigger language t. Finnish master race
>>24973489>Study a dead languageNo thanks
>>24965277English is a language of degrees, which its Europoor neighbours lack. And through these degrees we can be as precise or ambiguous as we want to be, while Germanoids or Mediterranoids are caught in their preset phrasing. An excellent example is modal verbs, where an English speaker has an arsenal of choices for the precise meaning he choses to impart like "should", "must", "ought to", "have to", "might", "could", "have to", while most other languages only have the equivalent of "must" or sometimes "have to". ESLs frequently embarrass themselves by telling colleagues they "MUST" do something when that register is not appropriate. English is an exceedingly diplomatic language that requires thinking before you speak which is alien to most other cultures. You'll quickly understand why Britain ruled half the world as colonial viceroys for like 300 years the moment you speak to a German, Spaniard or Dutchman IRL and see how crude their ability to express demands or desires is.
>>24965277ESL skill issue
>>24982744Any supporting anecdotes?
"The limits of my language mean the limits of my world"The normie scholar reads this as "limits of thought limit one's interpretations" and "my world is limited by a personalised language of interpretation". Wittgenstein makes a much deeper claim: "The world is a posteriori to a metaphysic more fundamental than the self". The world is but the current material configuration of facts. Whence come facts? The same place where the meaning of language comes from. Now this deeper fundament of the Self and every fact is utterly unknowable to us. Beyond reason, beyond logic, we can not philosophise our way to this place. The apparent arbitrariness of the meaning of words, of the origin of natural laws, and logic it self prove this to us. There is no point in trying to go into mysticism like some Guenonists think as this does not even touch the fundament of every-thing. All of philosophizing, natural, moral, religious, is a forlorn activity. So, what are we supposed to do? Quit. Just live your life. All meaning is hidden from us, only delusions are possible. We delude ourselves by interpretation. We always misinterpret sensory input, leading to delusions of knowing "the" patterns in natural phenomena. We delude ourselves into believing a set of facts like the position of the sun and moon has particular religious meaning. We delude ourselves into thinking the sounds of speech have a power of leading us to correct interpretation. You are Totally Estranged from Truth itself. Do not waste your time (if it is possible to waste) thinking you can uncover things beyond what is revealed to you through conjuring spells of interpretation. Give up. Walk away from the Perennialists and Platonists and prophets.
How do philosophers not starve to death? They're not doing a job, they aren't providing anything useful or worthwhile to the world...I don't get it? Why aren't "philosophers" worse off than your average, run-of-the-mill starving artist? Reality exists independently from your thoughts or experience btw.

>>24981979>"The limits of my language mean the limits of my world"This leaves considerable space - perhaps infinite - for expanding the imperium of one's mother tongue. Is contemporary philosophy worth getting into or are they (contemporary philosophers) too human to take seriously, in a way? Where do I start? I don't even mean popular philosophers, but the people in the literal trenches and maybe even younger than myself at this point.
>>24978765>the analytic/continental split has really badly fucked contemporary philosophyI'm sorry but this is entirely the fault of the Analytic philosophers. Continental philosophy has demonstrated itself to be incredibly welcoming to other fields, drawing heavily on psychoanalysis, literature, art, music, etc, and is more than willing to engage with anyone or anything of interest. The Analytics are some of the most incurious people in the world. When asked about reading Kant in a Q&A, Kane B shuddered and petulantly made known his lack of interest, following up with a story about how his most hated philosopher is Plato. When asked about reading any theory at all, Chomsky got upset and said he can't see the point.
>>24980433>I'm sorry but this is entirely the fault of the Analytic philosophers. Continental philosophy has demonstrated itself to be incredibly welcoming to other fields, drawing heavily on psychoanalysis, literature, art, music, etc,>psychoanalysis, literature, art, music, etc,You're so accomodating you don't even do real philosophy anymore.>The Analytics are some of the most incurious people in the world. When asked about reading Kant in a Q&A, Kane BLiterally who? You seem entirely out of touch with the history of analytic philosophy, as they've been talking about Kant for more than half a century now. Plenty of the EARLIEST proponents of Analytic Philosophy were neo-kantians of a sort, specifically Carnap and Frege. The biggest boom in "analytic philosophy" the past decade or two has been in readings of Hegel. See Brandom's A Spirit of Trust: A Reading of Hegel’s Phenomenology as an example, which he just published a few years back, but he's been lecturing on Hegel for well over a decade as he's been writing the book.
>>24980433>When asked about reading any theory at all, ChomskyChomsky certainly isn't an analytic philosopher. He's not a philospher at all in fact. It's telling you don't even talk about a single analytic thinker in your post. For all the complaints about "the analytics being incurious" you don't have the faintest clue of what you're talking about. How about you get your head out of your ass and read Wilfrid Sellars.
>>24978647"Contemporary philosophy" is just a black and white reel of some dumb roid monkey doing arm presses sitting down with some dogshit text about making money or being "alpha" over it in white letters while a sad, mysterious tuba toots in the background.Philosophy is dead.

I remember 2-3 years ago there was a journal essay on 4chan on the subject of South Korea being a social experiment subject of the US and the Western world. Do any of you guys recall the essay title. >>24978287South Korea was late to democratization which is the likeliest reason. Hegelian and Confucian influences are common. Master signifier is highly fluid, night of the world is default sceptic position. Elected assembly rejected martial law imposition quickly recently and the state boasts some of the highest suicide rates in the world. Consistent failure to bribe residents to procreate, not as intrusive as Taiwan. Political polarization is equitable or near equitable with western countries.
