Could the mods like force archive or autosage the old thread so that the /bant/ schizo can't Necro it for the next 3 days like he's also going to do to the /bant/ thread?
He's already beginning to bump the bad thread.
He's probably the one who sabotaged the OPs in the first place.

Does anyone else get constant warnings from their antivirus when visiting 4chang? I wonder why this happens. Also there is a conspiracy theory going around the boards right now, that they got rid of the unique poster counter in threads to hide the empty/dead internet and/or bots. Sounds crazy but who knows. Someone in this thread posted a link and it made me do a double-take, because it's very rare someone posts html links on this damn website, yet my antivirus goes nuts when I come here. Something to think about.
>>

Stop mass replying, I would still give you a reply if you didn't do it
>that they got rid of the unique poster counter in threads to hide the empty/dead internet and/or bots
I'm sure that this is what actually happened. They wanted to make artificial threads look natural. Now a thread can only have 5 different posters and 52 replies

Why did they add the IP counter?

this place is still active but most new users are just going to the already massive boards that are always going to be garbage heaps. i guess that makes it that much harder for new memes to spread unless they're obsessively spammed like -oomer/wojak shit, or they relate to something political for people to sperg out about. come to think of it i have a hard time recalling a new non-sociopolitical meme from this place since the early very 2010s.

I think you're generally right, though I also think /k/, /pol/ and reddit have been feeding off of each other for memes related to the Russo-Ukrainian War. But that's a niche field, the memes are only relevant or funny to folks deeply interested in that conflict, and could arguably fall under the sociopolitical category you highlighted already.

>>
>>78590081
a lot of 4chan memes are in-jokes and more specific to the board community where as the modern viral meme hinges on being a moldable fill-in-the-blank template for for you to share with (x) fandom
jokes like goku giving chichi bone cancer or screaming KANTOOOOO when you see the fat red lizard are harder to mass translate into other fandoms so they don't get as big
and depending on who you ask the fact that they stay as in-jokes is a good thing
>>
>other anon has no argument and accuses you and someone else of being a samefag
>meanwhile he's blatantly obviously been replying to his own posts (reply 1 minute after the original post, with the same distinctive bad grammar, on a topic nobody else in the thread gives a shit about)
The only more kino trope is when they resort to a semantic argument but get the semantics wrong anyways because they're an ESL. Seriously though, is it just me or are most false samefag accusations you get usually just projection? I guess that people who do it assume that if they are, everyone else must be too.

You're overrating him. He just copied what "they" taught him, and he was really bad at it. "They" (if they matter at all, probably not) should be glad he stopped, he was such an embarrassment and failure.

ima tricky one!
>>
>>78593689
no, what the fuck? that's not even close to how it works.
youtube got in trouble because it's fucking youtube. everyone on the internet needs youtube to exist for one reason or another, so everyone on the internet uses youtube where videos can stay up for as long as the creator wants and get recommended by the algorithm, which means copyright violations are far more serious in the eyes of license-holders. 4chan is a relatively obscure site that very very few people use to get copyrighted material, material which eventually gets auto-deleted before any relevant party can take action and regardless always complies with DMCA requests and/or law enforcement.

for a relatively small site like 4chan, which doesn't have any attention driven to it as a piracy site, simply saying "don't post it" and deleting the occasional movie rip is more than enough to stay out of legal trouble.

yes you are right that stuff gets deleted over time here unlike youtube videos which stay up forever (or until the video/channel gets deleted(or youtube itself goes down)) and that 4chan is much smaller than youtube but there's nothing that says that you can only go to court with billionares, the hosts of romsites of the past know that better than anyone.
but you are right that it probably won't. I'm just saying legally it could.

gamergate spread awareness that many journalists are corrupt activists, and it grew the anti sjw / woke movement. videos about it got hundreds of thousands of views and a lot of counter voices rose to prominence. its hard to tell how much impact it really had. it definitely affected culture war, but as isolated event its impact was definitely smaller than the european migrant and terror crisis that occurred at the same time, and not even 1/100th the impact of elon buying twitter

DMCAs happen all the time here as a result (/v/edditors remember this back when Last of Us 2 came out), but anything involving lawyers tend to be directed at the poster as 4chan has the funny little disclaimer that posters are the ones responsible for their posts. Example of that being the anons behind the aforementioned Fappening, a handful got prison time and the legal aftermath was the main reason Moot gave up on the site.

so as i said, low-iq e-celebs. videos getting hundreds of thousands of views means next to nothing in the broader political landscape, as is evidenced by the fact that most of those channels fizzled out after max 3 years (including many who pivoted out of "politics") and even the major figures like sargon completely flopped in the political world by mild media ribbing.
the internet influences irl politics, i won't say it doesn't, i'm just saying gamergate's influences are fairly negligible compared to even people like andrew tate or even a few political streamers on twitch who despite having stupid views aren't treated as toxic waste by relevant politicians like the anti-sjws were.

coinciding with AI shilling seeming to go down
it's been a big thing the past few days that a paper was put out showing LLM and other machine learning models haven't made any appreciable advancements in a year and a half, on top of there being extremely dubious use for AI and the technology inherently not being profitable
>>
>>78600538
i agree the ai bubble is popping but sadly what ai is really good at is writing fake comments.
i hope the detection for LLM keeps up with it
honestly i think 4chan should ban all LLM written material even if its uploaded by a user.
the biggest thing 4chan has is the comfortable feeling of a homogenous community. the feeling that real people real ideas are behind the posts.
the feeling when some anon shows something off to the camera and includes the thread in the background and your replys in featured.
ai directly threatens that
>>
>>78600642
>honestly i think 4chan should ban all LLM written material even if its uploaded by a user.
how do you propose they do this without banning half the site due to false positives
>>
>>78600283
i know the pic you're talking about and yeah it's the exact reason people stopped using sjw so much, "if you disagree with me you're an sjw, if you say you're not an sjw you're an sjw in disguise". it's one of those things where i feel like if you weren't called (or implied to be) an sjw multiple times back in the 2010s you probably didn't have any actual opinions on anything, same as if you haven't been called a retard or faggot.
>>
>>78600690
any blatantly ai that is lengthy in text that has a high possibility of being ai
right now i can just copy and paste chatgpt text and upload it but if i dont want it flagged as ai-generated i need to make a few tweaks. first i should make sure the text reads naturally and fits with my own style. adding some personal touches like stories or unique insights can help it feel less robotic. also checking for errors and matching the tone to whats expected on the platform will make it blend better. interacting with readers in the comments can also boost its authenticity.
>>
>>78600642
Your concerns about AI-generated content, particularly in spaces like 4chan, are valid and reflect a broader anxiety about the authenticity of online interactions. The rise of AI, especially language models, does indeed pose challenges in maintaining the integrity of online communities. When these spaces are valued for their human connection, the introduction of AI-generated content can feel like an intrusion, undermining the trust and authenticity that make these communities unique.
>>
>>78600732

I think that's more a sign of how fucking dumb and homogeneous /pol/ can be than it is an actually convincing AI. Outside the context of "blending in as an average /pol/ post" it's useless.
>>
>>78600732
totally get what youre saying the worry about ai generated stuff on places like 4chan is real and hits on a bigger issue about keeping online interactions genuien with ai becoming more common its tough to keep that human touch which is what makes these communities special when ai content starts mixing in it can feel like its messing with the vibe and trust that people value so much

This isn't actually possible without extremely highly coordinated spam threads and would attract mod attention very quickly regardless of board. /pol/ posters are the most concerned with being "slid" and not a one of them uses the term properly, "slide thread" invariably means "thread I don't like"

Not even close. Even if you don't count Minecraft (which you should, because Notch was a /v/tard who posted all the earliest updates there) you've got Katawa Shoujo, Pokemon Clover, Risk of Rain, and the /v/ Friday Night Funkin mod which were all pretty impactful on the wider internet. That would go a far way to explaining why reports on him seem to go ignored most days but I've seen him get banned before.
>>
>>78604229
I don't know how exactly the report queue works, but mods and jannies likely can't hide reports (such as to their own posts) from others easily, and they can get banned too. Certainly their posts aren't going to be undeletable.
>>
>>78604252
No ability for mods to get banned except by admin/site owner, jannies are treated the same as and can get banned like normal posters, to my knowledge. Though jannies can circumvent the appeals process entirely by yelling at mods on Discord. I think mods and janitors are capable of dismissing reports? But like you yourself mention it's also klaxon alarm obvious to any other mods that that's what they're doing.
>>
>>78604272
My theory is that every mod and janny can just see everything in the mod queue, but obviously reports need to disappear once someone has looked at it and judged whether to act on it or to dismiss it. I've also observed that single posts can basically get report shadow banned, meaning you can report a post that has been marked as unreportable as often as you want, but nobody will see the report.
>>
>>78604223
that feels like it would be an unnecessary burden to have just to be able to have a slightly easier time avoiding a ban, since other mods will obviously notice you spending more time shitposting than moderating. ban evasion on 4chan is way too easy to justify the headache of being a mod/janny

/co/, /an/
/ck/, /lit/, /3/, /diy/
/biz/, /fit/, /mlp/, /vip/
/b/, /bant/
/h/, /d/, /aco/
/trash/
(20 out of 73 boards: 27% of 4chan)
People report the website being non-responsive in places at around 10:30pm EST
Most of the earliest thread creations are from around 11:00pm EST, so the "purge" probably happened then
Every other board appears untouched
Most affected boards feature a thread with an apology from a mod, but no other posts have been made from any mods
/an/, /biz/, /fit/, /mlp/, /vip/, /b/, /pol/, /bant/, /h/, /d/, /aco/ and /trash/ currently have no such post despite being affected

My god, I really can imagine this is what they did. They're running on fumes with no paid devs, so it makes sense that some complex features are not really implemented as UI but require raw DB queries, which are easy to fuck up. And of course with no backups or checkpoints, even though it's a trivial thing to do with databases. Why do they think databases were invented?
>>
>>78606148
The only important mutable state of 4chan is the current post counter for each board. An entire board gets wiped? Maybe multiple boards? As you can see, it doesn't matter much, shit's back to normal within a day.

Yeah I mean if you just trust yourself to prune a mass set of threads (some spam post, say) then you'd go right ahead. But then what if you fuck up the syntax? Can't un-delete the threads, or just restore a backup, that's that.

The source code leaked 10+ years ago (itself as a result of some mistake where it just printed out the PHP script instead of the actual page). From people in the know it was a mess lol. There were cleaner, less hacky imageboards at the time (Wakaba for example) but I doubt 4chan could easily just swap over while preserving everything?

Databases have checkpoints, which would allow easy rollback. My SQL knowledge is too rusty to know whether it's a standard feature and whether MySQL (they probably still use that trash) implements it.

Oh /r9k/haplets, where's your resident mod to modsplain this grand blunder?
>>
>>78605225
I've always thought 4chan's style of invisible moderation did more harm than good and I remember reading a moot post where he agreed as well. It gives users the feeling that they can say/do anything at best and feel completely isolated and abandoned at worst. While I have a largely neutral feeling about mods/jannies (some boards are better than others on this issue), I am confident that all moderators/team members (save hiro and maybe not some jannies) are people that care deeply about the website and it's a passion project for them that they stick with through all the bullshit and legal insanity.
>>
>>78606443
Random or semi-random board purges would be really good for the huge boards like /v/ and /pol/.
>>
>>78606471
I thought moot defended and pushed this invisible moderation style?
Though that doesn't mean not to communicate with users at all, like the mods have done after moot fucked off.

>>
>>78606471
there's other imageboard software that handles moderation much better where users can actually audit the moderation logs https://github.com/bakape/shamichan
>>
>>78606450
Don't get why they can't just combine an old SQL backup with the newer posts. For all boards even, surely it wouldn't fuck up the post numbers or anything? Maybe some threads would be on the wrong page for a bit, however that works, but there have been weird glitches where there have been extra pages before. And it all works out in the end.
>>
All of the boards I hate didn't get wiped and I'm still pretty annoyed about it
>>
>>78606471
Do you think invisible moderation helps or hinders with antagonism between mods and the average users? I ask because, as a reformed furfag, I keep up with the doings on e621 and I've watched over the years as people seem to get increasingly bent with the mod staff their doing the typical internet mod powertripping bullshit. On e6, you know the mods, and you usually know what they're doing, so to my eyes you can form concrete opinions on them, for good or ill. The one upside to invisible moderation is it gives you plausible deniability. I can assume they're not cunts, and chastise people bitching about admin abuse for earning whatever they're complaining about because I don't feel any lingering personal animus against them.
>>
>>78606475
You're right this was his idea and he pushed it for a long time, but I am sure I remember seeing a post from him towards the end where he said something along the lines of it being a bad idea that did more harm than good. I could be remembering wrong, but we are absolutely way too far into this to change course.
>>

>>78606557
They should moderate more.
>>
>>78606535
I think invisible moderation is the major reason why users hate the mods or are unaware that they exist at all or actually do anything. I think more a more visible mod presence (more stickies, more blotter posts, regular news posts, occasional public bans, more visible mod posts, etc) would have made the website way better but we're 21 years into this so I don't think changing it is viable. It is what it is, for better or worse.
>>78606557
This guy spams about niggers and trannies on hobby boards guaranteed.
>>
>>78606245
>ask them why they removed the IP counter
Have you ever posted in a new thread that was a few rows down on the catalogue only to have it not bump? Then if another anon replies, it magically bumps. This occurs because the thread was posted from your IP and the site applies OP bump rules even if you're not the one who typed the post.
If you post here and fill out the captchas, the algorithm is pushing AI generated posts through your IP onto various boards. The chances of catching this is very low as it's unlikely that you will happen to find and reply to a benign thread on a board you might not even visit.
They only hid the IP count so you don't realize what's happening. Otherwise you'd see a 300+ post thread with an IP count of 20 as each bot plays the part of many different anons. Even if it's your first time posting, perhaps the thread already contains a post pushed through your IP.

I also suspect this is intended to frame high priority target anons for various crimes. There might be a post with a benign sounding story implying the anon was near some place that a real crime occurred. Or a post that implies they're in possession of illegal materials. Online posts are used as the basis for conviction all the time. At the very least, it can be very financially and socially costly to the target.

I myself post from behind 7 proxys, so I feel comfortable enough to shed light on this scheme.

But it's more than that. It's true that public bans and the occasional (or even frequent) mod message can help in some ways and hurt in many others, but the issue is more that they do these things out of the blue and we only ever see the aftermath. Why did they remove the IP count? We can only speculate. Why did they close /qa/? We can speculate with more certainty, but no official statement. What the fuck just happened here? "Mods being stupid lol, sorry!" is all we'll get and it's frustrating.

Like, why the fuck did they make a message on individual boards, instead of just using the news page that's gone basically unused for almost a decade at this point? That's what people mean by public moderation: making it clear why they're doing things before they're done, and/or clarifying things after. Near every piece of information we know about the site's moderation of the past decade is from IRC logs where mods are rude and dismissive, and that's wholly their fault and not the users. Sometimes it even takes a rogue janny leaking shit or a literal court order after a mass shooting to hear anything at all, what the fuck?

They don't want to say something stupid publicly that then gets tossed around to hell and back (e.g. "cultural phenomenon" re: smash) but staying silent has the possibility of doing just as much harm for a site like 4chan. Hiro knows English, even if he pretends like he's some clueless Japanese guy to trick people into thinking he doesn't understand the question, so there's no excuse for him not giving so much as a "we see you, we hear you <3" every now and then.

Yeah, either that or they have a tool to wipe an entire board, since they wipe /b/ every now and then. Since the stickies were not affected by the wipes, it makes sense that it was a mod tool rather than a database query.

i doubt its an IP range issue because then why are only certain boards hit and others not? an IP range mistake would turn 4chan into swiss cheese

IP range wipes are the one thing which can remove an arbitrary number of posts at once. It can't explain everything, but it should not be dismissed.

If you sort the entire list of board names alphabetically, and count the number of boards in the gaps between uninterrupted sequences of the boards that were deleted, there's this pattern:

1 1 3 3 6 3 20 13

From the start, I could notice that the boards that were deleted trend to the beginning of the alphabetical order. I was hoping to see a more regular pattern.

not4chan was a different site, associated with 4chan, I heard rumors about it not even run by moot.

Now what? Did not4chan die? Was the board not actually moved there?

This had foul play written all over it. One of his shoes was found by a river bank far from the scene, there was no official autopsy, the coroner who saw the body immediately quit after the case.
Wasn't forcefully shoved in since he didn't have any scratches or bruises on him, also was naked and had his clothing neatly folded and tucked into his chest, but it's not hard to imagine he was threatened into undressing and getting into the toilet.

The timeline's weird, not4chan.org was registered on November 5 2004 but in early 2005 4chan still linked to the boards on the main site
https://vyrd.bibanon.org/rx/736524.html
The earliest proof of not4chan in use I can find is this cap, from the post counts it's clear the boards weren't reset. (Post count on /l/ on 4chan on Oct 15 2004 was 46123) There's claims that it ran on the same server which makes sense if all they did was redirect the URLs and change the CSS. For a while you could probably access the same boards on either 4chan.org or not4chan.org. There's also a reference to not4chan in the leaked code from 2010.
not4chan was mostly run by moot's #raspberryheaven friend Saber, along with Censored_Vagina (CV was pretty involved with early 4chan) until July 26, 2006 when Saber either lost interest or was worried new legislation would outlaw loli.

I still need to do more research on it, but yes. It was used from sometime in 2004 to 2006, then apparently redirected back. There's also 4channel.net which I could find almost nothing about besides mods using it to host images for embeds. Moot mentioned spinning off 4channel again in 2009 [https://desuarchive.org/a/thread/18150749/#18152836]
4channel.org started being used in 2010 for /f/lashes exclusively probably until whenever 4cdn.org became the image server.
