Baseball was more like yuropoor sports with the minor leagues and teams could sign whoever they wanted and only implemented a draft because the yankees and cardnals kept signing everyone because they had more money. The first NFL draft was 1936, first NBA draft was 1947 and the first MLB amateur draft wasn't until 1965. The MLB had the famous bonus baby rule from 1947-1964 where if you signed an amateur to over a certain amount they had to be on the major league roster for 2 seasons before going to the minors. So you had guys like Kofax and Clemente on the mlb rosters before going to the minors. the thing was the MLB hasn't changed roster sizes in like literally forever so teams in the 50s only carried like 8 pitchers as opposed to 13 in 2025 and a lot of teams didn't platoon back then so teams just had extra roster spaces and it wasn't uncommon for a team to only carry 21 players. even when they unofficially changed the roster size from 25 to 24 in the mid 80s to mid 90s teams were only carrying like 10 or 11 pitchers so the missing roster spot was like a 3rd catcher which has since been deleted due to bigger bullpens anyway
